God gave us this life; it is a gift, and it has an ultimate destiny. That destiny is oneness with God, both now in this time and space and in eternity in heaven. Oneness with God first begins with prayer, the intimate union that occurs when we set aside time to be with our Lord and open ourselves up to him. Prayer can be a one-to-one dialogue, or it can be in union with others, even the whole Church. I especially believe prayer between spouses and families is an extremely important practice that not only keeps Christ first in the family but also binds a family together in ways that human power alone cannot. The most important prayer of the family and for every individual is the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Mass is a coming together of the Christian family that uniquely unites us to God by Word, Sacrament, his priesthood and truth. It is a prayer that we need every week to create deeper conversion of our hearts so that we respect the lives God has given us. And while you need the Mass, the whole body of the congregation needs your presence. We are less without anyone who chooses not to unite himself to God and to others. As we continue to grow as followers of Christ, may we each respect our lives by engaging in one of the most important activities we can as human beings prayer. Amen? Amen! Our next Young Adult Mass & Brunch is this Sunday, Oct. 7. Join us for 10 AM Mass at St. Cecilia followed by a potluck brunch at CooKoo s coffee shop at 4901 Whetzel Avenue in Madisonville. And we will celebrate our next Candlelight Mass on Oct. 11 at 7 PM at St. Cecilia church. MARRIAGE BANNS of SAINT CECILIA III Ivan Wilson & Rose Mankiewicz I Chris Eisenacher & Kara Magoteaux

4 pa s t o r s r a m b l i n g s 4 Townhouse Plan: The demolition of the old 5/3 building that was located next to St. Cecilia has been completed. Now 19 townhouses will be built over the course of the next year. This direction taken by the developers is dramatically different than the initial plan of a large apartment complex (photos 1, 2). I wish to thank all those who went to the Community Council meetings, as well as all those who went to the hearings downtown with the City Planning Office. I believe the churches and neighborhood s voices about the project were heard. 1 Congratulations! Emily Hertel and Michael Magyar (photo 3) celebrated the Sacrament of Marriage on Sept. 22. Fr. Kemper presided over their wedding. 1 Turkey Dinner: Save the date for the annual Turkey Dinner at St. Margaret-St. John Parish. The Turkey Dinner will be Sunday, Nov. 11, from 4-7 PM. The Turkey Dinner has been served annually for over 60 years. Please come and enjoy the dinner while supporting the parish. 1 Welcome to the New Guys! St. Margaret-St. John Parish hosted a reception to welcome Fr. Jacob Willig and our pastoral intern Louie Jacquemin following the 10 AM Mass on Sunday, Sept. 23 (photo 4). Thank you to everyone who helped put together the reception, especially Amber Losekamp and her family for all the homemade treats they made to celebrate the occasion. 1 Welcome, Children of God: Two children were baptized Sept. 23. Please lift up and pray for Addison Mae, son of Gregory and Anne Erpenbeck (photo 5), and Bianca Daniela, daughter of Gumercildo and Mayra Lopez Garcia (photo 6). 1 Rest in Peace: Alice Wood (photo 7), longtime parishioner of St. Margaret-St. John, had a Mass of Christian Burial on Sept. 19. Margaret House (photo 8), mother of Tom and Jim House, passed away on Sept. 11. Her Mass of Christian Burial was Sept. 22 at St. Margaret-St. John

5 news & notes 5 Annual St. Margaret-St. John Turkey Dinner Volunteers Needed! Please join us on Nov. 10, anytime from 8 AM until noon, to help set up and cook the dinner for our annual Turkey Dinner on Nov. 11. It s a wonderful way to meet people spending the morning talking and laughing while... peeling potatoes, getting cranberry sauce ready, setting up the cafeteria and other tasks for making this delicious dinner happen. We need many hands to make the work load lighter. Please contact Mary Mathers with any questions at marymathers@fuse.net or The Penalty On Tuesday, Oct. 9, at 7 PM in the St. Anthony parish center, the St. Anthony Peace & Justice Committee invites everyone to a unique opportunity to view a powerful documentary called The Penalty. This film, which is not yet available to the general public, tracks three stories of individuals involved in the death penalty the family of a murder victim in Florida, a man wrongly convicted and sentenced to death in Louisiana, and a public defender in Ohio. All are welcome to join us for the film and a discussion afterwards. Holy Name Procession All Catholic men are invited to stand together and participate in the Men s Holy Name Society Eucharistic Procession in Downtown Cincinnati on Oct. 13. Once an annual event drawing tens of thousands of men, this solemn Eucharistic procession was revived four years ago