3 PARISH NEWS PARTNERS IN THE PROMISE As a society, during these days we can be in something of a postpartum depression. Our celebrations of Christmas and the New Year are over, and after today many of us will put away the decorations and the last visible remnants of the celebrations of the past weeks. The apostle Paul today uses the expression partners in the promise. This is an uplifting phrase for us to reflect upon, and to think of as our own calling in these days following the birth of the Lord. What is this promise? We can find it in the gifts the magi bring: it is a promise of being a royal priesthood (gold), a holy nation (frankincense), a people set apart for self-giving (myrrh). We find more of the promise in Isaiah - a light shines upon us! In the psalm we know a promise of a world of flowering justice, profound peace, the poor rescued, pity for the lowly and the poor. This is the promise; and one of the best ways for us to lift ourselves out of any possible low spirits we may be suffering is to live out our partnership in this promise each and every day. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED We are looking for a few good men and women to help us with counting the Sunday collection after Mass each week. If you are willing to give a few hours of your time after the 9:30 Mass every couple of months, please call Mike Conroy at CHRISTMAS Our Jesse Tree has become our Christmon Tree in the narthex. We remembered our ancestors in faith all through Advent. Now we rejoice in Emmanuel - God With Us this Christmas Season. Each Chrismon is a monogram symbol of Christ. These ornaments were made by members of our Women s Guild back in the beginning years of St. John Neumann.

4 DIVORCED AND SEPARATED SUPPORT GROUP MEETINGS STARTING ON JANUARY 5 The Divorced and Separated support group jointly sponsored by Sts. John & Paul, St. Richard and St. John Neumann parishes will begin its next 13 week cycle of meetings on Monday, January 5, This group provides caring support to anyone who is experiencing the pain of separation or divorce. Meetings are on Monday evenings from 7:00-9:00 PM and will be held at St. John Neumann Church in the Youth Room. Anyone who has questions or would like more information should contact Ralph Joy ( or rjoy205@verizon.net) DIVORCECARE FOR KIDS Helping your Children Heal from the Hurt of Divorce-Meetings Starting on Jan. 5 DivorceCare for Kids is a special group to help children heal from the hurt caused by the separation or divorce of their parents. At our weekly DC4K group, kids make friends with other kids who understand how they feel and the things they are going through. The DivorceCare for Kids group jointly sponsored by Sts. John & Paul, St. Richard and St. John Neumann parishes will begin a 13 week cycle of meetings on Monday, January 5, YOUTH MINISTRY Encounter Youth Ministry Encounter returns on January 11 th, Why not make it your New Years resolution to attend regularly and bring a friend. We always have lunch followed by games, zany icebreakers, a message relevant to your everyday life and faith. We start after the 11:30am Mass & finish at 2:30pm. Save the Date! Our Catholic Heart Workcamp trip for 2015 will be June in Mishawaka, IN. Teens in grades 8-12 are invited to participate. Mark your calendars now, more info to follow. The weekend focuses on rebuilding marriage through better communication, listening and understanding. Beginning with the New Year, we will meet again on Thursday morning - Jan. 8 at 9:45 am. We study the coming Sunday readings with some history and meditation. No previous Bible study is required. A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE BY BUD OZAR The Magi in today s gospel were led to Jesus by a star. Who are the stars your children follow? Don t let it be the tabloid stars. Resolve in this New Year to be the guiding star in the life of your children. GOOD SHEPHERD GOOD SHEPHERD SESSIONS RESUME THE WEEK OF JANUARY 6-10, FAMILY MASSES BEGIN JANUARY 14 Have you ever been to a Family Mass? These Masses are scheduled during a break from our regular Good Shepherd sessions to help the children connect what they are learning in the atrium to what happens when we gather as a community for the Holy Mass. Children bring with them their knowledge of church seasons and colors, prayer and gestures, parables and prophecy. Parents model full participation in liturgy through active listening, spoken prayer and song. We even train children who are usually considered too young to be altar servers and lectors, while the youngest children help bring up the gifts. All children from preschool through 6 th grade are invited to sit at the foot of the altar for Father Al s homily. We invite our Parish Family to join our Good Shepherd Families at these special Masses. Family Masses will take place at both 4:30 and 6:30 pm on these Wednesdays: January 14, 21, 28 and February 4. Where else do you have the opportunity on a week night to join in worship with a church full of spirited adults and children? Let us come together in praise and thanksgiving for the great gift of in Word and Eucharist. FAMILY MASS TRAINING We are in need of new children to serve as lectors or altar servers for our upcoming Family Masses. Lector training for children who are in 3 rd grade or older will be held on Monday, January 5 from 4:30 5:30 pm. Children in 4 th grade or older who would like to be altar servers can attend training on Monday, January 5 from 4:30 5:30 pm. Please sign up by calling the Religious Education secretary at Ext. 12.

