3 JANUARY 28-29, 2017 THE PASTOR S CORNER The Beatitudes This Sunday after the 10:00 Mass, we will have our school open house. Our students have been diligently learning about their faith as well as working on their academic courses. Our students participate in different acts of charity and mercy throughout the year. They are taught the Beatitudes at Mass and in their classrooms and incorporate ways of living them in their daily lives. In today s Gospel, Jesus calls blessed those who are poor, hungry, merciful, and peacemaking (Mt 5:1-12A). The Beatitudes challenge all of us to consider how we, too, can be blessed. Be sure to find us today at A GOSPEL REFLECTION MATTHEW 5:1-12 by FATHER JASON WILLIAMS Blessed are the poor in spirit, for the kingdom of God is theirs. Our Lord has been baptized by John in the Jordan, he s begun to form his band of disciples, and so now he ushers in his teaching ministry to the people of Israel and to us. Today he once again invites us to life in abundance, seeking to live according to God s ways and not the ways of the world. When taken together with the first reading and the responsorial psalm, it becomes clear that the Church is giving us this opportunity to renew our commitment to being disciples who are above all poor in spirit. But what does that mean? Poverty of spirit is the foundational attitude of the disciple. We are poor in spirit when we recognize and live by the fact that God has given us absolutely everything. First and foremost, he has blessed us with the gift of life. At baptism he infused his great virtues of faith, hope, and charity his own divine life into our souls. Through the desire of his Fatherly love for us, he has called us to be members of his Church, the spotless Bride of Christ, by whose sacraments we are strengthened in grace. With constant care he sustains us and provides for our needs, seeing that all things work towards the ultimate good of our salvation. All is from God, even the grace to bear the crosses he entrusts to us. Aware of this truth, the disciple who is poor in spirit lives in complete dependence on the grace of God rather than on the futility of one s own efforts. The poor in spirit build on the bedrock of humility, striving to conform their hearts more and more to the will of God. The poor in spirit live rejoicing, because the kingdom of heaven where all is in perfect harmony with the loving will of God is theirs. 3

4 SAINT CECILIA ROMAN CATHOLIC PARISH A C LOS ER LOOK AT OU R FAITH Catechesis: Why Does the Faith Require Definitions and Formulas? Faith is not about empty words but about reality. In the Church, condensed formulas of faith developed over the course of time; with their help we can contemplate, express, learn, hand on, celebrate, and live out this reality. [ ] Without fixed forms, the content of the faith would dissipate. That is why the Church attaches great importance to definite sentences, the precise wording of which was usually achieved painstakingly, so as to protect the message of Christ from misunderstandings and falsifications. Furthermore, creeds are important when the Church s faith has to be translated into different cultures while being preserved in its essentials, because a common faith is the foundation for the Church s unity. (YOUCAT question 25) Liturgical Facts: Understanding the Mass Part 1: Jesus Loves You. The goal of this series of brief reflections is to help us grow in our understanding of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Before we can talk about the Mass, we need to be aware of a few basic principles, and then build on these to increase our knowledge of the Mass in addition to its purpose and goals. Like a house built on rock, these beginning articles will focus on basic principles forming a solid foundation upon which we will build our house of understanding. The first topic will be the Sacraments. Jesus loves us. His love was evident when he died on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins. After his death but before his bodily ascension into Heaven, He wanted to leave behind a way for all of us to interact with Him; a way each of us could have a personal encounter with Him as the living, risen Lord. He did this by first creating the Church on earth as His Body, then entrusting to it the seven Sacraments, which He instituted as the most powerful method of having our own personal encounter with Him. There are many ways of having a personal encounter with Jesus, but the deepest personal encounters come only through the seven Sacraments. The next article will delve a little deeper into the definition of a Sacrament and how Jesus is made present through them. Cody Egner 4 Know Your Saints Saint Francis de Sales, the eldest of 13 children, was born into a family of nobility in France in His father sent him to study at the University of Paris. After six years, Francis was intellectually competent in many areas. Francis was also a skilled swordsman who enjoyed fencing, an expert horseman, and a superb dancer. Then Francis studied at the University of Padua and received a doctorate in civil and canon law. His father wanted him to marry, but Francis desired to be a priest. His father consented, and Francis was ordained to the priesthood in When Francis was appointed bishop of Geneva, he not only wrote for and encouraged priests, but he also took an interest in the candidates for priesthood. Francis even conducted the examinations to see if the candidates were fit for this vocation. He also trained laypeople to teach catechism. Francis often gave spiritual guidance to people. In 1610, Francis helped Jane Frances de Chantal found the Visitation convent. He wrote a book called The Introduction to the Devout Life. It shows that everyone can grow in holiness. Among his other writings is the Treatise on the Love of God, a history of his own love for God. Francis was declared a Doctor of the Church and the patron of journalists and writers. The Quote of the Week Let the Creed be like a mirror for you. Look at yourself in it to see whether you really believe all that you claim to believe. And rejoice every day in your faith. 