3 PARISH NEWS WELCOME If you are here today to celebrate Easter with us and have some issues that have kept you away from the church for awhile, we welcome you and are glad that you are here. Come back again and always feel free to call and find out more about our parish. You are important to us so keep in touch! OUR NEW MEMBERS What a glorious night for all of us! At the Easter Vigil we welcomed Justine Allaway, Jessica Baier, Mike Hatcher and Derek Hyatt. Derek and Justine were baptized into God s family, confirmed in the Spirit and welcomed at the table of the Lord. Mike and Jessica were received into full communion, confirmed in the Spirit and received the Eucharist for the first time. They have all traveled closely with the Lord this past Lent and embraced His life in a new way this Easter. Please encourage and support them in the Catholic community with your prayers and hospitality. We are blessed by their presence with us. They will continue to meet each Wednesday night in April during this Period of Mystagogy - a time to deepen the mystery. WHAT A NIGHT! The food was delicious and the company grand after the Easter Vigil last night. Thanks to all who baked or decorated or helped in any way to coordinate such a wonderful celebration of welcome and new life. Special thanks to Barb Stokes and her crew for all their hard work! APPALACHIA RAFFLE BASKETS The Appalachia Workcampers will be selling tickets for raffle baskets next weekend - April 11/12. Winners will be pulled at the Art Auction on April 18. ATTIC ART WANTED Have you remodeled and have art you no longer want? Donate it to the Appalachia Workcampers for our upcoming art auction. Your donation is tax deductible. Contact Laura Juran at or lejuran@verizon.net for more info. ART AUCTION - APRIL 18 All are invited to the annual Appalachia Art Auction on Sat. April 18 at 6:30 pm in Bovard Hall. The evening features hearty appetizers, beer and wine, and fine art for purchase. Tickets are $15. The majority of the art is $ and Spike will be the auctioneer. Tickets are available from your favorite workcamper, in the offices, after Masses on 4/11 and 4/12 or at the door. Come enjoy this fun evening and support this great cause. MONDAY SCHOOL FOR ADULTS Come again on April 13, 20 & 27 to hear Joan Schenker, M. Ed. to learn more about important times/topics with your kids and grandkids. Even if you aren t in the process of raising kids - they are important! Come discover more about them and how wonder-ful kids are! Session begin at 7 pm in Bovard Hall. Tell your neighbors, book club and relatives. Good info for all! See our insert for more info. SEEKING Easter Sunday is a day all about seeking. The early Christian communities gathered around the Apostles, seeking more about the life and ministry of the Lord Jesus. Saint Paul told the baptized Colossians to seek what is above. Mary of Magdala went to the tomb, seeking to find the Lord s body so that she could anoint it. We come to church on Easter Sunday seeking many things. For some of us, this is a once a year journey, when we seek connection with the foundations of the Christian faith. For others, this day is the culmination of a long journey of Lenten repentance. For the newly baptized, this is the first day of a new life filled with promise and expectation. Whatever it is that we seek, let us be inspired by the disciple whom Jesus loved who, when he saw the wrappings of cloth inside the empty tomb, saw and believed. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. GOOD SHEPHERD RESUMES THIS WEEK All sessions will meet to celebrate Easter in the atrium this week. We will continue weekly until the end of April, and then finish our year with Family Mass on Wednesday, May 6. MASS REQUESTS If you have requested a Mass for a particular Sunday and would like to carry the Eucharistic gifts to the Altar, please contact an usher before Mass. THANKS FROM THE HEART Our heartfelt thanks to all who decorated the church through this Holy Week. Many hands and much talent helped us change the environment and provide a powerful atmosphere for worship during this incredible journey with Jesus the Christ. We remember, we celebrate, we believe!

