3 PARISH NEWS EM & LECTOR TRAINING Mark your calendar! There is training for anyone interested in becoming a Eucharistic Minister on Nov. 20, and becoming a lector on Nov. 21. Both will begin at 7 pm. If you currently are an EM or lector, there will be refresher training those same evenings at 8 pm. RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS Help aging sisters, brothers and religious order priests. Each year the need to provide for our elderly members becomes more pressing and we are ever more grateful for these providential funds, writes a religious sister about the financial assistance received from the Retirement Fund for Religious. Your donation helps provide necessities such as prescription medication and nursing care. Please give to those who have given a lifetime. "Advent Expectations": Prophetic Scripture Study Prepare your hearts for Jesus' birth by exploring the prophecies made about him by Micah, Malachi, Zechariah and Jonah. Presenters Dawn Quinn, Barbara Matera and Deacon Rick Caruso provide three evenings of reflection on Wednesdays, December 4, 11, 18 at 7pm comparing these prophecies with the expectations of the Messiah by the Jewish community of Jesus' time, and helping participants understand their own expectations of our Savior. ADVENT IS COMING Especially during these last weeks of Ordinary Time, we anticipate the coming of the Advent Season. Take a look at our many resources on the table in the lobby. You can find wonderful children activities and daily reflection booklets to help prepare for Christmas by keeping the Advent season holy. Send something to your grandkids or college kids to remind them of this season too. THE LIGHT IS STILL ON FOR YOU It s Been a Loooong Time Since My Last Confession Each Catholic parish in the diocese will have their doors open and lights on Wednesday, Dec. 11 from 7 to 9 pm. If you have been reluctant to come to the sacrament, have been away for some time or just found it difficult to get to confession, this is a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with Christ and His Church. The next concert in our series is Sunday, December 15 at 3 PM featuring The Tri-County Choir conducted by one of St. John Neumann's own, Linda Wallace. Come celebrate with us! Shared Prayer of Thanksgiving and Praise This Thanksgiving how will you give thanks to the Lord? It may be with family or friends with whom we have been blessed with. Maybe there is a more fundamental need to come back and give thanks to the Lord. This year we are asking the people of St John Neumann to leave Wednesday evening--thanksgiving Eve available to attend a larger Thanksgiving Service in conjunction with Ingomar United Methodist Church and Northmont Presbyterian Church. We have met to plan this event and would hope that all three churches participate in this shared prayer. The service will begin at 7:30pm on November 27 at Ingomar United Methodist Church. The choirs of the three churches will join in leading the singing. All are invited to come and join in fellowship after the service downstairs in their community center. We have all received many blessings and gifts for which we need to give thanks. Mass on Thanksgiving Day, November 28 will be at 10am at SJN, and we invite you to come and give thanks with your faith family through the Eucharist--which means to give thanks. 4 YOUTH MINISTRY High School Youth Ministry: ENCOUNTER This coming weekend, Nov th is our annual Fall Retreat. Please keep all the youth of SJN in your prayers as we go away for the weekend to grow deeper in our relationship with both Christ and each other! Our next high school youth group will be held on Sunday, Dec. 8th from 12:30-2:30pm. We hope to see you there! The entire parish is invited to join the youth group at our monthly "Road to Emmaus" evening of worship and Eucharistic Adoration. It is being held on Thursday, Dec. 12th from 7-8pm. Take a break from your busy lives and come spend just one hour with the Lord. Middle School Youth Ministry: IGNITE Our next IGNITE youth group dates are as follows: Wednesday, Nov. 20th: 6:30-8pm Wednesday, Dec. 11th: 6:30-8pm Wednesday, Dec. 18th: 6:30-8pm SACRAMENTS TONIGHT DON T MISS IT TONIGHT EVENING OF REFLECTION FOR CONFIRMATION CANDIDATES, PARENTS AND SPONSORS SUNDAY, NOV. 17 FROM 7 to 9 pm is a special time of reflection and preparation for our Confirmation class All Candidates and their parents and/or sponsors are invited to participate in this awesome time of prayer for the gifts of the Spirit. Just as the Apostles prayed before Pentecost, so we pray before this celebration of Confirmation. All are welcome to join us in prayer and adoration on this night. CONFIRMATION - DEC. 7 AT 11 AM Our time of preparation continues for our 9th graders on their way to Confirmation. This includes participation in Youth Group. Also, please complete all paperwork and return to the Rel. Ed. office. Continue to pray for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, make it to Youth Group and see you at Mass every week. You are all in our special prayers at SJN. RCIA-JOURNEY IN FAITH Hold in prayer our 4 adults and 2 children who are journeying in faith with us. TODAY, Sunday, November 17 at the 11:30 Mass, they will be formally introduced to the community and together we will celebrate the RITE OF WELCOME AND ACCEPTANCE. We pass on to them the sign of our salvation - the sign of the cross. We pray that through this sign they may come to know and follow Jesus who is our strength in this journey. As a community we open the door for them in this Year of Faith and give thanks for their presence here. BAPTISM PREP As you welcome new life into your family through pregnancy, birth or adoption, keep the Lord close. Call to register (ext. 12) for our next Baptism Prep session on November 24 from 10:30 to Noon. Through the sacrament of Baptism may we all grow in faith. SPIRITUAL ST. NICHOLAS' DAY COOKIE BAKING/DECORATING EVENT On Monday, December 2, 10 am-noon, SJN High school teens (6th-12th graders) will make cut out cookies, provide a skit on St. Nick while the younger kids decorate and package cookies, and make cards to accompany them in goody bags. (Please be sure to alert us to food allergies.) From 6-7:30 pm that evening, we have scheduled a St. Nicholas celebration with pizza. We will end with prayer, reflecting on how we can imitate St. Nicholas' model of anonymous giving to those in need around us. This is a family event for all ages. Parents are needed to make dough ahead of time, help clean up & help deliver the goodies on St. Nick s Day, Friday, Dec. 6. BOOK OF LIFE Please enter the names of your deceased loved ones and the date on which they entered eternal life in our Book of Life in the narthex. November is traditionally the month when we remember all those who have died and is sometimes called the month for All Souls. We call them to mind by name and pray for them at each Mass. Eternal light grant to them O Lord. May they rest in peace. SCRIPTURE STUDY This Thursday, Nov. 21, adults are invited to come share the Scriptures from 10 am to 11:30. Next Week, the group will meet on Tuesday, Nov. 26, since Thanksgiving Mass is at 10 am on Thursday. All are welcome. 5 SHARING TREE PROJECT This year we mark another year of Sharing Our Love and Giving Hope to those less fortunate so that their Christmas may be truly blessed. We have children s and adult s names from 12 agencies who are requesting our help. Please select a tag(s) from the tree & purchase a gift for that individual - sizes & wishes are listed. Once gifts are wrapped, please affix the tag or a facsimile SECURELY to each gift. The gifts must be brought to church NO LATER THAN 12:30 PM ON SUNDAY, DECEMBER 8. We helped pack 1100 boxes for senior citizens at Lawrence County food bank on October 23 and will again do senior boxes on an assembly line with other folks. Meet at the church's back doors at 8: 00 AM to carpool; return approx 2:00 PM after lunch out together. Limit: 14 volunteers.
