2 OPEN OUR EYES The Pastor s Mutterings There was a devout rabbi who once said, In my youth, fired with the love of God, I thought I would convert the whole world. But soon I learned it would be quite enough to convert the people who lived in my village. When that did not happen, I decided to try to reform the members of my own household. I couldn't convert them either. Finally it dawned on me that I must work only upon myself. But I have stumbled in my attempts to accomplish even that. While the world is surely filled with great injustice, and there are endless lists of causes that we might take up, world reform can only begin with a serious attempt to reform ourselves. The world will find itself being changed at the speed of each personal conversion. That is the reason for undertaking another Lent. We feel so powerless to effect change in the world, but Lent crashes in upon our powerlessness, and says, You can do something, you can be what God calls you to be. This Lent we will ask God to help us Open Our Eyes. Our prayer on this first Sunday of Lent is that we might use this holy time to recognize our own temptations and weaknesses, but that we will not let them overwhelm our response to the grace of God at work in us to build the Kingdom land make a difference. May we pray for each other as we begin this magnificent pilgrimage, that God will guide our Lenten journey from darkness to light and from death to life. Administration Over 30 years ago, someone tapped the shoulder of Fred Haw and asked him if he could "help out" as an Usher for the 4:00 Mass. Little did he know that their definition of "helping out" would provide him with a permanent spot on the roster and come with secondary responsibilities. Then Head Usher, Irv Schultz, also asked Fred to help out on the men's Sunday collection count team. For the last 30+ years, Fred has been a faithful volunteer for both jobs. After Irv retired his calculator in approximately 2004, Fred became the Head Counter on the Men's team. Fred has now retired his calculator but continues to welcome our parishioners to the 4:00 Mass each Sunday as well as his many daily duties at morning Mass and Coffee Shoppe. We are truly grateful to Fred for all of his service to the parish, but we would especially like to extend a heartfelt thanks to him for his service to the collection team!

4 Spiritual Life LENT 2017 Open Our Eyes... This week we begin the holy season of Lent. Through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving we are encouraged to reflect on our life and to see how we meet the challenges of living a Christian life. This Lent, we as a parish family, are invited to Open Our Eyes! We are challenged to see things we would rather not see, and to see things differently, from a new perspective, in new and creative ways. Each week during Lent, we will be challenged to look deep within and beyond ourselves. We pray that God will Open Our Eyes to recognize our own temptations and weaknesses, to recognize the presence of Jesus in our midst, to recognize Jesus in those who are different than us, to recognize the need to overcome our own blindness, and to recognize hope when we are bound by unbelief and fear. Are you up to the challenge? FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT Open Our Eyes to Recognize Our Own Temptations and Weaknesses In our daily routines, it s easy to take things for granted or to ignore the signs calling us to a deeper spirituality. However, Lent is a season that is far from routine, and throughout these 40 days, we will be asked, reminded, implored to Open Our Eyes! In this first week of Lent, we re reminded that even Jesus faced temptation. The evil one sought to use Jesus humanness against Him by exploiting human frailty hunger, pride, greed in an effort to test Jesus trust in God. Despite His hunger, despite the appeal of power and riches, Jesus is fully aware of what the tempter is trying to do. We re being called to a similar awareness, to open our eyes to our own temptations and weaknesses. Does our own hunger prevent us from seeing the needs of others? Do we allow the demands of our daily lives to obscure our view of all that we ve been given? Does our desire to compete cause us to get ahead at the expense of others? This Lent, let us open our eyes to a clearer vision of what it means to be a follower of Christ. ~ Maria Hibbs, Member of the St. Barnabas Liturgy Committee Administration If you missed Mass last weekend, you missed a very exciting announcement! St. Barnabas is the recipient of a recent $500,000 anonymous gift to our capital campaign. This generous donation has moved us past the $3.1 million mark and is a wonderful catalyst for the next steps of our campaign journey. Please mark your calendars for Sunday, March 19 for a special Town Hall Meeting. We will meet in the church immediately following the 10:00 a.m. Mass when members of the campaign team will offer an update, discuss outreach plans and share opportunities for involvement. If you have a question regarding the campaign, please submit it by March 16 th to Sarah Peterson speterson@stbarnabasparish.org. Each member of our faith community will make a difference in the final outcome of our campaign. Become involved and let the difference you make be a positive one for our future!

6 Parish Life COME MARCH WITH US All those who wish to march in the Sunday, March 12, South Side St. Patrick's Parade should meet just west of Western Avenue on 103rd Street behind our Parish Banner at 11:45 a.m. We will march in sun, rain, snow, cold, or warm weather. Look for the BANNER. We welcome: Mothers Club, Men's Club, 8th grade leaders, kindergarten kiddies, and all in between including teachers, our preachers, admin, and good folks of the parish. Children may come with strollers, skates, skateboards, Pogo Sticks, teddy bears or balloons or popsicles, but no bikes (too dangerous--seriously--on the closed parade course, we are told). Moms and dads with strollers are especially invited. Come out to show off the great parish we enjoy. PS: The dress of the day is something as close to a LEPRECHAUN as you can. Please RSVP as soon as you can: or Robertkeeley555@gmail.com ST. St. Barnabas Grade Spotlight The 6th grade presented their Greek mythology projects during Mrs. Douin s social studies classes last week. Each student dressed as their god or goddess for their presentation. Some of the gods and goddesses represented include: Hera, Apollo, Artemis, Hermes, Hestia, Rhea, Cronus, Prometheus, Gaia, Dionysus, Hades, Persephone, Poseidon, Athena, Phoebe, Eros, Nike, and several Greek heroes such as Odysseus, Heracles, Achilles, and Perseus. As you can see from their costumes, they did an amazing job!
