1 The Catholic Community of Saint Barnabas July 31, 2016, Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time PARISH MISSION The family of St. Barnabas Parish celebrates the Eucharist, welcomes and serves all, shares talents, fosters learning, and initiates others into the life of Christ South Longwood, Chicago, IL 60643,

2 The Pastor s Mutterings I recently read an article about how American life has changed over the years. It offered many examples, but a couple stood out for me and made me think. It stated that since the 1950 s our families are much smaller in size, but the average size of a house has doubled. Even so, there are now more than 30,000 self-storage facilities in the country, for people who need extra space to store all their stuff. That made me wonder about myself. I don t consider myself to be a greedy person, and I don t have a lot of money, but I do have a lot of stuff things, gadgets, software, cameras, books, clothes, food much more than I need. I have stuff in boxes that I haven t opened from my last assignment more than nine years ago! Jesus told a story about a rich man who died before he could build bigger barns for all his stuff. He warned his listeners to take care to guard against all greed, for one's life does not consist of possessions. Someone defined the pursuit of stuff as a disease called affluenza: a painful, contagious, socially transmitted condition of overload, debt, anxiety, and waste resulting from the dogged pursuit of more. It may be opportune for us to ask if we, ourselves, may be afflicted with that illness. The article I mentioned stated that Americans now spend nearly seven more times shopping as they do playing with their kids. One study found that American couples now find just twelve minutes a day to talk to each other. There is an important lesson to be learned from Jesus story: The best things in life are not things. What matters most is faith, family, friends, and forgiveness. It might be a good time to ditch the excess stuff in our lives, because on our journey to the Kingdom, it s best to travel light! Faith Formation PLEASE HELP SPREAD THE WORD! This Fall, we will start a new round of the RCIA Process. RCIA The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the process of spiritual and educational formation through which adults become fully initiated members of the Roman Catholic Church. We are asking for your help identifying and personally inviting anyone who might be considering becoming Catholic. They could be unbaptized, or baptized Christians who want to accept the Catholic faith, or Catholics who did not yet receive the sacraments of Eucharist and/or Confirmation. The number one reason women and men join the RCIA process is because someone they trust invited them to consider it. Please give it some thought. Additional details can be found on the parish website: Look under Sacraments and then click on RCIA/Adult Initiation. Or contact Matt Furjanic, Director of Religious Education, mfurjanic@stbarnabasparish.org, or

3 Education CHILDREN S LITURGY OF THE WORD The Children s Liturgy of the Word Ministry (CLOW) is on summer break. There will be no Children s Liturgy at 10 am Mass during the summer. CLOW will resume after Labor Day, on Sunday, September 11 th and be held at the 10:00 a.m. Mass each Sunday thereafter. We especially wish to thank this year s CLOW leaders: Tom & Catherine Brady, Maura & Sean Barron, Hannah & Karen Lux, Andy & Cindy Neu, Maureen Gainer Reilly, Penelope Robbins, and Margaret Smith. CLOW serves children, ages ~4 yrs. 7 yrs., by breaking open the Sunday Scriptures with/for them at their level of understanding. Children hear a simpler version of the readings from a Children s Lectionary, approved by the U.S. Bishops. CLOW also of benefits parents: relieved from the task of keeping squirming children quiet and attentive during Mass, parents are able to focus more attentively on the Liturgy of the Word in peace knowing that their children are being cared for and are hearing the Word proclaimed to them. We are in need of adults who will proclaim the Word to the children. We are also in need of teens and adults who are willing to assist by reading, leading prayers, and modeling good church behavior. To volunteer for this ministry, please call Matt Furjanic, , or mfurjanic@stbarnabasparish.org. Thank you! RELGIOUS EDUCATION SESSIONS REGISTER NOW Attention New and Returning Families: Registration for Religious Education is open! The registration process is simple and can be done online via on the Religious Education page of the St. Barnabas website. The Religious Education Program will resume on Sunday, September 11 th. Religious Education faith sessions are held on Sunday mornings in the School (Grades Pre-K 8) from 8:15 a.m. 9:50 a.m. The program will continue for 20 weeks through the month of April. Please register IMMEDIATELY so that we can make preparations for another year of growth in the faith! Sacramental Preparation: Students preparing to celebrate the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion generally begin the two year formation process in 1 st grade. Also, students celebrate Confirmation in 8 th grade at St. Barnabas after beginning their preparation in 7 th grade. For a full and comprehensive formation in the faith, students are expected to participate in religious education every learning year and throughout their life cycle. 4 Faith Formation Mission Trip 2016 Reflection As a young adult, there have been very few events in my life when I have realized that the here and now was about to change my life forever. My experience as part of the St. Barnabas High School Youth Ministry Mission trip 2016 to Solsberry Hill was one of those events. On this mission trip, I was pushed to break from reality and live simply for five days. In those five days, I rediscovered what service is truly about and I learned to see the world through a new pair of eyes. In helping organize baby clothes for underprivileged mothers, teaching less fortunate children the water cycle, and harvesting fresh vegetables for the local food pantry, I saw God s mercy working through us who are able to help. In laying stone and mortar to build a tiny house for future Solsberry Hill participants, I saw hope for the people who will come to make a difference in the local community one small project at a time. In living in hand built cabins, I saw the beauty in our host family who so selflessly hosts dozens of retreats every year so they can lead others to carry out God s mission. In gathering every morning and evening for prayer, I saw that God has surrounded me with so many amazing people, the adults of our parish and peers of my parish who are here to encourage and walk with me through my service. At Solsberry Hill, I saw that God is present in every one of us and he has given us the ability to help those who need it most. This ability is truly a gift. The ability to help others is among many gifts I finally recognized during my trip. I was able to make new friends and reconnect with old ones, understand what it means to live simply, appreciate the sound of nature, and, most importantly, thank God for how lucky I am. However, my time at Solsberry Hill taught me that while thanking God for all that I have is important, helping others who do not have as much is just as important. This mission trip has taught me that every human deserves mercy and that we are the ones who can make this happen. God s mission is for us to serve others and ultimately make a difference, great or small, in the world. The greatest lesson Solsberry Hill has taught me is, Take your candle and go light your world (Chase Rice). HSYM Junior

