Guest Mutterings When I was a college student I visited Ireland, the land of my ancestors. The spiritual highlight of my trip was when my Irish cousins brought me to the town of Raer Cross to stand among the ruins of a stone hut where my grandmother was born. I was surprised that I was so deeply moved. The house wasn t much to look at; the slate walls were crumbling and it was astonishingly small. But I knew in my bones that this was holy ground. I stood in silence and let the stones speak. I wondered about my grandmother s life as a girl, one of many children living in this small hut. I wondered what she thought, at age 16, when she had to leave her home, never to set eyes on it again. I wondered how it felt to board a ship to travel an ocean away to an unknown land without any certainty about what would await her in her new land. I ve since learned that a lot of people who visit their ancestral homeland experience the place as sacred. Which makes me wonder about my own life. Why am I so unaware of its sacredness? Moses had the blessed experience of knowing that, as he was tending his flock, he stood on sacred ground. We should all be so lucky to have such awareness. After all, God dwells among us. And no matter where we spend our days, we dwell in God. Tom McGrath Please remember in your prayers those that have passed away and their families: David Hennessy Vincent Laporta Jacob Evans ST. PATRICK S MASS Saturday, March 12th 4:00 pm Irish Musical Preludes begin at 3:30 pm The annual St. Patrick s Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, March 12th at 4:00 pm. Irish prelude music will begin at 3:30 pm. Please plan to join us for this festive celebration in honor of St. Patrick! The liturgy will be followed by a Soda Bread reception in the church Hall. We are looking for bakers and volunteers to help at the reception. Please contact Geri Doherty at Gdoherty@stbarnabasparish.org or ex. 0.
Mercy Sought, Mercy Given Lent 2016 St. Barnabas Parish WHAT IS THAT CROSS WITH ALL THE NAILS ON IT IN THE NARTHEX??? It is the St. Barnabas Cross of Mercy and it is an opportunity for each one of us to put our faith into action this Lent! Pope Francis has declared 2016 as a Year of Mercy and in response to this jubilee year, we are offering everyone, young and old alike, an opportunity to participate in our Cross of Mercy. In the Pope s writings on the Year of Mercy, he states, Mercy is the very foundation of the Church s life. However, without a witness to mercy, life becomes fruitless and sterile, as if sequestered in a barren desert. The pope goes on to tell us how we can be a witness of mercy, how we can put mercy into action by reflecting and acting on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. He writes, Jesus introduces us to these works of mercy in his preaching so that we can know whether or not we are living as his disciples. Let us rediscover these corporal works of mercy: to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, visit the sick, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead. And let us not forget the spiritual works of mercy: to counsel the doubtful, instruct the ignorant, admonish sinners, comfort the sorrowful, forgive offences, bear patiently those who do us ill, and pray for the living and the dead. We all learned these works of mercy somewhere along the way in our Catholic upbringing, but how many of us ever recall them? So this is the challenge this Lent to accept the Pope s invitation to rediscover these corporal and spiritual works of mercy so needed in our neighborhoods, communities and world today. Our Call to Action: Every time we perform a corporal or spiritual work of mercy, we are invited to tie a ribbon on one of the nails on the cross. The parish goal is to cover the cross with ribbons in other words, to fill our Cross of Mercy with Works of Mercy. Will you accept the challenge? Corporal Works of Mercy Feed the hungry Give drink to the thirsty Clothe the naked Shelter the homeless Visit the sick Visit the imprisoned Bury the dead Spiritual Works of Mercy Counsel the doubtful Instruct the ignorant Admonish sinners Comfort the sorrowful Forgive offenses Bear wrongs patiently Pray for the living and dead

St. Barnabas Grade Spotlight The second graders of St. Barnabas School recently had the opportunity to meet with local government officials. Illinois State Senator Bill Cunningham and Illinois State Representative Fran Hurley met with the students to discuss the process of making laws. The discussion also included the boundaries and population of their respective districts. The students were informed about President Obama s planned visit to the Illinois State Capital. The students also had the opportunity to ask questions of our guests about the legislative process.
Thank you to our Parish Day of Mercy Team and Our parish kicked off the Jubilee Year of Mercy with a Day of Mercy which included opportuni es for whole families, couples, and individuals; all genera ons coming together. Par cipants were invited to explore the theme of mercy, prac ce mercy, and to receive mercy in the sacrament of reconcilia on. Some simply stopped in and lit a candle for someone in need of mercy where others spent me soaking in the various opportuni es. It was an open house style event, welcoming people to come and go at their own pace and schedule. It was contempla ve and interac ve so as to include and welcome the diverse ways that families prac ce our Catholic faith. Our parish School, Religious Educa on and Youth Ministry par cipants took me to consider the year of mercy and together created two colorful walls of flames that represent the Holy Spirit and how we are sent forth to be merciful and share the spirit. Parents and children prayed together, the older genera on shared stories of God s mercy, and children crea vely considered how abundantly they live. It was a rich, faith filled, fun, and powerful day. Our mercy trail was a prayer walk, a journey into the heart of our deepest selves and back out into this world with a greater understanding of who we are and who we are called to be. Individuals, couples, parents and children, and teens took me to walk our mercy trail. It was upli ing to see parents journey the mercy trail with children, reading the booklet to their children, telling the story and encouraging the children to reflect on their blessings and consider ways in which we alone we are not Jesus but together we are the body and Christ.

Sunday Week 02/21/2016 Monthly January 2016 Year-to-Date 0 Our Finances Your Gifts Matter Actual Budgeted Difference Month of January Overview Have you ever wondered how this money is spent? Here is a breakdown of our monthly income vs. expenses. Monthly Income: Sunday, Christmas & Easter Religious Ed and Misc Income Total Income: Monthly Expense: Payroll & Benefits: Business & Rectory Expense: Utilities : Repairs, Maintenance, Landscaping & Capital Expenditures: Altar and Liturgical: Archdiocesan Expense Parish Life & Ministerial Programs: Total Expenses: Net Income (Loss): January 2015 $110, $ 4, $114, $ 48, $ 9, $ 6, $ 4, $ 2, $ 16, $ 1, $ 89, $ 25, Stewardship Spotlight Stewardship is the recognition that all we have is a gift from God. It asks that we use our time, talent, and treasure to fulfill the depth of our commitment to St. Barnabas Parish. We rely on the generosity of our parishioners to fund our ministries and operations, and for this, we are grateful. While stewardship gifts and pledges are paid over a calendar year, St. Barnabas s fiscal year is July 1-June 30 th. In looking at our fiscal year to date, 55% of parishioners give. We are thankful for the gifts we receive and ask the 45% to join this community of donors. New and renewing support is critical to our ending the fiscal year with a balanced budget Think about how important St. Barnabas Parish is to your family, and give with a generous heart. Online giving is a great way to give to the Sunday Offertory. In the past month, nearly 100 parishioners joined Give Central. Online giving saves our parish time and money in printing and mailing costs, and provides more reliable Sunday offertory income. Give generously to him and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to. ~ Deuteronomy 15:10
