3 PARISH NEWS REMEMBER ALL THOSE WHO DIED - NOVEMBER 2 - ALL SOULS If someone close to your heart has died and you long for a ritual to remember them, please join us TO- DAY, Sunday, November 1 at 6 pm (the eve of All Souls) for a special prayer service. We ask you to RSVP to the parish office (ext. 10) and give us your name and the name of your departed loved one. In remembering we share our sorrow and increase our gratitude for those we love. Everyone is welcome - just come! Eternal rest grant to them O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon them. NOVEMBER BLOOD DRIVE HELP US REACH OUR GOAL OF 25 UNITS! Our drive is on Sunday, November 8 th from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm in Bovard Hall. To schedule an appointment, visit and enter group code G or contact Andrew James by or phone. There is a display table in Bovard Hall today where you can get information as well as sign up. Blood is a precious gift. Please consider donating. We are already over halfway to our goal. Help us to not only to meet it, but to exceed it. Today is Turkey Sunday. This year we will be helping Light of Life with their Thanksgiving Basket Ministry. The collection box is in the back of the church after all Masses for your donations. We thank you for your generosity in helping those in need. GOOD SHEPHERD SESSION BREAK Good Shepherd sessions will not be held on Saturday, October 31 st, Tuesday, November 2 nd, Wednesday, November 4 th and Thursday, November 5 th. Classes will resume beginning Saturday, November 7 th. SHARED PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING AND PRAISE The past two years we have participated in a prayer service the evening before Thanksgiving (Nov. 25 ) in conjunction with Ingomar United Methodist Church and Northmont Presbyterian Church. This year SJN will be hosting the service. The choirs of the three churches will join in leading the singing. As a reception is being planned after the service, we are looking for people to help us host the event - set up/ clean up, traying cookies, and being here to make sure all runs smoothly. If you are available that evening, and willing to help, please call the parish office at ext. 10. HALLOWEEN CANDY Save your Halloween candy and donate it to SJN for our annual candy bag project! All candy will be given to local shelters and agencies that participate in our annual Sharing Tree throughout the area. Candy can be placed in the candy bins located outside of the donation center beginning Nov. 1. Thanks for your help! RAFFLE TICKETS Please stop after Mass NEXT week-end (Nov. 7 & 8) & purchase raffle tickets for the Gift Baskets for the Wine Dinner. Take a chance - you might be a lucky winner! CHILDREN S CHOIR...begins its Advent practice TODAY, Nov. 1 for the Advent and Christmas season. Practice begins immediately after the 9:30 am Mass until noon. RCIA Looking a New Way Ever wonder why we worship as we do at SJN? Do you want to know more about our way of Catholic worship and some of the teachings/traditions of the church? If so, you are invited on Thursday, November 5 at 7 pm. Join our Inquiry group as we ask some serious questions and seek God s answers. It is an informal gathering of study and prayer. There is no commitment to the Inquiry process - so come and see. Soon the group will celebrate the Rite of Acceptance. So if you want to be part of this year s process, join us now. Call Fr. Al or Barb Stokes for more information. Hope to see you on Thursday. PARENTS OF COLLEGE STUDENTS! We would like to encourage our SJN youth who have gone off to college by sending them occasional notes from parishioners to let them know we are praying for them and care about them. If possible, we would also like to send them little packages of home made treats on St. Nick's Day and other special days. If you would like your college student to be on the receiving end of this new ministry of care, please contact Victoria Sheridan at vsheridan68@gmail.com and provide us with their name, year in school, birthday, and mailing address.
4 SPIRITUAL NOVEMBER - BOOK OF LIFE We begin this month with the Feast of All Saints - the celebration of all the holy people who have died and gone safely home to God. Their love of God was shining all through their days on earth and now they bask in God s light and love in the kingdom. Some of our friends and relatives may be counted in the number of saints! On Sunday, Nov. 2, the Commemoration of all the faithful departed, we remember all those who have died and might be in need of our prayers to fully enter the kingdom of heaven. It s a good day to tell the stories of our loved ones and be grateful for all the richness they brought to our family. It is a healthy beginning to our month long remembrance of the dead. To help us mark this special caring that unites Christians on both sides of death, we ask you to enroll the name of the deceased member of your family/friend in our BOOK OF LIFE located in the narthex. We will remember all of these special people in the prayer life of the parish this month. Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord, and let perpetual light shine on them. May they rest in peace. SCRIPTURE STUDY So much is happening once we turn the calendar to November. Don t get too busy for the Word of God. Join us for Scripture Study on Thursday morning from 9:45 to 11:15 am. Share the upcoming Sunday readings with a delightful group of adults. All are welcome. Coffee is on and the door is open. FROM THE STEWARDSHIP COMMITTEE This week, November 1, the quote from Pope Francis is: "The faith is not a gift just from me. Faith is given to be joyfully shared." WOMEN S SCRIPTURE STUDY Come on Wednesday, Nov. 4 at 7 pm for an interesting reflection on Martha & Mary of Bethany. Our next session will be in February, so we hope to see you this week. ON MISSION FOR THE CHURCH ALIVE! A great prayer by St. John Neumann reminds us: God has created me for some definite service. He has committed some work to me which he has not committed to another. I have my mission. That means that you have a contribution to make to the work of Christ in our world. And our first job in On Mission for The Church Alive! is to renew the Church so that it inspires people to follow Jesus. Think about what your first step could be to accomplish that mission. Then do it. To read more, check out On Mission for The Church Alive! on page 5 of this w e e k s P i t t s b u r g h C a t h o l i c a n d v i s i t GOD S WORD TODAY A day to commemorate all saints, those known and unknown, has been celebrated at various times of the Church year since the fourth century. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III dedicated a chapel in St. Peter s Basilica to all the saints. The day of this dedication was November 1. We have commemorated all saints on this day ever since. Listen to today s Beatitudes, looking carefully at your own life. How do you measure up to the ideals put forth by our Lord? As we open our hearts to the word of God, let us remember the saints who have gone before us and pray that one day we may embody the Beatitudes and come to be counted among those who enjoy God s presence in heaven. SACRAMENTAL CONFIRMATION CANDIDATES (and parent or sponsor) Don t forget - we still need some paperwork and we need you to come to an EVENING OF REFLECTION AND RECONCILIA- TION ON SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 8 FROM 6:45-8:30 PM. Please note that the opportunity to celebrate Reconciliation is part of this evening along with time for adoration and reflection - and some music too! BAPTISMS - October 2015 We welcome into our community of faith Parker Andrew Beatty, son of Quentin & Amanda (Thompson) Beatty Carson James Fischer, son of Brad Fischer & Genevieve Bordogna Luca Joseph DeIullis, son of Joseph DeIullis & Heather Province August Henry Mashuda, son of Thomas & Quinn (Axelberd) Mashuda Vanessa Jane Pratti, daughter of David & Laura (Fatta) Pratti Riley Alexis Shoemaker, daughter of Grant & Laura (Derunk) Shoemaker Samuel John Turo, son of Daniel & Erin (Vey) Turo Benjamin Joseph Wolfe, son of Mike & Randi (Stebler) Wolfe
