9 Offering Mark 12: And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the offering box. 11 The Lord Will Provide Though troubles assail and dangers affright, Though friends should all fail and foes all unite; Yet one thing secures us, whatever betide, The scripture assures us, the Lord will provide The birds without barn or storehouse are fed, From them let us learn to trust for our bread: His saints, what is fitting, shall ne er be denied, So long as it s written, the Lord will provide. 12 The Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; He ascended into heaven, He is seated at the right hand of the Father, and He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body,and the life everlasting. Amen. 12

13 Preparation for the Lord s Supper I. The Lord s Supper is an ordinance of Christ. Our Lord Jesus Christ has commanded all who are saved by faith to remember him through the observation of the ordinance. (Matthew 26:26-29, Mark 14:22-25, Luke 22:14-23) The bread represents Christ s body that was crushed for our iniquity. The cup represents his blood that was poured out to wash away our transgressions. Our eating and drinking represent our faith in what he has done for us. Our celebrating this together represents that we are united under Christ. II. The Lord s Supper calls us all to self-examination. Paul s teaching in I Corinthians 11:17-34 gives us four questions we should ask before partaking in the Lord s Supper: First, do I believe Jesus Christ has died for my sins and is raised to give me new life? If you are not a Christian, you should let the bread and the cup pass. Use this time to meditate on the good news that Jesus has laid down his life for sinners so that they can be forgiven and reconciled to God. Second, have I been baptized and made my profession of faith public? Paul is addressing brothers which always indicates those who have professed faith publicly. Baptism is the believer s first public obedience to Christ. If you believe the gospel and have not been baptized, we encourage you to let the elements pass and prayerfully consider why you have not followed Christ in baptism. (Continued on next page) 13

14 Preparation for the Lord s Supper Third, have I committed to a body of believers that knows I am part of their regular fellowship? Paul addresses the church in the context of when you come together four times (vv. 18, 20, 33, 34). In vv , he calls them to wait for everyone who is expected before beginning, implying that the ordinance was to be celebrated by a group of believers who gathered together and had a commitment to one another. If you are not publicly committed to a gathering of believers, please let the elements pass. Prayerfully consider why you have not committed to and submitted yourself to a church so that other Christians expect you and look forward to your fellowship each Sunday. Fourth, have I sinned against someone in the body and need to seek forgiveness? Paul calls us to examine ourselves (28), discern the body (29), and judge ourselves (31). We must recognize that we are taking the Lord s Supper as a church united because of the grace we have received from Christ. Do not hesitate to seek forgiveness from a member during our time of prayer so you can celebrate the forgiveness we have in Christ together. During our time of reflection, please prayerfully consider these questions. Paul warns us not to take the Lord s Supper in an unworthy manner. If you are uncertain about these questions, please speak to an elder. III. The Lord s Supper reminds us of the hope we have in Jesus. The Lord s Supper reminds us that Christ died for the forgiveness of our sins. The Lord s Supper reminds us that we will share in the wedding supper of the Lamb when he returns.
