2 Guest Mutterings Jesus gave this advice to his followers: Do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or drink or wear. But sadly, most of us can t seem to shake away our cares. In the United States, it is said that nearly 20% of the adult population suffers from an anxiety disorder, and it seems that most of us experience some recurring sense of anxiousness. All this worry and fret keeps us from focusing on positive, hopeful outcomes. In other words we re so busy worrying about what could go wrong that we lose sight of what is going right. PERHAPS Jesus is suggesting that, instead of expecting the worst, hope for the best. Here are some tips for leading a less anxious life: 1. Enjoy the moment. 2. Don t make decisions out of fear. 3. Give others the benefit of doubt; avoid judgments and blame. 4. Don t overanalyze yourself or others. 5. Don t start fights; work on ending those in progress. 6. When worries set in, pray. 7. Be grateful. 8. Let a smile be your default expression. 9. Allow life to unfold with little interference. 10. Follow the way of love. Patrice J. 4 Human Concerns PARISH MISSION COMING UP: LET S GET READY Fr. David Kelly of Precious Blood Ministry of Reconciliation (PBMR) will be speaking at our Parish Mission, March You may remember him from his powerful talk here last year at the Thou Shalt Not Murder event. Perhaps you would like to learn more about the Precious Blood Ministry before he challenges you to Return to God by Turning Toward Your Neighbor, our Mission Theme. One of their special gatherings is the First Sunday of the Month Liturgy. First Sunday of the Month Liturgy All are invited to join with others Sunday, March 5 th at 11:30 AM for PBMR Liturgy. This special Liturgy is a gathering of those who desire to join with others who strive to restore human dignity through hospitality, hope and healing. Lunch follows and all are welcome. The Liturgy is celebrated at Precious Blood Center 5114 S. Elizabeth Street in Chicago. There is a parking lot; enter door with red awning and sign Precious Blood Center. Spiritual Life LENTEN REGULATIONS Abstinence from meats is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. ST. PATRICK S MASS Saturday, March 11th 4:00 pm Irish Musical Preludes begin at 3:30 pm The annual St. Patrick s Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, March 11th at 4:00 pm. Irish prelude music will begin at 3:30 pm. Please plan to join us for this festive celebration in honor of St. Patrick! The liturgy will be followed by a soda bread reception in the church hall. 6 LENT SMALL GROUPS FORMING NOW! Companions on the Journey is a small group format program. As Chris ans, we are part of a community of believers who need others to support us along the way. Several families have graciously agreed to host a small group in their home once a week for the six weeks of Lent. We invite you to join a small group. Make a commitment to set aside just 90 minutes each week to grow in faith and in rela onship with your small group, our parish family. Small groups are being formed based on the informa on you provide. This means you can request a group based on shared experiences/lifestyle. You can also create your own group or choose a group based on your availability or me preferences. It is our hope that all of our parish family, the many different genera ons and the rich diversity of our parish, will come together to par cipate. 8 Faith Formation Parish Mission March 7pm in Church Returning To God and Turning Toward Our Neighbor The annual parish mission is a time of renewal of our relationship with God and each other. This year we are pleased to be joined by Fr. David A. Kelly, a Catholic priest of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood. He has worked for Kolbe House at Assumption, a parishbased jail ministry of the Archdiocese of Chicago since For more than thirty years, he has worked as a chaplain in Cook County Jail and Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center. He has had experience working in jails/prisons in Ohio and Florida. In 2002 Fr. Kelly, along with other members of his religious congregation, began the Precious Blood Ministry of Reconciliation (PBMR) to create a place and effort for those who have been impacted by violence and conflict. The Precious Blood Center of Reconciliation reaches out to the one who has been harmed, the one who has done harm, and the community. PBMR also strives to be a resource to other groups and communities who seek reconciliation. Last Call Sign Up By Monday, February 27 th! "Poverty calls us to sow hope." ~Pope Francis Over the past six years, St. Barnabas has helped build three homes for families in need of the dignity and safety that a home provides. I m excited to share that we will be building a house again this summer. This year, we are teaming with Christ the King for a Shared Parish Whole Family Mission Project. This will not only allow us to share the experience with a neighboring parish, but make the project more affordable too. Our parish will need to raise $5,000 to fund this project. Please consider making a financial contribution by placing an envelope marked House Build 2017 in the weekly collection basket. In addition to financially supporting the project, we very much hope you will join us in the building of the home. Advance registration is required online on the parish website.
