2 7 S PERSPECTIVE Dear Parishioners, The Gospel writers sure are clever that even thousands of years later we are still learning. The stories are not complicated just examples of humanity that continue to mirror all of our foibles and goodness, fears and hopes, clarity and confusion. Last week in Mark's Gospel the rich young man appeared for a cameo. Go and sell all you have give to the poor and follow me. Follow me in total freedom. The world's concerns will no longer be your problem. And now this week Jesus own apostles James and John, the sons of Zebedee, quietly ask for a place of honor. In the Gospel of John their mother asks Jesus for the same favor. I always found that more believable because I know without a doubt my Mother would have quietly suggested that honor for her only and favorite son me. Jesus reminds them and all of us it's not about honor at all, it is about service. When we get away from these simple truths sooner or later it will collapse. We are now living through the collapse. Yet because of our faith, this not the end but only a new beginning again. Signs of life on our own consecrated soil called St. Barnabas point to hope and possibility. This Friday was the annual day of service for our school. All the kids were committed to age appropriate acts of service and close to seventy parents volunteered to make this day truly successful. What a great day! My hope is that this can become a parish wide day of service. Another sign of life is the tremendous amount of quiet service by many of our parishioners at various soup kitchens, PADS shelters, tutoring sights. People quietly committed to helping the poor and those in need. No official day of service just a quiet witness. Thank you. Another sign of life is your financial commitment to St. Barnabas. The regular Sunday collection and the Imagine Campaign have posted a combined $1,350,438.71for this past fiscal year. We were also generous to the wider Church through the special second collections which were approximately $64,000. The summer months are the low time around here because so many people abandon us and go to their summer homes or on vacation. That is what I've been told and so it must be the truth. However, our expenses remain the same. I encourage one and all to try to make up the difference by being more generous the next couple of weeks. Next week I will comment at all the weekend liturgies about our finances. Human Concerns RESPONDING TO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN OUR COMMUNIITY Today, Saturday and Sunday, October 20 & 21, Fr. Charles W. Dahm, O.P, Director of Domestic Violence Outreach for the Archdiocese of Chicago, will preach at all Masses at St. Barnabas parish. Although largely unseen, domestic violence is rampant in the United States, including in our community. Board members from A New Direction, our local domestic violence agency, will be in the vestibule after all masses with information about their services and to answer questions. 3 Human Concerns RESPECT LIFE MONTH THE BABY BOTTLE PROJECT Return your baby bottle, help a mother in need. Please remember to return your baby bottle today, October 20 21, when you come to Mass. Just drop off your bottle in the baskets located in the Narthex or by the side doors. Please note the baby bottles are recycled afterwards so please return them. Parish Life ST. BARNABAS CLASS OF 1978 The Class of 1978 is hosting its 40th reunion on November 10, starting with mass at 4:00 p.m. at St. Barnabas. Continuing with a celebration at Palermo s, 4849 W. 95th street, Oak Lawn from 7:00-10:00 p.m. The committee is missing a few s so if you know of anyone that graduated in 1978 please pass on the information. BARNABAS FINANCE BOARD The St. Barnabas Finance Board is looking to fill two positions. Are you interested in helping the parish oversee and manage its financial resources? Serving in an advisory capacity to the Pastor, this group assembles and reviews the annual parish budget, approves the school budget, reviews monthly income and expense budgets and oversees the parish s financial investments. To apply, please send a letter of interest to Fr. Donovan including information about yourself and any relevant experience you may have in the fields of accounting or financial management. You will be contacted for a follow-up interview. Education OPEN POSITIONS ST. BARNABAS ATHLETIC BOARD Spring Soccer Coordinator: Organize sign-ups, divide teams and assign coaches for spring soccer. Cheerleading Coordinator: Organize sign-ups, divide teams and assign coaches for St. Barnabas Cheer. Football Coordinator for the 2019 Season: Organize sign-ups, assign coaches and distribute equipment for the football program. Ideally, the new coordinator would be available to "shadow" the current coordinator now to prepare for next year. 6 Faith Formation CATECHIST NEEDED Would you like to share the Good News with some wonderful 3rd grade kids? St. Barnabas is currently in need of a 3rd Grade Catechist for our Religious Education program. (Our current catechist needs to devote some extra time to some personal matters and can no longer teach on Sundays.) BARNABAS SCHOOL Recently, kindergarteners celebrated harvest season with an apple tasting! They first guessed how many seeds they would have, recorded their guesses, and then counted and recorded the actual number of seeds in their own apple. Seed counts ranged from one to eleven! Earlier in the week, they graphed their favorite apple color (red won hands-down) and made an apple craft. - Mrs. Foley & Mrs. Reynders

7 Spiritual Life 2020 PASSION PLAY IN OBERAMMERGAU A PILGRIMAGE TO AUSTRIA, GERMANY AND SWITZERLAND WITH FR. JIM DONOVAN AND KITTY RYAN There is something exciting about the spiritual reawakening of our hearts and souls through the history and experiences of our faith and cultures. We invite you to experience this reawakening by joining us on our Passion Play Pilgrimage to Austria, Germany and Switzerland, August 11-20, We will visit and celebrate mass at many magnificent churches, cathedrals, and monasteries as well as experience the performance of the Passion Play in Oberammergau. In addition to these sacred places, we will visit historical sites, castles, and museums exploring the culture and history of these amazing cities and villages, not to mention the scenic landscapes of the Alps and the beauty of the countryside we will travel through. This pilgrimage will be a wonderful combination of faith, friends and fun offering spiritual renewal with time to pray and play! We will return home refreshed, renewed and enriched in our faith with wonderful memories and new friends. As we come together to celebrate the Eucharist, we will honor all the women and men who have served and who are currently serving our country. We come together to pray for peace. We come together at God s banquet to continue the quest for a just world. We come together in a spirit of hope. We invite members of the military, and their families and friends, to join our parish as we celebrate and support their service and dedication to our country. Father Ken Carlson, reserve chaplain for the US Army, will be the main celebrant and homilist for the liturgy. A special Mass of Remembrance will be celebrated on All Souls Day, Friday, November 2nd at 7 pm. Anyone who has lost a loved one this past year who did not receive an invitation or who was not buried from St. Barnabas and would like to participate in this liturgy by presenting a candle in memory of your loved one is asked to call the rectory at and leave the name of the deceased to be included in the liturgy.