4 SECOND SUNDAY OF APRIL Because of Easter these activities will take place NEXT week-end. LIGHT OF LIFE COLLECTION BLESSING OF EXPECTANT PARENTS BLOOD PRESSURE SCREENING ANOINTING OF THE SICK Anyone in need of the power of the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is invited to come to the 9 AM Mass on Sat. April 11 This sacrament offers strength to us in body, mind or spirit. If you are in need of this sacrament immediately, please call ext. 10 to make arrangements. SACRAMENTAL Kicking off Confirmation Preparation All 8 th grade families are asked to attend a brief and prayerful meeting regarding details about important elements of Confirmation preparation on Monday, April 13 th 7:00-8:30pm. We ll coming together to pray and cover details regarding sponsors and Confirmation names. Confirmation Preparation sessions will take place from 6:30-8:30pm on Wednesdays in May (the 6 th, 13 th, 20 th, & 27 th ). Each session builds upon the last so please make every effort to attend each session from beginning to end. Each missed session will have to be made up promptly. We ll start each session with Mass at 6:30 pm and parents & siblings are welcome to join us. BAPTISM PREP If you have been blessed with new life in your family through birth or adoption, we are glad to have you share that life with us through Baptism. The diocese asks us to take this step with knowledge and prayer. A Baptism Preparation Session will be held on Sunday, April 19 from 10:30 till noon. Please call the Rel. Ed. office (ext.12) to register. ADULT CONFIRMATION Did you miss the sacrament of Confirmation when you were growing up? Maybe you decided you weren't ready when you were 14 or maybe you moved, etc. Is this the year to be filled with the Holy Spirit? Any baptized practicing Catholic adult is invited to prepare now and then celebrate the sacrament with the diocese at the cathedral on May 17. SPIRITUAL FROM THE STEWARDSHIP COMMITTEE This week, April 5, the quote from Pope Francis is: "Accept the risen Jesus into your life. Even if you have been far away, take a small step towards Him: he awaits you with open arms." INTRO TO SCRIPTURE Class will not meet on Tuesday, April 7. Let s take time to rest in the Easter Mystery. Class will resume on April 14, 21 & 28-7 pm each Tuesday night. SCRIPTURE STUDY Celebrate this glorious Easter Mystery with the Word of God. Consider coming to the Thursday morning adult group to reflect on the Sunday readings in an informal setting. We meet from 9:45 till 11:15 in Conference Room A. The coffee is on and the door is open for you. Just come. BUSY WOMEN S RETREAT Please join us at Kearns Spirituality Center at 6 pm on April 10 and continuing on April 11 at 9am and closing with a Mass at 4 pm. This retreat will embrace the inspired wisdom of Hildegard of Bingen, Doctor of the Church. The fee for commuters is $70 and includes 3 meals. Register by calling Peggy at , kearns@cdpsisters.org. WOMEN DISCIPLES OF JESUS: BEARING THE GOOD NEWS TO THE WORLD Sat. He will be talking about hair care and some lucky person will be going home with a new look. Refreshments will be served. Guests are most welcome. Also save the date for our Covered Dish Dinner on Thursday, May 28th at 6:30 p.m. in Bovard Hall. For more info call Marlene at MEN S BREAKFAST All men of the parish are invited to Mass and breakfast on Saturday, April 11 th. We participate in 9:00 am daily Mass then enjoy a breakfast prepared by many hands in Bovard Hall. We are even featuring some new menu items, so come and check us out. 5 LACE UP YOUR SNEAKERS The Single Women s Group will start walking on Monday, April 6, meeting at the boat house in North Park at 9:00 am "weather permitting". Weather permitting means no rain or snow! They plan on walking every Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. Anyone who wants to walk, single or otherwise, is welcome to join in. We will leave the boathouse promptly at 9:00 am and will walk to your fitness level. PARENTS AND TOTS Anyone with a young child (ages birth to 4 yrs) is invited to join our next informal gathering on Wednesday, April 15 from 10 am till? in the Youth Room. The coffee is ready and the conversation lively and the children enjoyable. Please call the Rel. Ed. office to let us know that you are coming. See you there! OVER 50 S CLUB Our next luncheon will be on April 20th. The entertainment will be the Handbells performed by Sue Garton which will start at Noon and lunch will be served at 1 pm. If you are UNABLE to attend, please call Joy Martz at by April 13. MISC. COMING, COMING, COMING - Book Drive! Anchorpoint Counseling Ministries needs lots of great used books, DVDs and cd s. No encyclopedias, Reader s Digest, VCR or cassette tapes are needed. Starting April 7th through the 25th, consider bringing your used books to SJN and Anchorpoint will collect them from us. Their annual book sale will be held in June at Northway Mall. The sale helps to subsidize professional mental health, counseling, and outreach programs for families in need. GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP A new grief support group in the North Hills is meeting on the 2nd & 4th Thursdays each month from 10-11:30 am at St. Paul s United Methodist Church, Ferguson Rd. Allison Park. This group is free. Who Do You Call When See a Friend in Need? CALL The Saint John Neumann Society Our members are a caring group of people who take the time to do those little things that make the lonely or burdened feel less so. Our acts of kindness include: providing meals helping with transportation to appointments, church grocery shopping companionship letter writing and many other services to ease the burden for our brothers or sisters who need a temporary helping hand. Also, thanks to all who bought hoagies to support parish activities. We appreciate your help! A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE BY BUD OZAR That first Easter morning was confusing. Jesus was missing and Mary Magdalene, Peter and John did not know what to do. In family life there are confusing moment when we don t know what to do. Like the apostles we are Easter people when we believe and trust in each other even when all seems lost. OUTREACH BABYSITTERS NEEDED Volunteers are needed to help with childcare for children infancy through 12 yrs. old for one or two hours each Monday night from 6-8 pm at Hearth. Hearth is a transitional program for homeless women and their children on Mt. Royal Blvd. in Glenshaw. Teens who wish to volunteer must be 14 or older. VINCENTIAN VOLUNTEERS Please join us at Vincentian Personal Care Home at 111 Perrymont Rd. on Tuesday, April 14, at 2:00 p.m. The Women s Guild is hosting their monthly bingo for the residents.
