1 Mercy Sought, Mercy Given Lent 2016 The Catholic Community of Saint Barnabas March 13, 2016, Fifth Sunday of Lent PARISH MISSION The family of St. Barnabas Parish celebrates the Eucharist, welcomes and serves all, shares talents, fosters learning, and initiates others into the life of Christ South Longwood, Chicago, IL

2 Guest Mutterings I remember in the eighth grade, Sister William sharing with the class the story of the woman caught in adultery. Sister explained that what John the Evangelist excluded when he gave us this gospel was the listing of sins that those who wanted to stone the woman committed. That was what Jesus wrote on the ground. Sister told us that God also knew all of our sins and that, if we were not careful we could lose all the blessings given to us. So we should not be passing judgment on anybody else. But that slipped right past me. It was the fact that Jesus knew everything I had done and he might somehow let my sinful cats out of the bag for all to see that frightened me. We obviously do not know what Jesus wrote. But the reality is that each one of us is a sinner. Saint Paul admits in the second reading and we, too, need to admit that we have not attained perfect moral maturity. This is why Lent is so important. Freeing ourselves from our sinfulness takes all the energy and strength we have, and more. We cannot dissipate it by being judgmental about anyone else. It s precisely that selfrighteousness that has given religion a bad name. Instead, by admitting our sinfulness, we can experience that absolute forgiveness that Jesus dying and rising from the dead bring, and then we must go and sin no more. Spiritual Life Fr. Dominic Grassi LORD, ARE YOU GOING TO WASH MY FEET? (John 13:7) Do you remember this question asked by Peter in John s gospel? Do you remember Jesus reply? Unless I wash you, you will have no inheritance with me (John 13:8). Jesus then goes on to explain that if he has washed our feet we must wash each other s feet. We invite you to accept this challenge at our Holy Thursday Liturgy. Foot washing stations will be set up in the front and back of church for all to partake in this most sacred, humble and touching ritual. You will be invited to approach a station, have one of your feet washed and in turn wash the foot of another. Please remember to wear shoes and socks that may be easily removed as we participate in this humble service. EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS NEEDED! We are in need of Eucharistic Ministers! Anyone interested in serving the faith community of St. Barnabas as a Eucharistic Minister is invited to attend Initial Training for New Eucharistic Ministers. This two session training program includes prayer, reflection and praxis where participants will explore what it means to be an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist in the 21 st century. Times and locations of the training are listed below. Upon completion of the initial training, a third session will be held at St. Barnabas to cover the specifics of being a Eucharistic minister at our parish. Please contact Kitty Ryan at ext. 226 or ktryan@stbarnabasparish.org if you are interested in attending these sessions. Mondays, April 18 & 25, 7:00-9:30 pm, St. Francis of Assisi Parish,15050 S. Wolf Road.

3 Mercy Sought, Mercy Given Lent 2016 St. Barnabas Parish WHAT IS THAT CROSS WITH ALL THE NAILS ON IT IN THE NARTHEX??? It is the St. Barnabas Cross of Mercy and it is an opportunity for each one of us to put our faith into action this Lent! Pope Francis has declared 2016 as a Year of Mercy and in response to this jubilee year, we are offering everyone, young and old alike, an opportunity to participate in our Cross of Mercy. In the Pope s writings on the Year of Mercy, he states, Mercy is the very foundation of the Church s life. However, without a witness to mercy, life becomes fruitless and sterile, as if sequestered in a barren desert. The pope goes on to tell us how we can be a witness of mercy, how we can put mercy into action by reflecting and acting on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. He writes, Jesus introduces us to these works of mercy in his preaching so that we can know whether or not we are living as his disciples. Let us rediscover these corporal works of mercy: to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, visit the sick, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead. And let us not forget the spiritual works of mercy: to counsel the doubtful, instruct the ignorant, admonish sinners, comfort the sorrowful, forgive offences, bear patiently those who do us ill, and pray for the living and the dead. We all learned these works of mercy somewhere along the way in our Catholic upbringing, but how many of us ever recall them? So this is the challenge this Lent to accept the Pope s invitation to rediscover these corporal and spiritual works of mercy so needed in our neighborhoods, communities and world today. Our Call to Action: Every time we perform a corporal or spiritual work of mercy, we are invited to tie a ribbon on one of the nails on the cross. The parish goal is to cover the cross with ribbons in other words, to fill our Cross of Mercy with Works of Mercy. Will you accept the challenge? Corporal Works of Mercy Feed the hungry Give drink to the thirsty Clothe the naked Shelter the homeless Visit the sick Visit the imprisoned Bury the dead Spiritual Works of Mercy Counsel the doubtful Instruct the ignorant Admonish sinners Comfort the sorrowful Forgive offenses Bear wrongs patiently Pray for the living and dead

