2 7 S Perspective Dear Parishoners, Today marks Gaudete Sunday. We light the rose color candle of the Advent Wreath. Gaudete means to Rejoice. Neither word is often used in everyday conversation. Church language adds to our vocabulary and often we don't notice because some words we were taught as children. They are just part of who we are as we become part of the church. The prayers we learned, the actions we learned just became part of us. We became part of the Body of Christ. The Advent wreath is one of those symbols that we know and hopefully reminds us to take inner time for the arrival of Jesus. Today marks the half way of the season. Another wakeup call reminding us that's it's never too late to begin. Next weekend is Christmas already!!!! Please welcome home your college students and tell them we look forward to seeing them over their break. I like to invite them to the rectory for pizza on Wednesday, December 20th at 6pm. Just have them call by Tuesday so I'll know if 5 or 50 are showing up. It is a welcome home and Merry Christmas to catch up with our college kids. We will welcome all sorts of people next weekend. You are the best ambassadors for St. Barnabas Parish. So you might lose your pew for a day with the understanding you might be 'stealing' someone else's pew, so be a good Christian and enjoy the Christmas Liturgy. 3 Spiritual Life THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT COME, LORD JESUS, HELP US TO WEAVE PRAYER INTO OUR EVERYDAY ACTIVITIES. I cannot imagine how many articles, books, and pamphlets have been written through the years on how to pray. Prayer is really such a simple thing and yet each day we feel the time to pray seems to get away from us. Maybe that is where we are mistaken. We are looking for something that is actually with us every hour of every day. It is the opportunity to utter a prayer as we go about our daily schedules. Simply whispering a thank you pray for any good that we experience throughout our day reminds us of where this goodness begins. However, sometimes our days can be so difficult or almost unbearable, we can hardly find the energy to pray. Asking God to be with us during these times is all we really need to do. When a thought comes to us wondering how our friend or family member is doing, visualize them in your mind and whisper a prayer for them. Today is the third Sunday of Advent. We light the rose colored candle as a sign of joyful expectation. This is a perfect day to look at the joyfulness that we experience as we bring prayer into our daily lives from the time we awake until the day is done. Cindy Malloy, St. Barnabas Liturgy Committee St. Barnabas BITTY BUCKEYES SESSION 2 REGISTRATION OPEN! (CLASSES BEGIN JANUARY 16TH) Bitty Buckeyes is a unique program designed for young children (18 months to 3 years of age) accompanied by their adult companions. Each session will expose children to language and motor skill development along with religious instruction through the use of fun, age-appropriate activities including interactive stories, sign language, finger plays, songs, crafts, and exploratory play. Bitty Buckeyes classes meet on Tuesdays, Wednesdays OR Thursdays from 9:00-10:00 a.m. in the Early Childhood Building. HOLIDAY BAND CONCERTS Congratulations to our band members who held their annual holiday concert for students and a separate evening concert for their families last Thursday at Marist High School. Thank you to Mr. Ken Stiak for directing our student musicians -- they did an excellent job!

4 St. Barnabas On Service Day in November, our 1st-graders made ornaments and cards for service men and women who will be overseas during the Christmas season. They just received the note and photos below from Marines stationed in Japan thanking them for their efforts! To the 1st grade class of St. Barnabas, We would like to thank all of you so much for the heart felt letters you sent to us for the holidays. Seeing all of your hard work and time put into your ornaments brought the true meaning of Christmas into our hearts this season. Being away from home can be hard sometimes but special gifts like these make it all the better! 5 Administration IMAGINE CAMPAIGN UPDATE: LET S LEAVE A LEGACY As Fr. Donovan said in his homily a couple weekends ago, the Imagine Campaign is about being a witness to our Catholic faith and being confident in the future of St. Barnabas and our Beverly neighborhood. Future generations will grow from the seeds planted by this generation through contributions to the Campaign. The Campaign is about building relationships. First of all, we have a relationship to the past parishioners of St. Barnabas who left us what we have today. And we are building a relationship to the future parishioners to whom we will leave our legacy of commitment to our Catholic values. Most importantly the Campaign is about building a relationship among ourselves right now. The Leadership Team is your friends and neighbors. New friends have been made within the Leadership Team. As the Team reaches out to you, they are your fellow parishioners. We have no professional fundraisers: the Campaign depends on parishioners reaching out to fellow parishioners. We talk, we listen, we inform, we exchange ideas, maybe we argue, but in the end, we get to know one another better. This makes the St. Barnabas community better and stronger. We are pleased to announce that the Campaign recently received two major gifts from parishioners totaling $25,000. We thank these families for their generosity. We are beginning an alumni out-reach campaign to our former students. Construction planning is underway and we plan to break ground in March Modern and better facilities will energize our community. Who doesn t get excited about something new? It will create space to do new things. It will make St. Barnabas the flagship Catholic parish on the Southside. To those who haven t yet participated in the Campaign: Please consider a pledge. Pledges can be fulfilled over three years. For example, $50 per month equals a generous gift of $1,800 to the Campaign. As you think about your charitable donations in 2017, please consider a gift to the Campaign. We are not tax advisors; however, it might make sense for you to maximize your charitable deductions in 2017 before the proposed new tax law takes effect...something for you to consider. The total collected in this year s campaign came to $2, This project enables The Women s Center to continue efforts to help families: mothers and babies with counseling, material goods assistance and medical help. All services of the Women s Center are free of charge. The Women s Center has over 3500 appointments with women each year and gives away over $500,000 in material goods! Thank you.