5 Human Concerns PEACE QUOTE Unless we teach children PEACE someone else will teach them violence. C. McCarthy BOOK DRIVE Mercy Sister Carol Mucha, former St. Barnabas principal, is conducting a used book sale at Saint Xavier University. Proceeds help students who cannot afford to go on retreats or do service trips to various places in the U.S. She counts heavily on the generosity of others who want to dispose of books of all genres, even CD's, DVD's Videos, magazines, and small electronics too. If you want to help, just bring the items over to the McDonough Chapel, 3700 West 103rd Street. If help is needed to unload we can do that. For more information call Carol Moriarty at Gratefully, Sister Carol GIVE SUPPLIES FOR CLEANING - KEEP OUR SHELTERS GLEAMING! For the rest of July, a group of Beverly women, volunteers for the Institute of Women Today (IWT), are collecting cleaning supplies. The homeless families living in transitional housing at Maria Shelter and Believe, two 50-bed sites operated by the IWT, always need cleaning items: laundry detergent, dishwashing (by hand) liquid, bleach, cleaning products, string mops, mop pails, brooms, dustpans, gloves (box), paper towels, bathroom tissue, etc. To drop off items at my North Beverly home, please contact me, Laura Spizz, at or lauraspizz.2@gmail.com. HAVING A PARTY... for graduation, holidays, your block party, etc? The St. Barnabas Eccommittee can help make your event an ecologically green one. We provide containers for aluminum cans which we will distribute to you and collect. The revenue from these cans is used to purchase eco-friendly products for St. Barnabas events. We also provide paper cups and water coolers to avoid using bottled water. So much bottled water comes from 3rd world countries. People are dying there as we drink their water here. Please don't purchase or drink bottled water. Lives depend on your compassionate choice. You can call the rectory at or call Thank you from Mother Earth. 8 Stewardship Spotlight Stewardship is the recognition that all we have is a gift from God. It asks that we use our time, talent, and treasure to fulfill the depth of our commitment to St. Barnabas Parish. We rely on the generosity of our parishioners to fund our ministries and operations, and for this, we are grateful. Online giving is a great way to give to the Sunday Offertory! Currently, 144 parishioners give online up from 72 in November! Please consider using Give Central to donate to the Sunday Offertory via electronic check (ACH) or credit/debit card; make automatically repeating payments, or a one-time gift. If you already give online, please check your account to make sure your card is active and to update your giving amounts. Please visit our website, and click on the Give Central logo to set-up your donation in three easy steps: 1. Select your gift amount and designation 2. Log in to your account or create a new account 3. Enter payment method. Online giving saves our parish time and money in printing and mailing costs, and provides more reliable Sunday offertory income. Think about how important St. Barnabas Parish is to your family, and please give with a generous heart. Your support of St. Barnabas Parish is appreciated We are better together!
