GATHERING OF CATHOLIC MEN All Catholic Men are invited to join the Catholic Men s Fellowship for the 10th annual gathering on September 19. Invite a friend and get your tickets ($40) from Craig Schweiger at GOOD SHEPHERD PRESCHOOL RELIGIOUS ED OFFERED Did you know that children have a unique relationship with God, especially before age six? At SJN, we invite children from ages 3-6 to weekly sessions in a space that is specially prepared for them. Through Montessori hands-on materials they experience the richness of our Scriptures and liturgical celebrations. Through those same materials, the children hear the voice of the Good Shepherd calling them into a closer relationship, which brings them serenity and great joy. We also received this note from Karen Schnopp: Just a note to say thanks so much to everyone there in Pittsburgh at your church and community who give and help every year to make what I do possible. I really love my work here in the community but without the love and kindness of people like you I couldn t continue it every year! Thank you so much. RELIGIOUS ED PLACMENTS TO BE SENT Thank you to all families who have registered their children for Religious Education. We will notify you of your child s placement by e -mail no later than Monday, August 17. If you have registered and do not receive an by that date, please contact the Religious Ed office at Ext. 12. If you have not yet registered, please do so as soon as possible. Some Good Shepherd sessions are closed, so it is important to specify three different times. Please note that the Tuesday 4:30 6 sessions are closed for Levels I and II.

4 GOOD SHEPHERD CATECHISTS NEEDED Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is our parish religious education for children from Preschool through Grade Six. This program, based on Montessori educational methods, has grown to where nearly 350 children in 31 sessions attend weekly. Each year, catechists move out of the parish or just move on, leaving us in need of newly trained catechists. Perhaps the Lord is calling you to this rewarding and spiritually nourishing ministry. All Good Shepherd catechists are carefully prepared through a retreat-like formation course that covers both the content and methods to be used with the children. Barbara Matera, nationally certified formation leader, and Barbara Stokes are offering a rare Saturday course beginning in October. It will meet no more than twice a month from 11:30 am 5:30 pm and will certify participants to be a Level I catechist with 3-6 year old children. Please pick up a brochure in the parish lobby or call Barbara Matera at Ext. 18 for more information or to register. YOUTH MINISTRY NEW ASSISTANT YOUTH MINISTER Hello everyone! It is with great joy that I join the St. John Neumann community as the new Assistant Youth Minister. I look forward to meeting many of you. First, I'd like to tell you a bit about myself. I grew up in Wexford, and attended Sts. John and Paul until it was time to graduate from North Allegheny and move to John Carroll University in Cleveland. In my four years at John Carroll, I learned a great deal about the Jesuit Catholic Tradition (and managed not to be converted into a Browns fan (Go Steelers!). After graduation from Carroll in 2014, I worked at the National Catholic Reporter in Kansas City for 7 Months. But print journalism wasn't where God was calling me to be. Now I work at Sts. John and Paul as their Media and Marketing Specialist during the day, and thankfully, I'll be working at John Neumann, leading the Ignite Program. Here is where I'll need your help. First and most importantly, the Ignite Core Team, our 7th and 8th graders, and I need your prayers. As we journey toward a relationship with Christ, I can't emphasize how important your support is. Secondly, we are looking for high school and adult leaders to join our Core Team. Working with the youth is an amazing way to leave a lasting imprint on a young person's life. Perhaps what is even more surprising about volunteering for Ignite is witnessing the faith of a young person. It's truly inspiring. All of our summer trips are complete, and they were great! Now it s time to think Fall. Adult leaders, called Core Members are essential to handing out the love of God, and faith we have received to the young people of our parish. Core Teams are comprised of adults who help plan and implement either Ignite middle school sessions or Encounter high school youth group. They attend planning meetings and help with: prayer, skits, small groups and relational ministry. Core members make middle school and high school ministry possible. If you think the Lord might be prompting you to serve, please contact Julie (julie@sjnyouth.org). You are welcome to inquire without any pressure to make a commitment. SAVE THE DATE One of the biggest, best, funniest life changing-est events of the year: The Fall Retreat. Teens grades 9-12 are invited no URGED to join with over 350 teens from around the diocese for inspiring talks, great new music, cool prayer experiences, and time to hang out with your friends. 