2 Guest Mutterings During the 1994 Rwandan genocide, the Benebikira Sisters sheltered hundreds of orphans and others who sought refuge in their convents. When a militia stormed their motherhouse and demanded that the sisters separate themselves by ethnic groups, the sisters said no--aware that at other convents 20 sisters had been killed for standing up to militants. The militia then took all their food, cut the water lines, and told the sisters they would come back to kill them. After the genocide, the sisters found themselves caring for about 350 orphans. The children had food and clothing, Sister M. Juvenal Mukamurama told Kathleen L. Sullivan of the National Catholic Reporter, but it was no life for them. Family is very important in our country. They needed a family. So the sisters built 39 houses and grouped the orphans into families of six to eight children. Rwanda wants to move forward, said Sister Mukamurama, who is marking her 40th anniversary as a Benebikira sister (Benebikira means Daughters of Mary in Kinyarwanda, the native language of Rwanda). We want to build our country, our relationships, a new life. We are no longer seen as Tutsi or Hutu. We live together. We are no longer separate. We are Rwandans. Blessed are the poor in spirit, scripture tells us. The Lord loves the just; the Lord protects the stranger. Joel Schorn 2011 ARCHDIOCESAN ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL BEGINS seek first the kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33) Many of our parishioners either have or soon will receive a mailing from Cardinal George. He will ask that you make a pledge to the 2011 Annual Catholic Appeal. Please respond generously. The appeal supports parish ministries that provide religious education to children, youth and adults in economically disadvantaged communities. It is also one of the largest philanthropic sources of financial support for Catholic schools in the Archdiocese. This year, the theme of the Appeal is seek first the kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33). Jesus taught that we are not to worry about the things of this world. Rather, we are to seek the kingdom of God and the Father will reward us. God provides all that we have and all that we are. Stewardship, in part, is the recognition of God s gifts and the obligation to return a significant portion of our gifts to assist in his work. Our gifts to our parish, to our Archdiocese and the Church throughout the world are given in gratitude for what God has given us. A gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal helps to provide education, services, and ministry to thousands within and outside of our Archdiocese. Please prayerfully consider making a significant pledge to the 2011 Annual Catholic Appeal.

4 Administration IRA CHARITABLE GIFTS ARE BACK IN BUSINESS Congress has recently re-authorized legislation that allows you to make charitable gifts from your IRA accounts during 2010 and 2011 without incurring income tax on the withdrawal. The IRA Rollover provides you with an excellent opportunity to make a gift during your lifetime from an asset that would be subject to multiple levels of taxation if it remained in your taxable estate. Because Congress acted so late in 2010 to pass this legislation, you can make a gift from your IRA until January 31, 2011 and still elect for it to count as a gift and as your minimum required distribution for To take advantage of this opportunity for tax year 2011, you must act by December 31, To qualify: You must be age 70 ½ or older at the time of gift. Transfers must be made directly from a traditional IRA account by your plan provider to St. Barnabas Parish. Funds that are withdrawn by you and then contributed do NOT qualify. Gifts from 401k, 403b, SEP and other plans do not qualify. Your plan administrator may make the check out to St. Barnabas Parish and mail the check to you. But you must postmark the check to us by January 31, 2011 for this tax year, or December 31, 2011 for the 2011 tax year. Gifts must be outright. Distributions to donor-advised funds, certain supporting organizations, or life-income arrangements such as charitable remainder trusts and charitable gift annuities are not allowed. Benefits Qualified charitable distributions: Can total up to $100,000; Are not included in your gross income for federal income tax purposes on your IRS Form 1040 (no charitable deduction is available, however); Example: Suppose John has $500,000 in an IRA and he also wants to contribute $25,000 to St. Barnabas Parish. He can authorize the administrator of his IRA to transfer $25,000 to the parish. The $25,000 distribution to St. Barnabas Parish will not be subject to tax and will be counted toward his annual minimum required distribution. If you would like a sample letter of instruction that you can send to your IRA plan provider, please call Debbie Tanis, Director of Development at x242.