by the St. Antoninus Parish Holy Name Society, and continues to grow each year. The procession will be led by Father Jon-Paul Bevak. It begins at 9 AM at the Cathedral of St. Peter in Chains (come early for 8 AM Mass, celebrated by Father Jacob Willig) and will conclude by 11 AM at Old St. Mary s Church. Join us after the 10 AM Mass on Oct. 14 for Doughnut Sunday at St. Cecilia. Bring friends and family to Mass and then come down to the Commons for doughnuts and coffee. It s a great place to meet parishioners and catch up with friends. Stewardship The word steward or stewardship is found 87 times in the New Testament. The New Testament writers use the words steward and stewardship to make a point that all people are God s stewards, because everything that exists belongs to God. The good steward puts God first, nurtures loving relationships with family and friends, cares for one s health, establishes a good balance between work and leisure, and so much more. These are all aspects of living a lifestyle of stewardship as children of God. If I truly am a daughter or son of God, then all people on earth are my brothers and sisters. If I truly am a daughter or son of God, then everything I have comes from God. If I truly am a daughter or son of God, then God and I are in this together. That s why stewardship is not optional for a follower of Christ. Stewardship is not about money. It s a whole way of life based on the belief that we truly are daughters and sons of God. Living as stewards means that we care for and nurture all that we have been given: our very selves, our relationships, our material resources, every hour of every day we are alive. When that nurturing yields with increase, we find abundance overflowing: our relationships flow out to draw others in; our material resources are shared willingly and with love; our care of ourselves gives us physical and emotional energy with which to be productive. Recognizing God as the Giver of every good gift and being mindful of our blessings each day changes our prayer life with God. We truly embody the Eucharist (the very word means to give thanks). Coming to Mass aware of all we have to be thankful for opens our minds and hearts to the fullness of God s presence with us. As good stewards and children of God, we become aware of our many blessings, the greatest of which is Christ s gift of new life and union with God, poured out in sacred word and sacrament around the Eucharistic table. 6 Eastside Faith 6 RCIA THIS WEEK Please pray for all of those journeying to full Communion with the Catholic Church! This week s RCIA lesson is THE STORY OF SALVATION: Creation, Fall, and Redemption This session will cover: The three major parts in the story of salvation: Creation, Fall, and Redemption How originally we were united with God and experienced harmony within the human family How sin broke our unity and left us with an inclination toward sin, called concupiscence How Jesus came to restore us to the Father, but also to establish the Catholic Church to gather the broken family of humanity into the united family of God Questions for the week: Consistent throughout salvation history are covenants. How does entering into a covenant define the relationship between God and his people? What is original sin? What result or effect does it have on us? Do you think that salvation history as presented in the Bible is over? How are our own lives a part of God s divine plan for the world? To study along with us, please log onto Formed.org (parish code YX2P22), program = Symbolon: Knowing the Faith ~ Session 4. I am the light of the world. John 8:12 Catholic FAQs According to Catholic teaching, as a result of Original Sin, human nature is wounded in the natural powers proper to it, subject to ignorance, suffering, and the dominion of death, and inclined to sin. Catholics also believe that through the graces of the sacrament of Baptism, Original Sin is removed and we are filled with God s life, but concupiscence, the tendency toward sin, remains throughout life. As the Catechism states: Baptism, by imparting the life of Christ s grace, erases original sin and turns a person back toward God, but the consequences for nature, weakened and inclined to evil, persist in humanity and summon him to spiritual battle (CCC 405). Offertory Gift Bearers at St. Cecilia We have started our new system for selecting the gift bearers at all the weekend Masses at St. Cecilia. Before Mass, there will be a crucifix on the table with the gifts in the center aisle. If your family, or you and a friend, would like to present the gifts at the offertory, please pick up the crucifix before Mass begins. That will let the sacristans know that someone is committed to bringing up the gifts. If you are bringing up the gifts, please approach the gift table once the offertory hymn is introduced. Place the crucifix back on the table, and then wait there until the priest heads down from the