5 SACRAMENTAL 1ST SACRAMENTS We are close to the beginning of school (as if you didn t know, right?) and we hope you have finished some of your sacrament prep work for 1st Communion and Reconciliation. Please return the entire packet to the Rel. Ed. Office when you complete it. CONFIRMATION SERVICE PROJECT If you haven t signed up for the Confirmation service project, please do so ASAP! We only have openings for Saturday, August 29. Please call the Rel. Ed. office at ext. 12. Don t forget - the Confirmation Retreat for candidates is on Sunday, August 30 at Martina Spirituality Center. Mass is included in the day (10 am-4 pm) RCIC - FOR CHILDREN! Any child over the age of 7 who has not been baptized is always welcome to come to know the Lord through RCIC (Rite of Christian Initiation for Children). This process is adapted from RCIA. Anyone interested is invited to call Fr. Al or Barb Stokes for more info. BAPTISM PREP Welcoming new life into your family soon? Include the sacrament of baptism in your preparations of love. Register now for our Sept. 13 session of baptism prep. by calling the Rel. Ed. office. Session is from 10:30 till Noon on Sunday morning and gives you time for information and reflection. MISC. AUTOMATIC WITHDRAWAL Some parishioners have been concerned that automatic withdrawal of church contributions would negate their ability to designate where their donations should go. This is not true; you can still designate how much to give for each withdrawal and where it should go. The 5 th of the month is for Operating Expense The 15 th of the month is for Church Alive The 25 th of the month is for Parish Share We do not accept credit cards at this time. Parishioners can set the amount for each withdrawal. Please call the parish office (ext. 10) for a short form that needs completed. SOCIAL SOLOS LUNCHEON - TUES. SPIRITUAL BOOKS FOR CHILDREN AND MORE Two new books are now available to help a child find Jesus. Stop in the Rel Ed. office to see - a beautiful Bible for Kids and My Baptism Book. Both are truly wonderful and available for $10 each. Also, don t forget the books in the lobby - Good Gifts! MONDAY SCHOOL FOR ADULTS Our first day will be August 31 from 7-8:30 pm. The speaker will be a surprise! The theme this year is Lighten Up - Try Mercy! We are looking for stories and Spirit that help us on the journey. We all need nourishment, stories, laughter, music and prayer on our life journey. Let s bring them all together and LIGHTEN UP at Monday School. Register thru Barb Stokes and Rel. SCRIPTURE STUDY Reflect on God s word through Scripture Study before the summer is gone. Join us each Thursday morning from 9:45 to 11:15. No previous experience necessary. FROM THE STEWARDSHIP COMMITTEE This week, August 16, the quote from Pope Francis is: We learn many virtues in our Christian families. Above all, we learn to love, asking nothing in return. MORALITY COURSE OFFERED AT SJN The Diocese of Pittsburgh recently decided to award Basic Catechist Certification to all who have completed a Level I Good Shepherd formation course, provided they also take the diocesan course on Morality. A course in Morality, which includes certification for Catholic Vision of Love, will meet at SJN on Sunday evenings from 6:30 9:30 pm beginning October 4. To register or for more information, contact the Religious Ed. office. GOD S WORD TODAY At every Mass we are nourished at two tables: the table of God s sacred word and the table of the Eucharist. Today s readings provide a feast for our souls. Wisdom, that mysterious feminine figure, invites all to her table to eat of her food and drink of her wine. This food helps us to advance in the way of understanding. As wise followers of the Lord, we listen to Jesus words: I am the living bread that came down from heaven. At the table of the Eucharist we feast on this, the most sacred of all foods. We eat and drink of the very body and blood of Christ. From both tables - word and Eucharist - we are given life in abundance. Let us hunger for wisdom and for the presence of Christ as the word of God is proclaimed this day.
