2 attendance and was on the North Side. Pastor Mutterings A FRIEND ONCE TOLD ME YOU NEVER GET A SECOND CHANCE TO MAKE A FIRST IMPRESSION. So I write my first column as your new pastor but not as a stranger. I've been hanging around here for nine years as I commuted like so many others downtown first to the Quigley Center and then to Michigan Avenue. My first assignment was the placement of priests throughout the archdiocese. I worked with my placement board some elected by their fellow priests and others appointed by the Cardinal. My term ended in I actually had a parish picked out. It had a big school with a bowling ally, large Sunday Obviously that did not happened. Unfortunately my predecessor in the Vicars office and good friend, Fr. John Colins, died suddenly. When Cardinal George asked if I would continue to minister to the priests of the archdiocese as their and his vicar, what else could I say but yes. He was in Rome at the time voting for our new pope. So my return to the North Side was delayed. That term was a four year commitment ending in As luck would have it Fr Malloy was retiring at the same time my term as Vicar was ending. My mission work on the South Side continues. I grew up on the Northwest Side of the city. My family attended Our Lady of Victory Parish and School, it is in the 16th police district and 45th ward. The east/west streets have such beautiful names like Sunnyside, Henderson, Windsor. My cousins from Bridgeport lived on 29th St or 34th place no imagination. I went to Loyola Academy in Wilmette. Unfortunately, Loyola did not have a school fight song like Leo's. However, I did receive a fine Jesuit education. I attended Northern Illinois University for 2 years and than entered Niles College. Survived those two years and went to St Mary of the Lake Seminary and was ordained in My first assignment was at St Anastasia in Waukegan. I was assigned to Our Lady of Ransom in Niles for 6 years. In 1999, I was appointed pastor of Our Lady of Loretto in Hometown. I have been on the South Side all of this century. Many mornings for the last nine years I would begin my day praying for the priests I ministered to and worked with. Every morning I surrounded my work with prayer. I would join the 6:45 people in the Holy Spirit Chapel. In the winter it was cold and dark yet full of light and warmth. In the summer we are greeted by the sun. Each day yet to be lived, each day full of potential to do good. Facing east we witnessed a new day coming into existence, light overcoming darkness. Truly a miracle. I invite all of us to look east to see a day full of untapped opportunities to serve the Lord. So, as we begin the newest chapter in the yet to be written book of St Barnabas Parish, let us look east to this new moment and be ready to see the miracles all around us. Administration FALL FEST - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! The annual Fall Family Festival has been scheduled for Saturday, September 23rd. The parish is seeking a Chair person and a committee of volunteers to help the Men s Club run the event. If you are interested in being on the committee, please contact Gail Byrnes at gbyrnes@stbarnabasparish.org.

3 ~ W I ~ In today s society, we are all so busy with the many aspects of our lives that, sometimes, we can become overwhelmed or disheartened when things don t always go exactly as anticipated. We d like to share with you some words of inspiration from Mother Teresa and hope that, after you read them, you will rejoice in what we have achieved to date through our Imagine. Innovate. Inspire. campaign and then enjoy a wonderful, peaceful and most blessed day. People are often unreasonable, irrational and self-centered. Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway. If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies. Succeed anyway. If you are honest and sincere, people may deceive you. Be honest and sincere anyway. What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight. Create anyway. If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. Be happy anyway. The good you do today will often be forgotten. Do good anyway. Give the best you have, and it may never be enough. Give your best anyway. In the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway. Thank you to the many men and women St. Barnabas leaders, volunteers and donors who have reached for success, been honest and sincere, used their time and talent to create opportunities to work together in His name, shared their happiness and goodness with their fellow parishioners, and realized that making the decision to support this special campaign has always been between them and God anyway! 5 Human Concerns SUCASA Hello and hope everyone is having a wonderful summer. SuCasa barbeque will be held on Sunday August 13th. We will be serving hamburgers, hotdogs, potato salad, oranges and cookies. The complete list of what is needed is below. Thank you everyone for your continued support and hope to see you in August. Thank you and God Bless you. Mary Condon Boxes of frozen hamburgers Hamburger Buns Hotdogs Hotdog buns Potato Salad Cans of Corn Oranges (naval oranges are the best) Cookies Kool Aid Divided Plates Plastic Silverware Cups Napkins BOOK DRIVE Mercy Sister Carol Mucha, former St. Barnabas principal, is conducting a used book sale at Saint Xavier University. Proceeds help students who cannot afford to go on retreats or do service trips to various places in the U.S. She counts heavily on the generosity of others who want to dispose of books of all genres, even CD's, DVD's, videos, magazines, and small electronics, including cell phones (they do not have to work). If you want to help, just bring the items over to McDonough Chapel, 3700 West 103rd Street, between 9am and 4pm. If you are unable to drop off we can pick up or if help is needed to unload, we can do that also. For more information, call Sister Carol at Gratefully, Sister Carol. HAVING A PARTY... for graduation, holidays, your block party, etc? The St. Barnabas Eccommittee can help make your event an ecologically green one. We provide containers for aluminum cans which we will distribute to you and collect. The revenue from these cans is used to purchase eco-friendly products for St. Barnabas events. We also provide paper cups and water coolers to avoid using bottled water. So much bottled water comes from 3rd world countries. People are dying there as we drink their water here. Please don't purchase or drink bottled water. Lives depend on your compassionate choice. You can call the rectory at or call WE ARE CALLED TO SERVE Have a free hour or afternoon? Share your gift of time this Lenten season by volunteering to help those in need. South Suburban and Southwest Chicago PADS, Warming Shelter at St. Barnabas, the Food Pantry at St. Galls, Feeding the Hungry in Robbins, and Visiting Residents at Evergreen Health Care are regularly scheduled activities. XAVIER UNIVERSITY HEALTH CENTER With the fun and relaxation that come from summer weather, it is easy to forget that kids can get sick; however, Saint Xavier University s (SXU) Health Center is already planning for the beginning of the school year with vaccinations for children. With preventable diseases such as pertussis (whopping cough) and measles resurfacing, it is important to protect children and keep them healthy with vaccines. Local families are welcome to receive their immunizations at the Health Center on SXU s Chicago campus, 3700 West 103rd Street. While same day appointments are available, reserving an appointment will reduce waiting time. Most health insurances cover the cost of preventative vaccines at 100 percent. For carriers that do not fully cover services, SXU s Health Center has the option of low, self-pay rates, with the acceptance of cash, credit or check.