4 Spiritual Life ARE YOU PLANNING TO ATTEND OUR HOLY WEEK SERVICES? Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil, known as the Triduum, are the three holiest days of the Church year. Together, the three days form one liturgy. On Holy Thursday we recall that Jesus gave us the Eucharist so that we can participate in the same meaningful experience as the apostles did then. Join us as we celebrate the memorial of the very first Eucharist. On Good Friday we relive the reality of the suffering and death that Jesus willingly suffered for each one of us. Join us as we are invited to walk the way to Calvary and reflect on the abundant love that Jesus has for each one of us. At the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday, we experience, through word and song, the continuing promise and presence of God in our lives from Old Testament times to the present. As we hear the readings we are reminded once again that Jesus is the fulfillment of the Old Testament promises and that those promises are just as alive now as they have been throughout the history of salvation. Join us as the Vigil readings come to life in word and music as we listen to the stories told from generation to generation of believers, stories told by the people of God. Join us as we receive new members into the Church and our parish community. Celebrate the wonder and hope as we hear people say, I want to be a part of what and who you are. Join us as we hear the wonderful story of our salvation through Jesus Christ. Some people recall the long Easter Vigils of decades ago and are hesitant to attend now. The members of the St. Barnabas Liturgy Committee invite you to reconsider. While the present Easter Vigil is somewhat longer than a regular Sunday mass, it is a beautiful and vibrant experience that is the foundation of all that we believe. May our celebration of Easter this year mean more to us than it ever has before. 8 Sunday Week 03/06/2016 Monthly February 2016 Year-to-Date 0 Our Finances Your Gifts Matter Actual Budgeted Difference Month of February Overview Have you ever wondered how this money is spent? Here is a breakdown of our monthly income and expenses. Monthly Income: Sunday, Christmas & Easter Religious Ed and Misc Income Total Income: Monthly Expense: Payroll & Benefits: Business & Rectory Expense: Utilities : Repairs, Maintenance, Landscaping & Capital Expenditures: Altar and Liturgical: Archdiocesan Expense Parish Life & Ministerial Programs: Total Expenses: Net Income (Loss): February 2015 $68, $ 2, $70, $ 41, $ 4, $ 2, $ 2, $ $ 0 $ (486.63) $ 51, $ 18, Stewardship Spotlight Stewardship is the recognition that all we have is a gift from God. It asks that we use our time, talent, and treasure to fulfill the depth of our commitment to St. Barnabas Parish. We rely on the generosity of our parishioners to fund our ministries and operations, and for this, we are grateful. HOW TO GIFT APPRECIATED SECURITIES FOR TAX BENEFITS One of the most financially attractive ways for you to help St. Barnabas is to make gifts of appreciated securities, such as stocks or mutual funds. Gifts of appreciated securities held for more than a year can provide you with a larger tax benefit versus just giving cash. When you gift securities you may be able to deduct the full market value of your contribution on the date of the gift, rather than your original cost basis, which may help you by avoiding capital gains taxes. (subject to IRS AGI rules check with your CPA, St. Barnabas does not provide tax advice). Gifting shares of appreciated securities directly to St. Barnabas is simple, provides a tax benefit to you and aids our Parish in our mission. To learn more or to make your stock gift, visit the Stewardship section of our website, or Contact Dan Hack, , dan.hack@morganstanley.com Online giving is a great way to give to the Sunday Offertory. In the past month, nearly 100 parishioners joined Give Central. Online giving saves our parish time and money in printing and mailing costs, and provides more reliable Sunday offertory income. Give generously to him and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to. ~ Deuteronomy 15:10
