1 The Catholic Community of Saint Barnabas August 6, 2017 The Transfiguration of the Lord PARISH MISSION The family of St. Barnabas Parish celebrates the Eucharist, welcomes and serves all, shares talents, fosters learning, and initiates others into the life of Christ South Longwood, Chicago, IL
2 Pastor Mutterings Dear Friends, I sincerely hope you are enjoying this string of perfect weather. It is difficult to believe we have turned the calendar page into August already. The pace of summer will give way to preparation for school and fall practices. This community sends so many of our young people off to universities and colleges throughout this country and Europe. Please convey our pride and best wishes as they venture forth from home. There is always a tug of the heart when dropping off your baby for the first time at some dorm. Own it. As I look forward to the resumption of parish life, I will certainly continue to enjoy these few weeks left of transition. I have one more commitment with the Vicars Office. We host a national conference of vicars at Mundelein Seminary. This gives those engaged in that ministry an opportunity to hear from experts in various fields and share their experiences. Then I am part of a retreat team at the Jesuit Retreat House in Oshkosh Wisconsin. I have participated in this ministry for the last twenty years. When I was at Our Lady of Ransom, I completed a Master Degree in Christian Spirituality at Creighton University in Omaha. Basically, it was a degree in Ignatian Spirituality. I try to make my own annual retreat at a similar place. Directed retreats are conducted in silence throughout the time period. I actually did the 30 day experience. Finally I need some help in naming this space. Any suggestions? Fr Malloy suggested Donovan's Doodles. I will use this space to hopefully communicate about the parish and life around us here in Beverly and beyond. Let me know. Administration FALL FEST - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! The annual Fall Family Festival has been scheduled for Saturday, September 23rd. The parish is seeking a chair person and a committee of volunteers to help the Men s Club run the event. If you are interested in being on the committee, please contact Gail Byrnes at gbyrnes@stbarnabasparish.org.
3 The people of St. Barnabas take great pride in our rich history and in our beautiful campus. We have each been abundantly blessed through the early gifts of our founding members and are now doing all we can to faithfully tend to that which has been entrusted to our care. Every pledge received moves us a step closer to our goal and to an even brighter tomorrow for this wonderful St. Barnabas family of God. We have accomplished much since our campaign launch and extend our heartfelt thanks to all the good stewards who have given of their time, welcomed volunteers into their homes, shared their financial resources and offered prayers for a successful conclusion. As our efforts continue, we offer the following A Steward's Creed I believe in the gifts of God, and feel gratitude for all I have been given. These gifts are not mine to have, but mine to share. When they are shared, my gifts will make a difference for others. And I believe the act of giving is more important than the gift itself. So I will make giving a priority. I will give to others because so much of what I have comes from others. I will give of who I am, what I do and what I have. To my family, faith and community, I will give of myself. As Christ gave so much for so many, so I will give to you. And I will be thankful for the opportunity to give. May God continue to guide our efforts with the Imagine. Innovate. Inspire. campaign and bless all the good stewards of St. Barnabas Parish! FOR A PLEDGE CARD OR TO SCHEDULE A VOLUNTEER VISIT, SIMPLY CALL SARAH PETERSON AT , EXT. 222 OR SPETERSON@STBARNABASPARISH.ORG. 5 Human Concerns SUCASA Hello and hope everyone is having a wonderful summer. SuCasa barbeque will be held on Sunday August 13th. We will be serving hamburgers, hotdogs, potato salad, oranges and cookies. The complete list of what is needed is below. Thank you everyone for your continued support and hope to see you in August. Thank you and God Bless you. Mary Condon Boxes of frozen hamburgers Hamburger Buns Hotdogs Hotdog buns Potato Salad Cans of Corn Oranges (naval oranges are the best) Cookies Kool Aid Divided Plates Plastic Silverware Cups Napkins BOOK DRIVE Mercy Sister Carol Mucha, former St. Barnabas principal, is conducting a used book sale at Saint Xavier University. Proceeds help students who cannot afford to go on retreats or do service trips to various places in the U.S. She counts heavily on the generosity of others who want to dispose of books of all genres, even CD's, DVD's, videos, magazines, and small electronics, including cell phones (they do not have to work). If you want to help, just bring the items over to McDonough Chapel, 3700 West 103rd Street, between 9am and 4pm. If you are unable to drop off we can pick up or if help is needed to unload, we can do that also. For more information, call Sister Carol at Gratefully, Sister Carol. HAVING A PARTY... for graduation, holidays, your block party, etc? The St. Barnabas Eccommittee can help make your event an ecologically green one. We provide containers for aluminum cans which we will distribute to you and collect. The revenue from these cans is used to purchase eco-friendly products for St. Barnabas events. We also provide paper cups and water coolers to avoid using bottled water. So much bottled water comes from 3rd world countries. People are dying there as we drink their water here. Please don't purchase or drink bottled water. Lives depend on your compassionate choice. You can call the rectory at or call WE ARE CALLED TO SERVE Have a free hour or afternoon? Share your gift of time by volunteering to help those in need. South Suburban and Southwest Chicago PADS, Warming Shelter at St. Barnabas, the Food Pantry at St. Galls, Feeding the Hungry in Robbins, and Visiting Residents at Evergreen Health Care are regularly scheduled activities. St. Barnabas' Service Opportunity Calendar is filled with many ways you can help. XAVIER UNIVERSITY HEALTH CENTER With the fun and relaxation that come from summer weather, it is easy to forget that kids can get sick; however, Saint Xavier University s (SXU) Health Center is already planning for the beginning of the school year with vaccinations for children. With preventable diseases such as pertussis (whopping cough) and measles resurfacing, it is important to protect children and keep them healthy with vaccines. Local families are welcome to receive their immunizations at the Health Center on SXU s Chicago campus, 3700 West 103rd Street. While same day appointments are available, reserving an appointment will reduce waiting time. Most health insurances cover the cost of preventative vaccines at 100 percent. For carriers that do not fully cover services, SXU s Health Center has the option of low, self-pay rates, with the acceptance of cash, credit or check. All community members are welcome to use the Health Center.
