1 St. John Neumann Parish March 25, 2012 Fifth Sunday of Lent Easter is a time when we are Re-Membered: we welcome those who will become one with us in the faith. On Sunday, March 4, 2012, we sent all those who will be accepted into the Church this Easter at St. John Neumann to be acknowledged by the Bishop and the whole Church of Pittsburgh. They are now part of the Elect, and these days of Lent are a time for us to pray with them and for them. It is a great blessing to receive new members into the Church and we are grateful. To receive baptism is Kristina Policastro; Michael Rothrock, Kimberly Dawn Goodman and Corey Lowry will be accepted into full Communion with us and be Confirmed. Their children Samantha Rothrock, Catherine Grace Tolan, James Anthony Tolan will profess their faith and receive First Communon. Also Zairi Jannel Mercader will receive her First Communion as well.

3 Fifth Sunday of Lent PRAY & FAST FOR RELIGIOUS LIBERTY The Bishops of Pennsylvania request that all Catholics dedicate the regular Lenten Friday practice of prayer and abstinence as well as the additional practice of fasting on Friday, March 30, to the preservation of religious liberty. On that day, join with the over 3 million Catholics in Pennsylvania to mark this day of prayer, fasting and abstinence so that the Church may be free to practice what we teach. Remember that fasting is more than just cutting back on eating. Fasting is the practice of giving up something to which we are attached (TV, texting, movies, smoking, etc.) so that we can become more aware of God and our need of Him. What might that be in your life? Are you willing to give it up especially on March 30? WERE YOU THERE? On Good Friday, April 6, the youth of our Parish will be performing the Passion Play, WERE YOU THERE? This is appropriate for all ages and will be at 7 PM in the church. It is about one hour. Come and enter into Lent with this reflection of Jesus passion. RCIA The journey closer and closer to Easter sacraments finds us reflecting on more scripture each week as we prayed our Second Scrutiny last Sunday. The story from John 9 of the man born blind led us to ponder how much we need Jesus to heal the blindness in all of us. Our elect - Dawn Goodman, Corey Lowry, Kristi Policastro and Michael Rothrock will celebrate the Third Scrutiny in the SJN community this weekend and be presented with the Lord's Prayer as a sign that we pass on what we hold as treasures of our faith. Join them in prayer and encourage them. You are necessary to their journey too. We are blessed to walk in faith with them. RCIC Several young people- Grace Tolan, James Tolan, Samantha Rothrock and Zaire Mercader are also preparing for full initiation into the Catholic church this Easter. They too need prayer support from the SJN community. Hold them in your daily prayer. HEALTH AND WELLNESS Here's hoping everyone plans to attend our next seminar on March 29 at SJN at 7:00 PM. Presented by the experts from UPMC Passavant! Seminar Topic:" Diabetes and Nutrition." Please RSVP or just come and bring a friend or two. You must be educated as to what Diabetes is for your own Health and all those you care about. Please call : Fran Lehman at or frlehman@comcast.net for more info. Let us show the community that SJN parishioner's and friends are interested in staying healthy, by coming out and learning about what our Ministry has to offer. Looking forward to seeing you. 4 Page Four March 25, 2012 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Ask senior parishioners about this fifth Sunday, and they will share memories of this Sunday years ago, when it was known as Passion Sunday. In those days, the statues and crucifixes were draped in purple cloth, and a deeply somber atmosphere infused worship. The structure is different today for good reason. The stunning changes in the appearance of the church building drew attention away from the twofold work of Lent: reconciliation and preparing for initiation. Today, this Sunday is given to reflection on the necessity to commit, like Jesus, to the Father s will. Wherever elect are present today, the A reading reveals Jesus compassion in the face of human suffering, and his desire to call us from the tombs of sin, isolation, and even death itself. As Lent draws to a close over the next ten days, and before the beginning of the Easter Triduum on Holy Thursday, we enter an ideal time for celebrating the sacrament of reconciliation. Today s old title of Passion Sunday has migrated to next Sunday, also called Palm Sunday. In many places, people prepare their own bundles of branches for next week s liturgy: pussy willow, forsythia, dogwood. If your parish schedules a procession, you may want to prepare these branches at home and bring them along. BEAUTY AND THE FEAST Coming soon to SJN. It's part SPRING FAIR...Mother/daughter fun...gift shopping...helping good causes...new tastes and tea...and all things BEAUTY - FULL. Mark the date- SUNDAY, APRIL 22 from 2 to 4 PM. More details next week. PARENTS AND TOTS Due to the nice weather and the feast of Easter, we will NOT have Parents and Tots till further notice. It's been a great meeting place for young parents and their children so we hope to do it again soon. ATTIC ART Have you remodeled and now have wall art that you know you aren t going to use again?
