1 THE PROVERB Called by God through Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit to worship, grow and serve. A Great Big Thank You to All of You! I am very happy that I have successfully completed all of my exams and have been accepted into the PC(USA). But what was truly heartwarming was the kind and generous welcome I received from all of you. FEBRUARY 2018 Pastor s Message Session Notes Committee Chairpersons Financial Report Repair the Roof Fund Worship Committee Lectionary Readings Christian Education Deacons Corner Presbyterian Women Women of Faith Church Closings Bulletin Board Birthday List Book Club February Calendar On January 21, I knew there was going to be a celebration gathering after worship, but I was not expecting the strange movement of tables and the gifts laid upon them during the announcements. The Geneva Robe, which is often worn by Presbyterian ministers, is beautiful. I was planning on buying one over the next couple of month, but now I joyfully get to begin wearing it right away. A bit of history on those robes. They tie us to the times of John Calvin. It was common to wear your academic robes as a pastor as a sign to show you have been trained for the job. The stole (the cloth that goes around the neck) is excellent. I immediately noticed how well it hung, as well as how used mine have become. I really like the Presbyterian symbol which will be very appropriate on Reformation Sunday as well as other occasions. The cross is a delight as well. The Celtic style of the Presbyterian Cross finds its roots in Scotland. KETTLE MORAINE UNITED PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH N66 W32690 Highway K, Hartland, WI Telephone: Website: kmupcnews@gmail.com STAFF Becoming Presbyterian took a lot of prayerful thought. No matter how I looked at it, it was the direction I discerned God pointing me. Simply put, it was a closer fit to who I am both theologically as well as how it was structured to work. The fit in this congregation matched better than any other congregation I have served as well. I am very glad to be here. I look forward to our future journey together. We are living in a fast-paced ever-changing culture, which has brought confusion to many congregations as how to interact. I believe we have the gifts to continue to be God s people in this time and in this place. The Holy Spirit is still moving among us. I believe there will be a bright future for us together. Minister: Rev. Matthew Lee Secretary: Stephanie Flessert Handbell Director: Emily Guderyon Choir Director: Stephanie Flessert In Christ s mission, Custodian: Sue Weber Pastor Matt
2 Page 2 - The Proverb February 2018 SESSION NOTES: Kathy Lembke (Clerk of Session) / klembke@franzengraphics.com Session will next meet in Tuesday, February 20 at 6:30 p.m. What a wonderful celebration we had on January 21 st! I thank Stephanie and Mark Flessert for the delicious Chili, and the Worship Committee for hosting and providing the additional treats. Your Session had its first meeting for the year on January 16 th. We welcomed Stephanie and Wally to the team. Here are the business items we addressed at our meeting. Motion: Motion to create an ad-hoc committee for the purpose of facilitating a smooth transaction. The Treasurer Transition Committee is formed. Bob Flatt, Wally Friedl, Stephanie Flessert and Scott Meyer will work together to prepare a KMUPC manual outlining the procedures required for transparent reporting, and that will satisfy a budget review. Motion approved. Motion: Motion granting B & G authorization power for repairs up to $500 in a single month, as they see fit. Expenses in excess of $500 will be brought to Session for review and approval. Motion approved. Motion: Motion to elect Scott Myer, as he is willing, to continue as KUMPC Treasurer for Motion approved. As I had stated at our Congregation meeting, Scott will be retiring at the end of this year. We are asking members to consider serving as our Treasurer. Scott would show you the ropes, and the computer system we have in place to assist in the documentation. Please prayerfully consider stepping up into this role, we need you! Remember to reflect God s love in all you do, and to all you meet. Respectfully submitted, Kathy Lembke COMMITTEE CHAIRPERSONS / LEADERSHIP: CLERK OF SESSION: Kathy Lembke (Clerk of Session) / klembke@franzengraphics.com BUDGET & FINANCE: BUILDING & GROUNDS: CHRISTIAN EDUCATION: MISSIONS/EVANGELISM: WORSHIP: TREASURER: PERSONNEL & STEWARDSHIP COMMITTEES: NOMINATING: Robert Flatt (chair) / rsflatt@sbcglobal.net Wally Friedl (chair) / friedl909@yahoo.com Scott Meyer (chair) / smeyer374@gmail.com Phyllis Warden (chair) / flipwarden@hotmail.com Stephanie Flessert (chair) / slflessert@yahoo.com Scott Meyer (chair) / smeyer374@gmail.com responsibility of Session Kathy Lembke / klembke@franzengraphics.com
3 Page 3 - The Proverb February 2018 BUDGET & FINANCE COMMITTEE: Robert Flatt (chair) / rsflatt@sbcglobal.net Our December income increased by $5250 as generous donations to the building fund (Raise the Roof) were recorded this period. Year to date, with a $1,000 carry over from 2016, we have received and allocated $16,179 for the roof. This is commendable as we head into 2018 with a roof repair in the range of $25,000 estimated looming. Year-to-date the pledge forecast fell $4,732, 5.2% short of budget. Our December expenses were slightly under budget year-to-date and were in line with minor variances. While our overall net income is -$6759, when taking into account the Raise the Roof, designated fund, we are at a net income loss of $21,701 which is more in line with the net income loss of a negative net income budget forecast of -$25,826. Our 2018 budget pretty much parallels the 2017 budget. It will again be a challenge in 2018 as we are forecasting withdrawals from the Dayton Memorial Fund to meet the expenses of the Church. We see positive signs of growth and giving. One only needs to look at the response to the Raise the Roof giving for verification. Participation is growing in all our program areas. New ideas are being generated and put in place. There is a can do attitude and we now have the continuity of pastoral leadership. These are the signs of growth now prevalent at KMUPC. BUILDING & GROUNDS COMMITTEE: P Wally Friedl (chair) / friedl909@yahoo.com RAISE THE ROOF FUND UPDATE: $16,179 We will continue to have fundraisers and events until we reach our $20,000 goal.

This year, 22 youth from Southminster Presbyterian Church, Vernon Presbyterian & Christ the Servant Lutheran Church are looking forward to joining you for worship. We will be bringing you a musical with a message to take part in your worship service coming up soon. The musical is called Prodigal. The songs and scenes look at the idea of the Prodigal Son from a modern day teenage view point. The reassurance that God s love is there for us always even when we turn away or make bad choices is what all of us need to hear and remember! The show is filled with songs from the group Casting Crown, so hopefully you will recognize some of them. The purpose for the visit is to join together in fellowship and worship as well as to fundraise for our upcoming youth mission trip to St. Louis in July. Practices are on Wednesdays Handbells (4pm): Emily Guderyon (262) Choir (5pm): Stephanie Flessert (262) Guitar Group: (5 or 6pm) as needed
