3 PARISH NEWS ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY SATURDAY, AUGUST 15 NOT A DAY OF OBLIGATION THIS YEAR It remains a Holy Day in which we remember Mary s death and her bodily assumption into heaven. MASS AT 7 PM ON FRIDAY, AUGUST 14 (There will be no 9 am Mass on Friday) ON MISSION FOR THE CHURCH ALIVE! Our summer Evenings of Prayer culminate in a Festival of Praise with sacred music. This inspirational event will be held next Wednesday, August 12, at 7 pm at St. Paul Cathedral, 108 N. Dithridge St., (Oakland). Join us for adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, traditional and contemporary praise music and an extended address by Bishop David Zubik, who will challenge us to Go forth and grow The Church Alive! No reservations necessary. More info : OnMissionChurchAlive.org. SUMMER BLOOD DRIVE Clear your schedule for Sunday, August 23 rd. Central Blood Bank will be here at SJN from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm for our summer donor drive. Please make an appointment to donate with Andrew James here at church or go on-line to and enter group code G Our parish goal is 21 units. A reservation table will be set up in Bovard Hall for this weekend and August 16 as well. Donors are desperately needed. Please give the gift of life. NORTH HILLS COMMUNITY OUTREACH SUMMER FOOD DRIVE See the insert in today s bulletin for details. Drop off items in Bovard Hall by August 16. THE BEGINNING OF EVERYTHING Everyone recognizes the truth of good proverbs, and so they endure from generation to generation. The Russians have a surprisingly bold one that fits this Sunday s Gospel: Bread is the beginning of everything. Judging from the first reading, Elijah might have felt that it was too late for bread - too late for life itself. This great prophet was at the end of his rope and endurance. Then, not one, but two angels visit him. One offers food and drink. The other gives startling directions. For Elijah, this food from the angels is bread for his journey. On the strength of the heaven sent gift of food, he walks to the mountain of God. In today s Gospel, Jesus offers himself, not just as bread for the journey, but as bread for life itself. He gives his flesh as life for the world. I am the bread of life (John 6:48). He is the beginning of everything. Copyright J. S. Paluch HOSPITALITY SUNDAY Next Sunday (August 16) is Hospitality Sunday. Please join us in Bovard Hall after the Masses on Sunday morning to enjoy coffee, juice, donuts and friends. Connect with old friends and make new ones. If you d like to help with this ministry, please stop in the kitchen after one of the Masses. We look forward to seeing you! TAKE A LOOK If you happen to be with us at SJN and want to take a serious look at the ways and workings of the Catholic Church, then we would love to meet you. Come and take a look at more of this Church and the ways of the Lord on Thursday, August 20 at 7 pm. Bring a friend. We ll provide some refreshments and a start to the conversation of who we are as Catholic Christians. No obligation - just come and take a look! Call Barb Stokes (ext. 13) or Fr. Al if you need more information. NO FALL GARAGE SALE The Appalachia Workcampers will NOT be having a fall garage sale this year. We will be having a 2 day sale in the spring (March 11/12). We have no storage space for garage sale items so if you cannot hold them until spring, please donate to another worthy cause. Do not leave those items in the Donation Center. We thank you for your continued support! AUTOMATIC WITHDRAWAL Some parishioners have been concerned that automatic withdrawal of church contributions would negate their ability to designate where their donations should go. This is not true; you can still designate how much to give for each withdrawal and where it should go. The 5 th of the month is for Operating Expense The 15 th of the month is for Church Alive The 25 th of the month is for Parish Share We do not accept credit cards at this time. Parishioners can set the amount for each withdrawal. Please call the parish office (ext. 10) for a short form that needs completed. GOLDEN WEDDING CELEBRATION The Diocese of Pittsburgh is again planning its annual Golden Wedding Celebration for couples who are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in This year s event will begin with Mass at St. Paul Cathedral on Sunday, October 11 at 2:30 pm. Bishop Zubik will be the main celebrant. A reception will follow in the lower hall at the Cathedral. Cathedral and hall are both handicapped accessible. If you are one of the couples celebrating your 50th anniversary any time in 2015 and would like to receive an invitation to this event, please call the parish office (ext. 10) or drop a note in the collection basket no later than August 10.

