1 The Catholic Community of Saint Barnabas June 19, 2011 The Most Holy Trinity PARISH MISSION The family of St. Barnabas Parish celebrates the Eucharist, welcomes and serves all, shares talents, fosters learning, and initiates others into the life of Christ South Longwood, Chicago, Il stbarnabasparish.org

2 Guest Mutterings THREE FOR ONE While the Trinity is perhaps the Christian doctrine, it's also one of the hardest to explain. Over the centuries people have used everything from sunbeams to shamrocks to try to describe how three Persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, can be one God. Oceans of theological ink have been spilt on the topic. Saint Augustine of Hippo's De Trinitate alone runs to 15 books. Not surprisingly, the Trinity is an official mystery, above reason but not contrary to it. Faith and revelation are also required. Of course the Trinity is present throughout scripture, but the Bible does not use the term. That honor goes first to Theophilus of Antioch, around 180 A.D., and a lot of what Christians believe about the Trinity was battled over in those early centuries of the church. Much was at stake: What people said about the relationship between the Persons was connected to how they defined each of them. So to get the Trinity right you had to get things like the divinity of Jesus right. Behind all the theology, though, is one word: love. The love within God, the love God has for the world, and the divine love in which we, too, have a share. Joel Schorn We thank you, God, for the gift of our fathers, for grandfathers and godfathers, and fathers-in-law, too. Send your Holy Spirit upon our fathers, in whose laps we were cradled, on whose knees we were bounced, by whose hands we were fed, instructed, at times corrected, in whose company we learned to work and play and pray, at whose side we hear your word and celebrate your mysteries. Heal their pains and disappointments. Forgive all that needs to be forgiven. Give to them the good that they have given to others. Welcome into your arms those who have died. Fill this world, O God, with a father's love! We ask this through your Son Jesus Christ, who taught us to pray to you as Abba. He lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, One God forever and ever. Amen.

3 TO ALL THE WONDERFUL PEOPLE OF ST. ST. BARNABAS PARISH... When I first came to St. Barnabas in July of 2005, I was deeply impressed with the recurring theme of Faith, Family and Friendship that so permeates the very essence of this great parish. For faith, family and friendship are three of the most treasured gifts that we can be blessed with and we have been abundantly blessed with all three. During this most tragic and heart- wrenching time as we experienced the death of our beloved son and brother, Patrick, we could only ask, Where is God? And then we looked around and saw all of you. As you cried with us, laughed with us, supported us and loved us, the presence of God was undoubtedly revealed. Words will never adequately express our gratitude to you, our friends at St. Barnabas, for all you have done, but we can assure you that we truly feel held in your prayers and love and this is a great support for us. We will miss Patrick in a way that words will never capture but we also know that he is no longer afflicted by this debilitating and destructive disease of addiction. His Spirit has been set free and he has now soared into the loving and eternal embrace of our compassionate and all merciful God. I feel very privileged to serve at this awesome parish and I just want you to know how deeply touched we were for the outpouring of love and support that we received from you. I am truly blessed to be surrounded by such caring, loving and holy people. With our most sincere and heart- felt thanks, Mike, Kitty, Caitlin, Michael and Kevin Ryan. 4 Parish Life Our family has participated in the Mission Project both years and each experience was uniquely rewarding. Last year was a new experience and the energy of building a house for a family in need was incredible. This year the excitement of building a house for a family in need was definitely in the air again. But, this time I took a step back during the day to look around and take it all in and it was awe inspiring! There were adults working and leading of course, but, each and every child was eagerly, willingly and cooperatively working! They did so much work and deserve to be recognized for what they accomplished! Kudos to the youth of our parish! Keep up the great work!
