2 TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY in ORDINARY TIME The Pastor s Corner Stewardship of Prayer It seems that in today s world, the prevalent thought is (to borrow from a song) It s my life and I ll do what I want ; however, as Christians, one of the important truths we need to understand is that the life each of us has been given is not ours to do with as we will. God gave us this life; it is a gift, and it has an ultimate destiny. That destiny is oneness with God, both now in this time and space and in eternity in heaven. Oneness with God first begins with prayer, the intimate union that occurs when we set aside time to be with our Lord and open ourselves up to him. Prayer can be a one-to-one dialogue, or it can be in union with others, even the whole Church. I especially believe prayer between spouses and families is an extremely important practice that not only keeps Christ first in the family but also binds a family together in ways that human power alone cannot. The most important prayer of the family and for every individual is the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Mass is a coming together of the Christian family that uniquely unites us to God by Word, Sacrament, his priesthood and truth. It is a prayer that we need every week to create deeper conversion of our hearts so that we respect the lives God has given us. And while you need the Mass, the whole body of the congregation needs your presence. We are less without anyone who chooses not to unite himself to God and to others. As we continue to grow as followers of Christ, may we each respect our lives by engaging in one of the most important activities we can as human beings--prayer. Amen? Amen! The Annual SMSJ Turkey Dinner will be held Sunday, November 12, 2017, from 3pm to 7pm. Cost is $9 for adults and $5 for children. Dinner includes homemade mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberries, green beans, drinks, and desserts. We need your help to bake turkey, prepare side items, set-up the cafeteria, serve food, and clean-up. 4 EASTSIDE FAITH Credo (I Believe) Did Jesus have a soul, a mind, and a body just as we do? Yes. Jesus worked with human hands, He thought with a human mind. He acted with a human will, and with a human heart He loved. (Second Vatican Council, GS 22, 2) The humanity of Jesus is complete and includes the fact that Jesus possessed a soul and developed psychologically and spiritually. In this soul dwelled His human identity and His special self-consciousness. Jesus knew about His unity with His heavenly Father in the Holy Spirit, by whom He allowed Himself to be guided in every situation of His life. Jesus draws on the image of God s vineyard described by the prophet Isaiah, revealing to the Pharisees that they have failed to care for the people under their spiritual care, the house of Israel. It s not difficult to imagine how angry this must have made them. It s equally easy to judge them in their negligence and think that we would not have been so foolish if such a thing were entrusted to us. The landowner, who represents God the Father, is not naïve when he says that the workers will respect his son. He knows full well what could happen, but he sends him nonetheless. His words describe how the servants ought to act when the son arrives. God the Father sent us his Son, saying the same thing: They will respect my Son. We know how the story unfolds. He was not respected, yet the story does not end at death. Through love, death becomes the source of life. Jesus changes everything, and, recognizing that, we are given another opportunity to do what the Father first hoped we would. In forgiving our sins God offers us the opportunity to live again in the perfection of his goodness. He wants us to bear rich, choice fruit that will be a blessing for all the world, fruit that will last into eternity. While we were still sinners, God loved us, and sent his only Son to be our Savior. RCIA THIS WEEK Please pray for all of those journeying to full Communion with the Catholic Church! This week s (October 11) RCIA lesson is Who is Jesus? Who is Jesus? People have been asking that question for 2,000 years. Today, most would agree that Jesus was a historical figure, a first-century Jew who was crucified by the Romans in the city of Jerusalem. Many would even agree that He offered some good moral teachings. However, the idea that Jesus could actually be God is as controversial now as it was in His own time. However, that is exactly what Christians profess in the Creed I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father. For Christians, the answer to the question of Jesus identity is simple: He is God, come to live with us. Questions for the week: Who is Jesus to you? How does the world and contemporary culture respond to that same question? What do you think it means for Jesus, the divine Son of God, to be truly and fully human? Can you imagine Jesus being tired, hungry, or angry? How does seeing Jesus as having all the same feelings and experiences you have (except for sin) change the way you tell Him your needs and desires in prayer? Courage Courage, an international apostolate of the Catholic Church that ministers to persons with same-sex attractions, will be holding a retreat on October 28 at Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Center from 9 AM to 3 PM. The retreat is open to Courage and EnCourage members and others who are supportive of Courage s ministry. There will be time for reflection, talks, discussion, Mass, and Confession. 7 + HAPPENINGS + SAINT MARGARET - SAINT JOHN PARISH SMSJ Adult Ministry Luncheon Recently the SMSJ Adult Ministry Group hosted lunch at Ron s Roost on the West Side of town. The group has several events each month: a luncheon, a presentation, and card games and bingo. These great opportunities for fellowship and growing in the faith are open to those over fifty. We hope to see you at some of our upcoming events. Bring a friend! Coat Drive The Free Store Food Bank of Cincinnati is organizing a coat drive to collect and distribute genltly used winter coats for those in need right here in our area. Please consider donating a coat if you are looking to replace it this year. Donations will be accepted at the Free Store Food Bank center at 112 East Liberty Street downtown, on October 28, from 10am until 2pm. Thanks for your generosity. Eternal Rest Grant Unto Them Please pray for the repose of the souls of Neil Wittberg (top) and Gary Miller (bottom). Father Paul Ruwe celebrated the Mass of Christian Burial for Neil on Tuesday, September 26, and Father Jason celebrated a memorial Mass for Gary on Saturday, September 30. Please pray for their families and friends as well. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. Baseball Field Clean-up Day We are organizing a clean-up day to continue the improvements of our parish baseball field. We will gather on Sunday morning, October 29, at 10am and would love to have as many hands as possible to make the work load more managable. If you have any of the following tools, bring them along, they ll get put to good use: weedeaters, shovels, chainsaws, loppers, trucks and trailers. Cleaning-up the field will result in a great space for so many young people of our parish and region and neighborhood to enjoy for years to come. Please come and lend a hand! 40 Days for Life Campaign The 40 Days for Life Fall campaign runs through November 5th. This campaign draws attention to the evil of abortion through prayer, fasting, constant vigil and community outreach, with the goal of turning hearts and minds towards a culture of life. All ages, young and old, are welcome to join in this concert of prayer for healing and love. For more info check out 40daysforlife.com. Priests are available for confession every weekday at SMSJ following the 11:45AM Mass and one hour before each Sunday Mass.