4 GOOD SHEPHERD PLEASE WELCOME OUR NEWEST DIRECTOR OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION The parish welcomes Kelly Reed, our new Director of Religious Education for Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. Kelly is assuming the full-time position while Barbara Matera is staying on part-time until next summer to help make a smooth transition for our families & catechists. Kelly is an SJN parishioner who has served as DRE at St. Alexis and St. Wendelin and has taught religion at Vincentian Academy. Her training in Catechesis of the Good Shepherd goes back to its beginnings at SJN when she was a Level I catechist and her three-year-old daughter was in the program. Kelly is excited to be here and is looking forward to getting to know our wonderful families and catechists. PRESCHOOL RELIGIOUS ED OFFERED Did you know that children have a unique relationship with God, especially before age six? At SJN, we invite children from ages 3-6 to weekly sessions in a space that is specially prepared for them. Through Montessori hands-on materials they experience the richness of our Scriptures and liturgical celebrations. Through those same materials, the children hear the voice of the Good Shepherd calling them into a closer relationship, which brings them serenity and great joy. To learn more or to register, call Barbara Matera at Ext. 18. RELIGIOUS ED PLACMENTS TO BE SENT Thank you to all families who have registered their children for Religious Education. We will notify you of your child s placement by e- mail no later than Monday, August 17. If you have registered and do not receive an e- mail by that date, please contact the Religious Ed office at Ext. 12. If you have not yet registered, please do so as soon as possible. Some Good Shepherd sessions are closed, so it is important to specify three different times. Please note that the Tuesday 4:30 6 sessions are closed for Levels I and II. GOOD SHEPHERD MATERIAL WORKSHOPS Every summer we spruce up the materials in our atriums and make new ones. If you would like to help we have a variety of work that needs to be done. Anyone willing to lend a hand is invited to a Materials Workshop. They will be held on Wednesday, August 12 at 7 pm, and Thursday, August 13 at 7 pm. The work is sometimes fun, sometimes meditative, but always enriching to us. If you can join us call Barbara Matera at Ext. 18. GOOD SHEPHERD CATECHISTS NEEDED Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is our parish religious education for children from Preschool through Grade Six. This program, based on Montessori educational methods, has grown to where nearly 350 children in 31 sessions attend weekly. Each year, catechists move out of the parish or just move on, leaving us in need of newly trained catechists. Perhaps the Lord is calling you to this rewarding and spiritually nourishing ministry. All Good Shepherd catechists are carefully prepared through a retreat-like formation course that covers both the content and methods to be used with the children. Barbara Matera, nationally certified formation leader, and Barbara Stokes are offering a rare Saturday course beginning in October. It will meet no more than twice a month from 11:30 am 5:30 pm and will certify participants to be a Level I catechist with 3-6 year old children. Please pick up a brochure in the parish lobby or call Barbara Matera at Ext. 18 for more information or to register. SACRAMENTAL CONFIRMATION DATE BISHOP ZUBIK WILL BE HERE TO CELEBRATE WITH US ON SATURDAY, DECEMBER 5 AT 11 AM. CONFIRMATION SERVICE PROJECT If you haven t signed up for the Confirmation service project, please do so ASAP! We only have openings for Saturday, August 29. Please call the Rel. Ed. office at ext. 12. Don t forget - the Confirmation Retreat for candidates is on Sunday, August 30 at Marina Spirituality Center. Mass is included in the day (10 am-4 pm) RCIC - FOR CHILDREN! Any child over the age of 7 who has not been baptized is always welcome to come to know the Lord through RCIC (Rite of Christian Initiation for Children). This process is adapted from RCIA. Anyone interested is invited to call Fr. Al or Barb Stokes for more info. SOCIAL SOLOS LUNCHEON - TUES. AUG 18 AT 1 PM Max & Erma s, Cranberry. First traffic light after I- 79 left exit. 5 YOUTH MINISTRY THINK FALL? All of our summer trips are complete, and they were great! Now it s time to think Fall. Adult leaders, called Core Members are essential to handing out the love of God, and faith we have received to the young people of our parish. Core Teams are comprised of adults who help plan and implement either Ignite middle school sessions or Encounter high school youth group. They attend planning meetings and help with: prayer, skits, small groups and relational ministry. Core members make middle school and high school ministry possible. If you think the Lord might be prompting you to serve, please contact Julie (julie@sjnyouth.org) to discuss it. You are welcome to inquire without any pressure to make a commitment. SAVE THE DATE One of the biggest, best, funniest life changing-est events of the year: The Fall Retreat. Teens grades 9-12 are invited no URGED to join with over 350 teens from around the diocese for inspiring talks, great new music, cool prayer experiences, and time to hang out with your friends. Save the date Nov 20-22! SPIRITUAL PROTECTING GOD S CHILDREN All church volunteers (age 18 and over) must participate in this child sex abuse awareness seminar. The workshop is being offered at the following local churches: St. Richard Thurs, Aug 6 6:30 pm St. Alphonsus Sat, Aug 15 10:30 am Our Lady of Sacred Heart Mon, Aug 17 6:30 pm ST JOHN NEUMANN Thurs, Aug 27 7:00 pm St. Malachy, Coraopolis Wed, Sept 01 6:30 pm St. Ferdinand Thurs, Sep 17 9:00 am St. Ferdinand Thurs, Sep 17 6:00 pm Contact Jeanette Pappert, SJN s Safe Environment Coordinator ( x15), to complete all volunteer clearances mandated by the Catholic Church. TEACHING THE PARABLES OF JESUS Did you ever wonder why Jesus spoke to crowds in parables instead of teaching directly? Parables are openended, leaving us with work to do to try to learn their meaning in our lives. We will ponder many of those parables as we meet on three Saturdays for Teaching the Parables of Jesus, a Diocesan Course at St. Mary of the Mount in Mount Washington. Celine Mitchell and Barbara Matera will co-teach this course that meets on September 12 and 19, and October 3. To register contact Barbara Matera at Ext. 18. FROM THE STEWARDSHIP COMMITTEE This week, August 9, the quote from Pope Francis is: "Christian witness is concrete; words without action are empty. SCRIPTURE STUDY Do you have some time this summer to reflect on God s word through Scripture Study? Join us each Thursday morning from 9:45 to 11:15 or so. This adult group is informal as we read, discuss and pray the scriptures for the next Sunday s liturgy. No previous Bible study needed. Just come and share God s wondrous Word! MONDAY SCHOOL Our first day will be August 31 from 7-8:30 pm. The speaker will be a surprise! The theme this year is Lighten Up - Try Mercy! We are looking for stories and Spirit that help us on the journey. We all need nourishment, stories, laughter, music and prayer on our life journey. Let s bring them all together and LIGHTEN UP at Monday School. Register thru Barb Stokes and Rel. Ed. office (ext. 12). For people of good faith, the fee is waived. Follow the scriptures and the words of Pope Frances: You can - you must - try to seek God in every human life. Seek with us!
