3 PARISH NEWS TOOTSIE ROLL COLLECTION Next week-end, October 11 & 12, the Knights of Columbus will be here after all Masses for their annual Tootsie Roll collection for the benefit of St. Anthony s Regional School Program for exception children and the McGuire Memorial Home for handicapped children. Thank you in advance for your generosity for these special children. HOSPITALITY SUNDAY Next weekend is Hospitality Sunday. Please stop by Bovard Hall, after all Masses on Sunday morning, for coffee, juice and donuts. Meet new members of the parish and reunite with old friends. We can't wait to see you! THE WAY THE MOVIE The last screening of THE WAY (a dramatization of El Camino de Santiago) at St. John Neumann is this Monday evening, October 6 th from 7:30-9:00 pm. The film stars Martin Sheen and is directed by his son, Emilio Estevez. It is rated PG for some thematic elements smoking and drug use. PROTECTING GOD S CHILDREN All church volunteers (age 18 and over) must participate in this child sex abuse awareness seminar. The workshop is being offered at the following local churches. YOUTH MINISTRY HOAGIE SALE BENEFITS ENCOUNTER Proceeds from the October Hoagie Sale will benefit Encounter (high school youth ministry). We ll use the fund to help pay for the bus that will take us to the Fall Retreat held at Camp Allegheny in Ellwood City. We ll join with more than 300 of our friends from around the diocese for great music, inspiring speakers, moving prayer time, Mass, confession, Eucharistic Adoration, and so much more. See us after Mass next weekend to place your order for a delicious Mike & Dave s hoagie or pepperoni roll. Speaking of the Fall Retreat all teens grades 9-12 are invited to attend one of the coolest, biggest, funniest events of the year! The Fall Retreat is held November 21-23, Get away from the everyday and encounter the Lord in a new way. Registration is $110 (by Oct 26 th ). Contact Julie for all the details. Don t forget your bible. All 7 th & 8 th graders who attend Ignite are asked to bring their bibles with them each week. We start the session with a look at the upcoming Sunday s gospel. SACRAMENTAL CONFIRMATION Preparation for this sacrament continues with prayer, paperwork (should be in by now!) and participation in the Encounter experiences. Encounter meets TODAY, SUNDAY OCT. 5 from 12:30 till 2:30 in Bovard Hall. All Current 9th and 10th graders who registered for Confirmation prep last May are also registered for Encounter. So we hope you can be there TODAY! Lunch and fun and MEANINGFUL MESSAGES ARE PART OF THE AFTERNOON! Save November 9 for Confirmation practice. 1ST RECONCILIATION/1ST COMMUNION All completed and checked packets will be returned this week via the Good Shepherd classes. Please keep this work and use it for prayerful review as we journey toward these new sacrament experiences. BAPTISM PREP Blessings to any family that has welcomed or hopes to welcome new life soon - through birth of a child or adoption. We hope you expect to welcome this new gift of life into God s family too through the Sacrament of Baptism. To help you prepare for this God moment we offer a special Baptism session on October 19 following the 9:30 am Sunday Mass. Please call the religious ed. office (ext. 12) to register for this class. Our next session will be November 16 and there are no classes scheduled for December.

