The St. Cecilia Young Adult Ministry has taken on the job of putting together a wonderful evening for our community. I want to invite everyone from the region to join us for this fun night. There will be a traditional German band playing the first part of the evening, and later in the night, we will have Easter Rising. Fr. Jacob used to be the drummer of this band. Hopefully we will get to hear him play! There will also be German food and beer, and St. Cecilia steins for sale. This year the young adults have also added cornhole, a lederhosen competition with prizes and a history of beer and beer productions presentation. We are indeed excited about hosting this event again and need, as always, the support of the parish to make it a success. Please come and bring your family and friends. We need volunteers to help clean up after the event. If you can help on Sunday morning, we would love to hear from you. On Saturday, October 6, at 10 AM, the Eastside region will commemorate the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, with the Blessing of Pets. Bring any pet, big or small to St. Cecilia. Fr. Jamie will ask God to bless them all. For the safety of both animals and people, pets should be on a leash or in a carrier. 4 PASTOR S R AMBLINGS TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY: I prayed a special prayer of blessing over my aunt and uncle, Helene and Joe Fondacaro (photo 1), for celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. 1 40TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY: Ron and Lorna Case (photo 2) celebrated their 40th Wedding Anniversary on Sept. 8 at the 9:00 Mass. I was glad I was able to pray a special blessing for them to celebrate 40 years of marriage. 1 WEDDING BELLS FOR STAFF MEM- BERS: Colleen Scheidel (photo 3, left), one of our St. Cecilia teachers for grades 6-8, is getting married on Sept. 29. Stephanie Gross (photo 3, right), our school office manager, is getting married on Oct 6. Congratulations on their engagements and future nuptials! 1 EXPECTING: Our 3rd-grade teacher, Jessica Wilcox (photo 4, right), and our kindergarten teacher, Laura Hathaway (photo 4, left), just found out that they are both expecting babies. We are so excited for them and will keep them in our prayers. St. Gerard, pray for us. 1 REST IN PEACE: A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated for Carol Smith (photo 5), a longtime parishioner of St. Anthony. She was very proud of her lineage as her great-great grandfather and father were baptized in St. Anthony Church. Charles Kelly s Mass of Christian Burial was Aug. 18 at St. Margaret-St. John Parish. Charles (photo 6) was a dedicated Boy Scout leader and member of the Knights of Columbus. Charles served in the United States Army during World War II and received a Victory Medal

5 NEW S & NOTES 5 40 Days for Life Kickoff Mark your calendars for Tuesday, September 25, at 7 PM and plan to join us for our Kickoff Rally for the Fall 40 Days for Life Campaign in front of Planned Parenthood, 2314 Auburn Avenue, Cincinnati, OH Our guest speaker and prayer leader will be Fr. Ryan Ruiz, Director of Liturgy and Assistant Professor of Liturgy and Sacraments at Mount Saint Mary s Seminary. Regional vigil prayer days are Thursday, Oct. 4, from 7 AM-6 PM, and Wednesday, Oct. 10, from 7 AM-6 PM. Urgent Need We have an urgent need for someone to take the 11-11:30 AM time slot on Wednesdays for at least the next two months to sit in church with the Good Lord in Eucharistic Adoration at St Cecilia. Due to illness in the family, our regular adorer will not be able to keep her commitment for awhile, and the Blessed Lord on the altar cannot be left unattended. St. Margaret-St. John Parish is hosting a welcome reception for Fr. Jacob Willig following the 10 AM Mass this Sunday, September 23. All are invited to attend. Save the Date! The annual St. Margaret St. John Turkey Dinner will be held on November 11, from 3-7 PM. MEAC The Madisonville Education and Assistance Center holds a free dinner for the Madisonville community every Monday evening. The Eastside Pastoral Region was assigned Monday, October 1, for our turn to host the dinner. Donations of specific food items are needed, as are volunteers to help with the preparing and serving of this dinner. Cincinnati s Catholic History A Four-Part Series Fr. David Endres, dean of the Athenaeum and professor of Church history, will explore the history of our archdiocese as we approach our bicentennial. His multimedia presentations will explain how Irish and German immigrants, despite persecution, transformed the city s Catholic presence, building an impressive network of churches, schools, and charities. He will discuss changes in the twentieth century, including the explosion of Catholic schools and the changes brought by the 1960s and Vatican II. The presentations will show how the Catholic history of our city still reverberates today. This week s RCIA lesson is ßßDIVINE REVELATION: How God Reveals Himself to Humanity This session will cover: Divine Revelation: why and how God reveals himself to us Jesus as the fulfillment of God s revelation The transmission of Divine Revelation through Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition The Magisterium as the authoritative interpreter of Scripture and Tradition Questions for the week: How does God reveal himself to the world? What is the relationship between Tradition and Scripture? In connection with revelation, what is the role of the magisterium (the teaching office of the Church)? What authority does it have relative to Scripture and Tradition? Catholic FAQs What is the problem with Sola Scriptura (Scripture Alone)? It is unbiblical: The belief that the Bible is the only source of Divine Revelation is not found in the Bible. Second Thessalonians 2:15 says that the followers of Christ hold fast to the traditions that were given to them, both orally and by written letter. It is unhistorical: For the first 1,500 years of Christianity, Christians understood that Sacred Tradition and the teaching authority of the Church went hand in hand with the Bible. It was only after the Protestant Reformation that sola scriptura emerged as a widespread belief among some groups of Christians. It is unworkable: The Bible was never written to be a stand-alone teacher. Without the authority of the Church, everyone interprets the Bible his or her own way. This is one of the reasons that there are more than 30,000 Christian denominations. Register your 7th-8th Grader for Confirmation Preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation will begin on October 7. All students wanting to be confirmed this year need to register for the newly created Confirmation Preparation Program. 7 THE LAST PAGE 7 Our Forty Hours Exposition and Adoration weekend was a truly inspiring time of devoted prayer and celebration for the parish. A good number of people stayed after the 10 AM Mass and closing ceremony for our brunch reception, which was a wonderful time of shared fellowship and food. Special thanks to all who volunteered as guardian adorers for assigned times throughout the weekend especially those who came in the overnight hours! Sincere thanks, as well, to all the other volunteers and participants who worked to make the opening and closing ceremonies such special, meaningful celebrations. If you didn t get to join us for this exceptional weekend this year, mark your calendars for the second weekend in September next year. You will find it to be a time of incomparable spiritual value and reward. Contact Bob Kellison at , ext Holy Name Procession All Catholic men are invited to stand together and participate in the Men s Holy Name Society Eucharistic Procession in Downtown Cincinnati on Oct. 13. Once an annual event drawing tens of thousands of men, this solemn Eucharistic procession through the streets was revived four years ago by the St. Antoninus Parish Holy Name Society, and continues to grow each year. The procession will be led by Father Jon- Paul Bevak and will stop several times for prayer. It begins at 9 AM at the Cathedral of St. Peter in Chains (come early for 8 AM Mass, celebrated by Father Jacob Willig) and will conclude by 11 AM at Old St. Mary s Church. Come alone, with a friend, with your father or son or brother, or with men from your parish. Join us after the 10 AM Mass on Oct. 14 for Doughnut Sunday. Bring friends and family to Mass and then come down to the Commons for fellowship, doughnuts and coffee. It s a great place to meet other parishioners!
