3 PARISH NEWS LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR Next week the Little Sisters of the Poor with be with us at all the Masses to seek your financial support for their ministry to the elderly poor. Your generosity helps them to continue to provide for the needs of the elderly in their care at their home on Benton Ave. in Pittsburgh. BEYOND RENEW SIGN-UPS THIS WEEKEND! Take advantage of this opportunity to sign-up for the fall season after all Masses in Bovard Hall this week-end. Continuing our celebration of The Year of Faith, the theme for this fall session is Facets of Faith. We are also dedicating this Beyond Renew season to Pope Francis and getting to know and understand him better. Please consider joining a small faith sharing group! Participation in a group is a wonderful way to grow your faith and meet other people from our parish community. LAST CALL FOR BABY BOTTLES The Respect Life Committee asks that parishioners please return any remaining baby bottles to the designated box outside the inner entrance to the church. The baby bottles were part of the fundraising effort for the Women s Choice Network and they would like to use the bottles in other parishes. Thank you for your donations and your help. JOIN US FOR THE 2013 PERU MISSION DINNER Celebrate with us the 48th annual Peru Mission Dinner, Thursday, October 17 at the Sheraton Station Square Hotel. A reception and student presentations begin at 6 PM, dinner at 7 PM. This is the major fundraising event for the bridge of love, hope and faith between the people of Pittsburgh and the people of Chimbote. All proceeds help sustain a maternity hospital, clinic and orphanage in Chimbote. If you are able to make a donation, we will cover the cost of your dinner. BLESSING OF PETS We are fortunate during this beautiful autumn season to celebrate the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi on Oct. 4th. St. Francis had a great love for the Lord and a deep reverence for all that God created - life in people, nature and animals. As a small way of remembering his life and legacy, we offer a BLESSING OF PETS ON FRIDAY, OCT. 4 at 6 PM in the front parking lot of SJN. Please bring your pet (in a cage or on a leash) for this short blessing. St. Francis called the earth and all creatures to praise and thank God the creator for the gift of life. MASS REQUESTS If you have requested a Mass for a particular Sunday, and would like to carry the Eucharistic gifts to the Altar, please contact an usher before Mass. SCRIPTURE STUDY Seasons change but God s Word is forever. Every Thursday morning an adult group gathers to break open the Word through reading and reflection. The coming Sunday scriptures are shared and prayed from 9:45 to 11:30am. You are always welcome to join. The door is open and the coffee is on! Just come. YEAR OF FAITH, CONCEPT OF THE LOGO This logo is composed of a square, bordered field on which a boat, symbolizing the Church, is represented as sailing on a graphically minimal representation of waves. The main mast of the boat is a cross from which sails are displayed in the form of dynamic signs which compose the trigram of Christ (HIS). The background to the sails is a sun which, associated with the trigram, refers also to the Eucharist. SOCIAL WINE AND CHEESE SOCIAL All women of the parish are invited to join us on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 7:00 p.m. in Bovard Hall. The Women s Guild will be hosting a Wine and Cheese Social. VERLAND ICE-CREAM SOCIAL Our Verland Outreach Ministry will be participating in an ice-cream social at the MT. NEBO campus on Saturday, September 28th from 1 TO 4 PM. 5 OUTREACH VINCENTIAN VOLUNTEERS Please join us on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 2:00 p.m. at Vincentian Assisted Living on Perrymont Rd. The Women s Guild is hosting our monthly bingo for the residents. Our monthly visits are short and sweet and are very much appreciated by everyone there. For more info call PLEASANT VALLEY MENS SHELTER We would like to thank all of you who have been donating clothes, sheets, towels and toiletries over the past several months! The shelter has been extremely appreciative and very pleased with the generous donations from St John Neumann. All we ask is that clothing, towels and bedding are in GOOD condition and CLEAN. We do sort through all of the items donated before delivering. Toiletries (especially deodorants), new socks and large or XL belts are needed. All items can be placed in the Pleasant Valley Men Shelter bins in the donation center Under the stairs. Our next dinner for the shelter is Friday, October 4th. If you would be willing to provide a side dish, dessert, salad or fruit beverage, please contact Phyllis Huber (412) or Cathy Gillis (412) Items for the dinner can be left in Bovard Hall before 3PM on that Friday. SUPPORT GROUP A seven session support group, beginning Oct. 3, for all who are grieving the loss of a loved one will be held at Catholic Hospice in Wexford. There is no charge.
