1 VOLUME 46 ISSUE 11 NOVEMBER 2018 THE INFORMER NEWSLETTER OF UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Minister: Phyllis Coates / revpkc@bellsouth.net / Life is a Ball Game Life is a ball game Bein' played each day Life is a ball game Everybody can play Yes you know, Jesus standing at the home plate He is waiting for you there You know, the life is a ball game But you've got to play it fast The first phase is temptation You know the second phase is sin The third phase tribulation If you pass, you can make it in Old man Solomon is the umpire And Satan pitchin' a game He'll do his best, strike you out He playin' just the same You know, Daniel's up to bat first You know, he pray three times a day Yes Satan pitched him a fast ball But he hit it anyway Yes you know, Job is up to bat next Satan's struck him in every way But Job hit a home run And he came on in that day Yes you know, prayer is a strong bat To hit at Satan's ball And when you start to swing it You got to give it your all and all Yes you know, the priest gonna be your catcher And on him you can depend Oh Jesus standing at the home plate And He is waiting for you to come in Yes you know, Moses is on the sidelines Waiting to be called You know, the day he parted the Red Sea Little price all and all Then John came in the ninth inning And the game was almost done Then God gave John a vision And he knew we'd already won Yes you know life is a ball game Being played each day You know life is a ball game Each and everybody can play Yes you know, Jesus is standing at the home plate He is waiting for you there Well you know, life is a ball game But you've got to play it fair As I go through life, it sometimes reminds me of playing a game of baseball. It is a very simple but complex at the same time (oxymoron). It is a game that requires others to participate in and be able to communicate with members of the teams. In order to accomplish this feat one must know what the others on the team are thinking. Like church teams we all must be working toward a goal. The goal of worshipping our Lord and Savior as well and loving one another. In the ball game of life we all want to as a team get to home plate. In life s game, we all as Christians want to get to one day to our home to see King Jesus. Going home is our goal. Getting home in a safe way is the key. This poem and song to me shows how the game of life works. 2 Page 2 The Informer Volume 46 Issue 11 MISSIONS/OUTREACH The Mission Committee invites you to participate in these ongoing projects of the Church. HELP FOR HURRICANE FLORENCE VICTIMS Mission 100 offerings for the remaining weeks of 2018 will be directed to UMCOR for continued help to those in North Carolina. Many people are still not in their homes due to the flooding caused by Hurricane Florence. UMCOR is working to help with repairs. You are invited to be a part of the recovery efforts by donations to Mission 100. God s Helping Hands Food Pantry We have the opportunity to help those in need of food by bringing nonperishable food items and placing them in the large box in the Narthex. You may do this at any time, but we especially encourage you to bring food the first Sunday of each month. Thank you for helping others. Christmas in July Report We have 137 Shoe Box gifts that will begin their journey to a child this month. Collection week is the second week in November. These will be taken to the collection site at Westover Church to begin their trip to a child many miles away. Thank you for making a child happy with these simple gifts that show God's love. NURTURE Let s Go on a Trip! To: Wytheville, VA Where: Wohlfahrt House Dinner Theatre What: Christmas at Wohlfahrt Haus When: Wednesday, December 12, 2018 Time: Lunch-12 noon & Show 2pm Cost: $45 per person We will leave St. John s at 10 am on the church bus and stop at a rest area on the way. We will arrive in VA about 12 noon. We will leave after the show and should arrive back about 6:30 pm. The cost includes: lunch, show, tip, and gas for the bus. We will need 11 people to sign up for this trip. Payment will be due by November 4th. Sorry, no refund after November 12th because the money has to be turned in by November 15th. 3 The Informer Volume 46 Issue 11 Page 3 NURTURE Next Meeting Tuesday November 13 at 11:30 am Please join us in November for our next meeting. All are invited to attend. UMW Reading Together Book Club 2018 has been a great year for reading some interesting and informative books. Attendance has increased and books have been read each month as a group. Reading forms need to be turned in by November 15 th to Joy Ellison so reports can be given to the UMW President. Peace in Christ, Joy Ellison, UMW Resource Program Weekly Bible Study A weekly Bible Study is held each Thursday at 10 am in the Spillman Room. Everyone is welcome! The new study is called Watch Your Mouth. Come join us for a wonderful study each week. CROP Walk Thank You! Go Team Go! St. John s UMC Crop Walk Team: Pat Drewrey, Joy Ellison, Lloyd Eubanks, Abby, Jerry and Laurel Foster, finished the 5K walk on Sunday, October 14 th. It was a great day to participate in Ending Hunger. Our Soup Lunch brought in $1,020. Contributions can given in the Crop Walk jar in the entrance of the church or directly to Joy Ellison through the month of October. It is not too late to make a contribution. Thank you St. John s UMC Crop Walk team and congregation for continued love and support of the Greater Greensboro Crop Walk. May God continue to bless everyone who participated in this event. Thanks to Everyone! Thank you to all UMW members, who participated in the Bazaar last week. We also express our appreciation to the United Methodist Men and St. John's Youth for their help. This event is truly a group effort for our Church. We were able to raise over $2,300. This will help Out of the Garden Project provide food for students and their families and Habitat for Humanity to provide continued support for victims of the spring tornado in Greensboro. Again, thanks to all who helped in any way. New Pictorial Directory EXCITING NEWS! Our church has decided it's time for a new pictorial church directory. Our dates for photography will be Friday, November 23 from 2:00 pm until 8:30 pm and Saturday, November 24 from 10:30 am until 4:00 pm. Photographs will be taken in the Fellowship Hall. We chose this weekend hoping that college students would be home for Thanksgiving and also some families might want to have a family photos made. We will be in the Narthex for the next few Sunday s (before and after worship) to schedule your appointment. More details will follow in the coming weeks. 5 The Informer Volume 46 Issue 11 Page 5 UMW NEWS Congratulations to Becky Edmondson (a UM Woman who has worked behind the scenes in her circle) and to Phyllis Dudley (a UM Woman who joined more recently and went to work teaching and leading). They both received a Special Recognition Pin. Thanks for all you do. Bazaar! That s what it was! Did you see all the hard-working people! It was a great day that was enjoyed by all ages. Thank you to all who worked, spent their money, and joined together to make this a great day. We made $2,300 with more to come. This will benefit Out of the Garden to feed children and their families and Habitat for Humanity to help Greensboro tornado victims. Thanks to all! Circles will meet as usual in Nov. Please plan for exam treats for college students. Circle #2 has Ashlyn Humble and circle #3 has Faith Harper. It would be nice to give these treats at Thanksgiving when they are home. As you plan your Christmas projects and parties, let me know what you plan to do. Remember your shut-ins during the holidays too. The UM Men s meetings for Nov. and Dec. will be their holiday party so no circle has the duty to serve. Officers training is Nov.4 at Memorial UMC, High Point, from 3:00pm 5:00pm. Officers should plan to attend. Our November meeting is the dinner for Teen Challenge Monday, November 12, 6:30. This is headed by Pat Drewery. Please bring lots of good food (extra meat, please circles) and gifts for the men. This is the beginning of our holiday celebrations. As we plan for the holidays, we remember what a wonderful season this is. Gathering for fun and sharing make the holidays meaningful and inspires us to be like Jesus. Enjoy!
