3 PARISH NEWS RENOVATING OUR CHURCH Thank you for your patience as our church gets a new & updated look! As of Tuesday s bulletin deadline, the carpeting is being installed in the chapel & the church. We expect the pews to be installed this coming week (July 19). We will keep you informed of any additional changes. Thank you to everyone who showed up last Sunday to remove the old pews. Many hands made the job go quick! EVENING OF RECOLLECTION This coming Wednesday, July 22 at 7 pm, Catholics from across our diocese will again join hands in prayer for On Mission for the Church Alive! All are invited to pray in an Evening of Recollection to be held at 12 parishes throughout the diocese. Thank you for your generosity! GOD S WORD TODAY Today s Gospel passage is one of the most moving in all of scripture. Even though most of us do not have experience as sheep farmers, we can nevertheless try to picture the metaphor used at the end of this Gospel reading. Jesus looks out on the crowd and is moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd. Apparently sheep are not the brightest of God s creatures and are in constant need of their shepherd. One might wonder what the attitude of Christ would be today if he gazed on this world of ours. Would he be moved to pity because we, too, are like sheep without a shepherd? Let us pray that God s word proclaimed this day will inspire us to cling to the Good Shepherd and listen to his teachings. From Saint Margaret Sunday Missal, copyright J. S. Paluch Company MISSION APPEAL Next week-end, July 25/26 please welcome Rev. Peter Mawanda, who will be speaking at all Masses for our annual Mission Appeal. Fr. Mawanda is currently residing at St. Mary of the Mount Parish in Pittsburgh. He will be representing the Diocese of Masaka, in particular the Bukalasa Seminary in Uganda. This high school seminary has a population of slightly over 500 seminarians. The specific needs targeted by this appeal are: Class text books Securing a reliable water system Alternative energy source Upgrading their computer laboratory Securing a seminary pick-up truck We request both prayer and financial support for this appeal. A second collection will be taken at all Masses next week-end. MASS REQUESTS If you have requested a Mass for a particular Sunday & would like to carry the Eucharistic gifts to the Altar, please contact an usher before Mass. MONDAY SCHOOL This is summer vacation for Monday School BUT please put it on your schedule for the next school year! Our first day will be August 31 from 7-8:30 pm. The speaker will be a surprise! The theme this year is Lighten Up and we re looking for stories and Spirit that help us on the journey. What do we need for this trip? Nourishment is essential so bring something to share and we ll provide some liquid spirits! Stories keep us on the journey. Bring yours to share - help us get to know each other. We need companions on this journey. Laughter makes us appreciate the joy around us and within us. It is our rhythm. Music establishes the pace for the journey - some fast times and some slow times to make the grade and last but not least... Prayer - conversation with our Savior especially through the Scriptures and the Psalms. Step by step we make our journey! Take all of this and LIGHTEN UP at Monday School on August 31 at 7 pm. 4 GOOD SHEPHERD PRE-SCHOOL SESSIONS BEGINNING THIS FALL Did you know St. John Neumann offers weekly Religious Education for children who will be three by September 1st? Level I Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is for 3-6 year old children, and uses Montessori hands-on materials to help the children come to know Jesus, the Good Shepherd. If you would like to visit one of our atriums or for more information, please call Barbara Matera at ext. 18. LEVEL I TRAINING THIS SUMMER IN STEUBENVILLE National Good Shepherd trainer Suzanne Lewis, who has offered adult formation courses at SJN in the past, will host Part One of a new Level I course in nearby Steubenville, Ohio. This course is preparation for working with 3-6 year old children in the Good Shepherd atrium. The dates are Thursday, July 23 through Friday, July 31. Part Two will be offered at a date to be announced. For more information or to register contact Barbara Matera at ext. 18. RELIGIOUS ED REGISTRATION Registration for all Religious Education was due on July 1st. We will still accept new forms, but please get them in as soon as possible. On the SJN website, go to Current Forms and click on On- Line Faith Enrichment Registration. There is no fee for high school students but we would like to know who they are! As usual, we ask for three choices for Good Shepherd. We place children in the order that forms are received. SACRAMENTAL CONFIRMATION SERVICE PROJECT If you haven t signed up for the Confirmation service project, please do so ASAP! We have openings for Saturday, August 1, Saturday, August 22, Sunday, August 23 or Saturday, August 29. Please call the Rel. Ed. office at ext. 12. RCIC - FOR CHILDREN! Any child over the age of 7 who has not been baptized is always welcome to come to know the Lord through RCIC (Rite of Christian Initiation for Children). This process is adapted from RCIA. Anyone interested is invited to call Fr. Al or Barb Stokes for more information. DIVORCED? REMARRIED? Planning to marry someone who is divorced? Do you have questions about freedom to marry in the Catholic Church? Would you like some help on how to validate your marriage and receive the sacrament of matrimony? Please call Fr. SOCIAL MEN S COOK-OUT All men of the parish are invited to our summer cook-out at the SJN Rectory on Thursday, August 6th. We begin at 6 pm and party until dark. SPIRITUAL HELP FOR YOUNG PEOPLE EXPERIENCING THE LOSS OF A FAMILY RELATIONSHIP Young People s Beginning Experience is coming to Pittsburgh. The loss of a parent through death or a changed parental relationship through divorce or separation is a traumatic experience. Young people, ages 13-18, may find help and support to work through their emotional experience with this weekend program. Pittsburgh is hosting the weekend from August 7 to August 9 at Gilmary. A trained & supervised team of youth and adults who have experienced this loss themselves will present the program. The aim of the weekend is to help sort out the feelings of loss and pain while strengthening self-esteem and self-acceptance. If you know someone who might be encouraged by this program, please pass on the invitation and if you are interested for someone, please call or dkelly5937@comcast.net for more information. SCRIPTURE STUDY Consider this summer to reflect on God s word through Scripture Study. Join us each Thursday morning from 9:45 to 11:15 or so. This adult group is informal as we read, discuss and pray the scriptures for the next Sunday s liturgy. No previous Bible study needed. Just come and share God s wondrous Word! FAMILY CHALLENGE Sometimes it is difficult to keep God at the center of family life. Maybe this resource packet can provide some great inspiring ideas? FAMILY PERSPECTIVE BY BUD OZAR In today s gospel the apostles gathered around and told Jesus all they had done. Listening allows the other person to express, understand and appreciate their experiences. Whether it is the excited chatter of young child or the repetitious stories of an aging grandparent, listening is important. It is not just time well spent, it is sacred time. Plans are afoot (pun intended) to form a Garden Club for God. Interested? Call Hazel Pruckner at In Her Own Words... Catholic Heart Workcamp for me was an experience of renewed awareness. Living in a place like Wexford can really distort your perception of how the rest of the country lives. Seeing the poverty that was the norm for many of the people we served was incredibly eye-opening for me. These people don't live on the other side of the world, they live just a few hours away. It made me so incredibly grateful to have been born and raised not having to worry constantly about money. God has blessed me in so many ways, and I now want more than anything to share my blessings with those in need. Catholic Heart Work Camp revitalized my focus on the service Christ has called me to do as his disciple, and I highly, HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who has ever wanted to strengthen their relationship with Him or has wanted to serve Him by serving the least of his children.