sanctuary. Then take the gifts to the priest at the head of the aisle, bow, and return to your pew. We hope that this new system will make it possible for a variety of people to assist at this part of the Mass. Deacons: Ministers of Service (part 8 of 10) Deacons at Mass The Introductory Rite: Vested in a white alb, cincture, stole (a priest stole goes over both shoulders, a deacon s stole is worn over the left shoulder) and dalmatic, the deacon usually processes in front of the priest carrying the book of the Gospels. His dalmatic is usually the same color and style of the priest s chasuble, but has closed sleeves. If the book of the Gospels is not processed, the deacon walks to the right of the priest. Upon reaching the altar, the deacon reverences the altar with a kiss along with the priest. He can also lead the people in the penitential rite. The deacon s role at the liturgy of the word follows in part 8 of 10 of this series. Nathan Beiersdorfer is in formation to be ordained a permanent deacon for our region. Register Your 7th-8th Grader for Confirmation Preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation will begin on this weekend, on Sunday, October 7. All students wanting to be confirmed this year need to register for the newly created Confirmation Preparation Program. To read more about the new preparation process and to register your child for Confirmation, visit ALL students, regardless if they attend St. Cecilia School or not, need to register for the preparation program at the website listed above. Contact Cody Egner, cegner@eastsideregion.org, with any questions. 40 Days for Life Vigil Prayer. 7 focus on Justice 7 Laudato si, mi Signore Praise be to you, my Lord. In the words of this beautiful canticle, Saint Francis of Assisi reminds us that our common home is like a sister with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us. Praise be to you, my Lord, through our Sister, Mother Earth, who sustains and governs us, and who produces various fruit with coloured flowers and herbs. Pope Francis, Laudato si : On Care for Our Common Home St. Francis Pledge October s St. Francis Feast day prompts us once again to reflect on how we care for the earth. St. Francis s love and care for creation challenges us today, as we begin to see the grave effects of climate change. Mindful of those who are already directly suffering from fires and floods, and aware of the need to protect the earth for those who succeed us, let us be firm in our response to this sign of the times. Take the St. Francis pledge to pray, live, and advocate Laudato si. Visit for more info. Living the St. Francis Pledge Turn down your water heater. 120 degrees is usually hot enough. Wrap your water heater in an insulating jacket if the water heater is over 5 years old or has no internal insulation. Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off day is every Thursday, 1-7 PM, through Nov. 15, at Environmental Enterprises, Inc. located at 4600 Spring Grove Avenue. Rethinking Racism: The People vs. Columbus The People vs. Columbus offers an opportunity to examine the story of Columbus, his crew, the Taino people, Ferdinand and Isabella and the system of empire in the light of historical data that has not been widely available in history books. The event will take place at St. John Unitarian Church, 320 Resor Ave., 45220, October 8, from 6:30 to 9 PM. Reservations (on eventbrite) are required as space is limited. A Note from the St. Anthony Director of Music I hope that everyone is settling into the fall school rhythm. This year the children s choir will work on two songs: We have a wonderful arrangement of a Polish Carol, Shepherds Run Along. Children will also sing Star Carol with the adult choir, just as they did last year. Rehearsals will be on the dates below from 6:30-7 PM. November 7, 14, 28, and December 5, 12, 19. I will have some healthy snacks available in the back as I know that families are very busy. In addition to these Wednesday night rehearsals, I will review the music with them on Sunday mornings after their regular religious education classes. Dec. 19 will be a mandatory dress rehearsal for Christmas. Thanks so much for all that you do for the St. Anthony community. We are looking forward to a blessed Christmas season! Peace and harmony! Michelle Markert, Director of Music, St. Anthony Church michellemarkert@stanthonychurch.net, Story Corps, St. Anthony Style Come together with others to remember the greatest church in Madisonville, St. Anthony! A committee of volunteers would like to hear from you and video record your experience of St. Anthony. On October 14, video cameras and interviewers will be set up in the side room of the rectory between Masses to record what you have to share about the past and recent past of the church. The stories will be compiled into a final video to capture the spirit of St. Anthony parish. What s your St. Anthony story? We d love to hear it.
