Hope for Those That are Waiting The Catholic Community of Saint Barnabas December 1, 2013 First Sunday of Advent PARISH MISSION The family of St. Barnabas Parish celebrates the Eucharist, welcomes and serves all, shares talents, fosters learning, and initiates others into the life of Christ South Longwood, Chicago, IL ,

The Pastor s Mutterings If you like to hike or take long walks, you are familiar with the saying: The journey is the destination. Your goal is not simply to reach the top of the hill or the end of the trail, but to enjoy the scenery all along the way. Around next bend, something truly amazing may take your breath away! Folks like you know how to appreciate the season of Advent, because Advent is not a trail we travel, or weeks to endure just to make it to Christmas. It is a journey to be experienced for its own sake. During this holy season we have an opportunity to look around and see things from a fresh perspective. We can clear some space within ourselves, and listen to what s going on in our head and heart. Perhaps we re tired, or in pain, or needy, or lonely, or anxious, or angry. Is it possible to see these issues in a new light, in the light of Christ, and become a more whole and holy person? The past is history, the future is mystery! We don t know for sure where or when the journey of our lives will end, but in the meantime we watch, wait, learn, and discover something wonderful around each bend of the road. This is the season of Advent, and the journey is the destination. Christ be our light, and grant that we might have the peace of Christ as we wait, the love of Christ as we act, and the grace of Christ as we speak. Advent 2013 St. Barnabas Parish THE ADVENT WREATH... stands in our midst as symbol of Christ who comes to save us. His light shatters the darkness of sin and death. Each week as the light grows stronger, we grow stronger too in our reverence for and commitment to Christ, and in the hope we carry as we prepare for the coming fullness of God's reign. The wreath s circle reminds us that all is complete in Christ and that all is brought to perfect union in him. Violet candles symbolize Advent s penitence, and a rose colored candle marks the third Sunday, reminding us that the promise of salvation draws near and that the great feast of Christmas is just around the corner.

Spiritual Life ADVENT 2013, CHIRST BE OUR LIGHT Hope for Those Who Are Waiting: So much of our daily lives are spent waiting! Sometimes it is a trivial wait such as in a checkout line at the grocery store. Other times the wait is unbearable as one hopes to hear good news from the doctor or for relief from hunger after a disaster. We often long for peace in our families and in our world. It is easy to become discouraged. Our wait, though, is not without hope. Our hope lies in God s infinite goodness. Just as the Israelites waited in hope for the Messiah, we must also wait in hope as we rely on God s providence. Cindy Malloy (Member of the St. Barnabas Liturgy Committee) INTERESTED IN JOINING THE CHOIR? AFRAID OF THE COMMITMENT? JOIN THE ST. BARNABAS FESTIVAL CHOIR! The members of the St. Barnabas Choir would like to invite anyone who is interested in joining the choir, but who has concerns about the commitment, to join the St. Barnabas Festival Choir. The Festival Choir will begin rehearsing very soon for the 10:30 pm Christmas Eve Liturgy and the 10:00 am Christmas Day Liturgy. The rehearsals are from 7-9 p.m. in the church, as follows: Monday, December 2nd Wednesday, December 4th Monday, December 9th Wednesday, December 11th Monday, December 16th Wednesday, December 18th Anyone who can attend at least five of these rehearsals is invited to sing with the Festival Choir. Faith Formation SPRED (SPECIAL RELIGIOUS DEVELOPMENT), OPENING FOR A YOUNG ADULT BETWEEN 17 AND 21 YEARS SPRED is an Archdiocesan religious development program for children or adults with special needs. The SPRED Group at St. Barnabas will continue enjoying fellowship and friendship, and faith formation, again this January. To learn more about the program, and reserve the spot for your young adult contact Colleen Doherty at colleenjdoh@aol.com. BIBLE STUDY WITH FR. KENNEALLY Parents are invited to join us December 8 at 8:15 a.m. in the Church Hall for an engaging And insightful instructional presentation on our faith story, and for faith sharing with fellow Catholic parents. This is the perfect opportunity for parents whose children are in RE classes during this time, for our school parents, and youth ministry parents too. It is a great way to meet and connect with others in our community too.

Parish Life 2013 PROGRESSIVE MIXER TICKETS ON SALE TODAY! EARLY BIRD DISCOUNT AVAILABLE AFTER MASS! Buy your tickets today for the 2013 Progressive Mixer! This year's mixer is planned for Friday, December 6th. We have new locations, new food, and some new fun themes planned for this year's mixer. It is especially great for new school parents and parishioners to attend as it is a great way to meet people in the parish and start to make new friends! The purpose of the St. Barnabas Progressive Mixer is to raise money for the school staff and teacher gift at the end of the year. The St. Barnabas Men's Club is proud to support a catholic education and we love planning this event because it means so much to our school. The Mixer Committee has agreed that a $60.00 per person early bird price will encourage ticket purchases before the event. If you are unable to attend the event, we still need your donation! Better yet, buy a ticket for your teacher to attend!!!! Tickets are $60.00 per person. Please make your check out to the St. Barnabas Men's Club -There are a few easy ways to purchase tickets. The first, if your child goes to St. Barnabas, your child's backpack, we call it Back Pack Mail. The following folks also have tickets: Geri Doherty, Parish Secretary ex. 0, gdoherty@stbarnabasparish.org, Jimmy Smith: , jacksmith3208@gmail.com, Greg Liss greg.liss101@gmail.com Nick Stiglich thestiglichs@sbcglobal.net RED TAG St Barnabas Parish is, once again, participating in the Red Tag program. You probably know that this program has provided over a thousand gifts each year to those in need especially young children and youth. Those who receive these gifts would have little or nothing if not through this program. The generosity of our parishioners is beyond compare. As in many areas of parish life, the response to this program is overwhelming and humbling in its generosity. We ask your help to provide gifts, once again, if you can. The Red Tags will be posted the week before Thanksgiving and gifts are due no later than Dec 15 th in order to be delivered on time to the recipients. We ask that you prayerfully consider taking one or two tags and bring in the gifts with the tags attached, unwrapped, on or before that day. You can drop them off in the church vestibule. If you have any questions, please call Nancy Harvey at Thank you so very much. We are better TOGETHER

Education First Reconciliation Family Gathering Sixty one mostly 2nd graders children enrolled in St. Barnabas School and Religious Education Program are preparing to celebrate the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist this year. Recently the children and their parents gathered at Church for an evening of Reflection on Reconciliation. Right: Fr. Malloy and 4th grader, Mary Rita Moran, role play what happens when someone confesses their sins in the sacrament. Mary Rita s younger brother and the other boys and girls will celebrate their First Reconciliation in January. Left: Boys and Girls raise hands to answer questions posed by Fr. Malloy about Reconciliation. Left: Near the end of the evening, parents brought their child forward for a moment of prayer in front of the Scriptures and an icon of Jesus, the Good Shepherd. These families will celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation with their children on January 14th or 15th. Please keep them in your prayers.