5 CATHOLIC VISION OF LOVE The Diocese of Pittsburgh requires that all students from Kindergarten through 8th grade attend a session on the Catholic Vision of Love each year. The sessions are: Grades K-3rd, Saturday, Jan. 31 from 2-4 pm Grades 4th-6th, Saturday, Jan. 10 from 3-5:30 pm Please call , ext. 12 to register Children who are unable to attend, please complete online lessons. For more information, please attend a Parent Meeting after the 9:30 or 11:30 am Mass TO- DAY on Sunday, Jan. 4. SACRAMENTAL FIRST RECONCILIATION FAMILY ACTIVITY All children preparing for 1st Communion this spring and their families are expected to participate in our Family Activity for First Reconciliation on Sunday, Jan. 11. Time is open from 2:30 till 6 pm. Parents should call the Rel. Ed. Office to choose their time to begin this activity. The event last approximately 75 minutes and begins every half hour with 6 families in a group. Please register with the Religious Ed secretary, Lisa as soon as possible. RCIA The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is the common process for all those seeking full sacramental life in the Catholic church. Our candidates (already baptized in another denomination) and catechumens (never baptized) will meet next Wednesday, Jan. 7 to continue this journey of faith. They have answered the Lord s call and need you to keep them in your daily prayer. This is a huge step in life and we ask your support and encouragement as these four prepare for the Rite of Acceptance on Jan. 18 at the 9:30 am Sunday Liturgy. MARRIAGE PREP Plans consume us as we prepare for a wedding. So much to do and so many people to consult. Yet the wedding is just one day and the marriage is a lifetime. Put some good planning in the lifetime sacrament of matrimony with marriage prep at SJN. Register now for Saturday, March 7 - online or call the rel. ed. office. We couldn t have done it without all your help and energy! The agencies we provided gifts for: Alpha House Angel s Place Catholic Charities Crisis Center North Girls Hope Genesis House Gwen s Girls Holy Family Group Home Holy Family (SNAP) Light of Life Life Line Miryam s House Sisters Place Jesus in Disguise More than 784 gift requests were fulfilled, 577 of them were for children under the age of 18. They all had a Christmas that was made more meaningful by SJN s generosity. A special Thank You to Cathy Vollmer for her commitment, endless energy, and her many hours of organizing this special project. A note of thanks also to the families who at the last minute were able to purchase gifts so that everyone on the tree would have something to open on Christmas. Thank you again - SJN is truly blessed! TOP PANTRY DONORS SJN was listed in North Hills Community Outreach s annual report as their top pantry donor, donating more than $13,650 in food items. Your generosity is overwhelming when we request food items, especially on short notice. Thank you for your commitment to help those struggling families and vulnerable seniors. MEASURING SUCCESS Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles that one has overcome while trying to succeed. GOD S WORD TODAY The magi from the east followed a star to the house where they found the child Jesus with Mary his mother. This star guided them to the Lord. On this feast of Epiphany, when we celebrate the manifestation of Christ to the world, it might be good to ask ourselves where we find the stars in our own lives that lead us to Christ. Each of us is deeply aware of those people and situations that draw us away from the Lord. How aware are we of situations and people that lead us closer to the Lord? Perhaps we can take the opportunity today to ask the Lord to send more stars into our lives - to present us with situations and people who truly make manifest the very presence of God. As we listen to the holy scriptures today, let us ask God to give us the strength to turn away from those, like Herod, who deceive us, and to turn more readily to those who show us the way to truth and goodness in the Lord.
