3 PARISH NEWS KEEPING OUR COMMITMENTS In the musical Fiddler on the Roof, the husband, Tevye, whose marriage was arranged years and years before, wants to know if his wife really loves him. Was their marriage just an arrangement, a deal? Did his wife, after all these years, ever love him? Does she still? We need to know if our loving commitments stick. We need to be reminded and reaffirmed. In the first reading, Joshua, Moses successor, needed to know if the people would remain faithful to their covenant with the Lord. Joshua was going to lead them to a new life - a settled life. Would they be faithful? Jesus, who identified himself as the very life of his disciples life, needed to know: Will you also go away or will you stay? We do not often see Jesus this vulnerable. A new choir season is approaching, let s make joyful noise to worship God! Come and join an ensemble at St John Neumann - the adult choir will resume rehearsals Thursday, September 3 at 7pm, and will sing at the 9:30am Mass on September 6. We are always looking for new members! This fall we will be looking forward to joining two other choirs in our area for the Interfaith Thanksgiving Service, as well as preparing for a Christmas Concert (date TBA). The Resurrection Choir meets on as-needed basis, and provides music for funeral Masses. Instrumentalist? Speak with Jessica about providing a solo for the Mass, or joining/starting a small group. We have many talented parishioners, some I haven t even met yet! Be part of a woodwind or strings ensemble, or play guitar! Those who complete this course will be certified to teach Catholic Vision of Love for elementary through high school. This course will meet from 6:30 9:30 pm beginning October 4. To register or for information contact the Rel. Education office at Ext. 12. RADA CUTLERY Anyone interested in some unique knives, kitchen utensils and/or food mixes (soups and dips)? Take a look at the RADA catalog hanging in the lobby. It is a fundraiser but also a convenience for some. All money benefits SJN. GOOD SHEPHERD PARISHIONER ELECTED TO CGS NATIONAL BOARD Parishioner and Director of Religious Education Barbara Matera has been elected to the Board of Trustees for the National Association of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. The five-person Board meets monthly by phone or in person at the Association s headquarters in Scottsdale, Arizona to set a course for how best to serve its growing membership in the United States. SJN s program gained visibility nationally thanks to Fr. Al s encouragement of staff members to attend national conferences and educational sessions as well as the parish s support of the National Association through Pancake Breakfasts and personal donations. Congratulations Barbara!

4 GOOD SHEPHERD CATECHISTS NEEDED Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is our parish religious education for children from Preschool through Grade Six. This program, based on Montessori educational methods, has grown to where nearly 350 children in 31 sessions attend weekly. Each year, catechists move out of the parish or just move on, leaving us in need of newly trained catechists. Perhaps the Lord is calling you to this rewarding and spiritually nourishing ministry. All Good Shepherd catechists are carefully prepared through a retreat-like formation course that covers both the content and methods to be used with the children. Barbara Matera, nationally certified formation leader, and Barbara Stokes are offering a rare Saturday course beginning in October. It will meet no more than twice a month from 11:30 am 5:30 pm and will certify participants to be a Level I catechist with 3-6 year old children. Please pick up a brochure in the parish lobby or call Barbara Matera at Ext. 18 for more information or to register. PRESCHOOL RELIGIOUS ED OFFERED Did you know that children have a unique relationship with God, especially before age six? At SJN, we invite children from ages 3-6 to weekly sessions in a space that is specially prepared for them. Through Montessori hands-on materials they experience the richness of our Scriptures and liturgical celebrations. Through those same materials, the children hear the voice of the Good Shepherd calling them into a closer relationship, which brings them serenity and great joy. Mass is included in the day (10 am-4 pm) 1ST SACRAMENTS We are close to the beginning of school (as if you didn t know, right?) and we hope you have finished your sacrament prep work for 1st Communion and Reconciliation. Please return the entire packet to the Rel. Ed. Office when you complete it. September 13 at 1 pm is the meeting to review the packets and return them to you. BAPTISM PREP Welcoming new life into your family soon? Include the sacrament of baptism in your preparations of love. Register now for our Sept. 20 session of baptism prep. by calling the Rel. Ed. office. Session is from 10:30 till Noon on Sunday morning and gives you time for information and reflection. MONDAY SCHOOL FOR ADULTS Our first day will be August 31 from 7-8:30 pm. The speaker will be a surprise! The theme this year is Lighten Up - Try Mercy! We are looking for stories and Spirit that help us on the journey. We all need nourishment, stories, laughter, music and prayer on our life journey. Follow the scriptures and the words of Pope Francis: You can - you must - try to seek God in every human life. Seek with us! GOD S WORD TODAY Decisions. Life is filled with them. Decisions are presented in the first reading and Gospel proclaimed today. The Israelites are asked to choose whether or not they will continue to serve the Lord, the God of Israel. In voicing their choice to continue serving the Lord, they call to mind all the wonderful things that God had done for them. The disciples in today s Gospel reading are also faced with a choice. Many choose to turn away from Jesus because his invitation to eat his body and drink his blood is too hard a saying. Peter and the Twelve, when asked if they, too, would abandon Jesus respond, Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We, in a way, repeat these words every time we come to Mass, for in fact there is nowhere else we can go to be fed by the body and blood of the Lord and hear words that will bring us eternal life. 5 TEACHING THE PARABLES OF JESUS Did you ever wonder why Jesus spoke to crowds in parables instead of teaching directly? Parables are openended, leaving us with work to do to try to learn their meaning in our lives. We will ponder many of those parables as we meet on three Saturdays for Teaching the Parables of Jesus, a Diocesan Course at St. Mary of the Mount in Mount Washington. Celine Mitchell and Barbara Matera will co-teach this course that meets on September 12 and 19, and October 3. To register contact Barbara Matera at Ext. 18. PROTECTING GOD S CHILDREN All church volunteers (age 18 and over) must participate in this child sex abuse awareness seminar. The workshop is being offered at the following local churches. Al was assigned at SJN, the parish has supported the Chimbote Foundation through this annual dinner. This year s dinner will again be at the Sheraton Station Square Hotel. In the past, we have always bought several tables & we plan to continue the tradition again this year. The cost for an individual dinner is usually around $130. If you can donate at least a portion of this cost and are interested in attending, please call the parish office. The reception begins at 6 PM and dinner is at 7 PM. Following the dinner is a video program about the Foundation s work in Peru. If you have any questions, please don t hesitate to contact the Parish Office at Ext. 10. AUTOMATIC WITHDRAWAL Some parishioners have been concerned that automatic withdrawal of church contributions would negate their ability to designate where their donations should go. This is not true; you can still designate how much to give for each withdrawal. NO FALL GARAGE SALE The Appalachia Workcampers will NOT be having a fall garage sale this year. We will be having a 2 day sale in the spring (March 11/12). We have no storage space for garage sale items so if you cannot hold them until spring, please donate to another worthy cause. Do not leave those items in the Donation Center.