4 MARRIAGE PREP Weddings take a lot of planning but they only last a day. Help your marriage last a lifetime by setting time aside now for a marriage prep class. October 25, Saturday, is the next all day session we have scheduled at SJN. You do not have to belong to SJN to come to this marriage prep session. Please put it on your schedule and register for the class. Call the Religious Education office to register X12. Forms and info can be found online. They are attending Catholic high schools in the area. Lynn Guerra is looking for some adult volunteers to come one evening a week - flexible times and dates of your choice - to help these students with religion homework and questions. Interested? BASKET HELP FOR LIGHT OF LIFE Many of our teens have served at Light of Life Mission on the North Side. It has been a rewarding experience and we have been treated graciously. Now LOL is asking if we could put together a basket for their silent auction on October 21. Could we do it? We need donated items and volunteers. Will you - or your family - please pray with the 31 Club for priestly vocations? We still need pray-ers to take 1 day a month (for a year) to pray with our Diocesan 31 Club. The loss of a spouse through separation, divorce or death is a most traumatic experience. Many people who have suffered this loss feel left out by their church, uneasy around married friends, unsure of themselves, and uncertain about their future. The Beginning Experience weekend is intended to help widowed, divorced, separated people who would like to pass through the grief and begin to move forward with their lives. Come to a safe place. Travel from heartache to hope. The next weekend will be held October 24-26, at the Gilmary Center in Moon Twp, PA. Payment arrangements and possible financial assistance are available. Make a confidential call to Mary at or Steve at or SCRIPTURE STUDY It s a beautiful new season to spend some time with the Word of God in our Scripture Study. Get energized in the Lord on Thursday morning from 9:45 till 11:15 or so. You ll know the difference in your life. We study the coming Sunday readings and reflect on them together. The door is open for all! No previous Bible study is required. Just come and see! ST. PEREGRINE PRAYER FOR CANCER Every 4th Monday of the month at 7 pm, all are invited to St. Ferdinand Parish, Cranberry Twp. to pray for people with cancer, their families and their friends. We pray with St. Peregrine the patron saint of cancer. JESUS IN DISGUISE St. Alexis Church in Wexford supports a ministry to the homeless. They need blankets, sheets, towels and pillows, as well as backpacks and men s pants in sizes L and XL. Clean, used items are accepted. If you have anything to donate, please bring them to the back of their church. Thank you for your generosity.

5 SOCIAL VINCENTIAN VOLUNTEERS Please join us on Tuesday, Oct. 14th at 2:00 p.m. at the Vincentian Personal Care Home, 111 Perrymont Rd. The Women's Guild is hosting their monthly bingo for the residents there. Our visits may be short but are always very much appreciated. For more info, call Marlene at OVER 50 s CLUB The Over 50 s luncheon is on Oct. 20. The entertainment will be with Banjo Player Norman Azinger for some old-time music. VINCENTIAN Volunteers are needed for Saturday Bingo at Vincentian Home on October 18 th from 1:30 to 3:00 pm. We need you to help with providing prizes, setting up the game and assisting the players. GOOD SHEPHERD LEVEL II COURSE FOR CATECHISTS Beginning October 24 and continuing on Fridays from 9 am 3 pm, St. John Neumann Parish will host the wonderful and insightful Suzanne Lewis for a Good Shepherd Catechist Formation Course for working with 6-9 year old children. We invite all current Level I catechists to see how the relationship formed between the child and the Good Shepherd in Level I is nurtured in Level II. We also invite anyone who has ever participated in a Level I course, even if you are not a catechist. As always, taking a formation course in no way obligates you to be a catechist you may just want the adult education for yourself. Current Level I catechists can feel free to take the course knowing they do not need to move to Level II we always need good Level I catechists! Barbara Matera and Barbara Stokes will assist with this course. You can find a flier and registration form on the parish website under Current Forms. Call Ext. 18 for more information. GOOD SHEPHERD FAMILY MASS THANKS Thanks to the priests, musicians, servers, lectors, gift bearers and greeters who helped make our first Family Masses so special this past Wednesday. All Good Shepherd sessions will resume this week. Our next Family Mass will be on January 14. MISC. GIFT CARDS We have a variety of new gift cards ready to sell. Please consider buying Cinemark Theatres Single Admit tickets from us for $9.50. They will give us a 10% discount. These would make a great gift for the teenager who is hard to fit! The new cinema opened on September 19 th. The topic is the Little Nun Who Could, St. Teresa of Avila s simple Approach to prayer. Please take one home with you. OUTREACH PGH. FOOD BANK Volunteer with SJN at the Greater Pgh. Community Food Bank on Thursday, Oct. 23. We will be working in the repack area to sort food donations and fill boxes for distribution to food banks, shelters, soup kitchens, etc. throughout 11 counties. Meet at the church's back doors at 8:00 AM to carpool; return approx. 2:00 PM after lunch out together. Limit: 14 volunteers. Register at , ext. 12 with your name, phone #, address by noon, Monday, Oct. 20. The list fills quickly each month. NEW HABITAT COORDINATOR NEEDED For the past several years, Jay Deily has been coordinating this important parish outreach. Jay is retiring and we are looking for someone new to hear this endeavor.