5 JANUARY 28-29, 2017 PAS TOR S RAMBLINGS Blessing of Expectant Mothers at Spanish Mass: Fr. Jason blessed the expectant mothers at our Spanish Mass (photo, left). It was a pleasant surprise for one of our servers whose mother came forward for a blessing. This was the way she surprised her family with the announcement. 1 Bingo: Fr. Jason and I went to the bingo night at St. Margaret-St. John last Thursday (photo, above) and really enjoyed the large crowd that attends. If you re ever looking to volunteer or enjoy a game of bingo, this is a really fun event. 1 MLK Breakfast: As part of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I went to a special breakfast at the Freedom Center (photo, above right). It was a very nice presentation and breakfast. It inspired me to plan a field trip down to the Freedom Center in the future. 1 Congratulations! A couple weeks ago, we had a marriage convalidated at the 10:00 Mass. Zachary and Andrea Philpot (photo, right) had their marriage blessed during Mass. Catholics are bound to observe a certain form of marriage ritual in order that their marriage be valid. Canon law the law of the Church requires that Catholics enter into marriage by free mutual consent that is witnessed in a church by an authorized bishop, priest, or deacon and at least two other witnesses. The Church very much wants to assist couples who want to enter into valid Catholic marriages, and it offers them pastoral and spiritual support as they need it. When these couples are ready and free to do so, they celebrate what is called a convalidation, from the Latin word meaning to firm up or to strengthen. This is sometimes referred to as the blessing of a marriage. I m so glad that many people were there to congratulate Zachary and Andrea and that our parishioners enjoyed the wedding. Donut Sunday: Every second Sunday of the month, we host a donut Sunday in our commons. It s always nice to see our parish family get together after Mass. If you haven t been down there, plan on staying after Mass one Sunday to join us! 5

6 SAINT CECILIA ROMAN CATHOLIC PARISH Lions A T H L E T I C S PARIS H NEWS & NOTES Baseball Registration Baseball/softball registration for parishoners wanting to play this spring will take place during Catholic Schools Week Open House this Sunday, Jan. 29, from 11 AM-1 PM in the school. Athletic Director Matt Weisenborn will have sign-ups in room 3, on the second floor in the upper-grade wing. Registration fee is $60, with checks payable to St. Cecilia School. Catholic Charities Volunteers are needed to work with adults with four years of schooling or less who are learning English. You would help students to learn English vocabulary and communication skills. Duties include helping teach basic critical thinking skills, reading, writing and numeracy (arithmetic). There are three levels of ESOL that volunteers could teach; level 1 being primarily for clients with no English background, and limited literacy. Volunteers must be Virtus trained. We hope to see you there! Dresser Project 2017 For quite a number of years, our parish has generously contributed to a dresser project. Through this project, we collect baby items that will be donated, through Pregnancy Center East, to a mother who has made the choice of life for her unborn child. Many parishioners find this to be a very positive way to express their support for the pro-life movement. This year s dresser can be found in the vestibule with a list of suggested items. We are collecting baby items from January 21 through February 19. Your participation is welcome and appreciated! Catholic Men s Conference Join nearly three thousand of your closest brothers in Christ on Feb. 25 as we hear from some of the most dynamic speakers around the country about our call to battle. The 2017 Columbus Catholic Men s Conference is sure to be a life-changing experience unlike any other. This is the perfect opportunity to strengthen your faith and engage in fellowship. From the St. Vincent de Paul Corner A heartfelt thank-you for your support last year for our St. Vincent de Paul chapter! You gave $24,561 in donations. Over the holidays alone, we received $3,000 in cash, clothing and toys and another $2,500 in food items from the Giving Tree, Food from the Heart and the Thanksgiving Day Mass. We spent $24,888, which covered rents of $8,522, utilities of $8,530, and $7,836 for other vital items, including beds and other special support. We assisted over 326 people. We volunteered 844 hours, which included 183 home visits that we did before issuing assistance, and we made 203 visits to two are rest homes, along with distributing copies of Our Sunday Visitor, The Catholic Telegraph and other donated religious reading material. Please mark your calendars for Saturday, April 22, and Sunday, April 23, for BUNDLE SUNDAY. We will have a St. Vincent de Paul truck in the church parking lot where we will accept gently worn clothing before and after the Masses. It is not too early to start that spring cleaning and clean out your closets. We appreciate you and your efforts! There is a lot of good we do together to help people over a hurtle in life. We count on your support to help our area residents in need. When you give, it comes back tenfold and it starts with love. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to the generous hearts of yours!
