He lives his life in service to Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary, in perfect conformity to the will of God. Therefore, it is appropriate that we ask St. Joseph to pray for us, so that we, too, may live the lives that God wills us to live. Dear St. Joseph, accept the offering I make to you. Be my father, protector, and guide in the way of salvation. Obtain for me purity of heart and a love for the spiritual life. After your example, let all my actions be directed to the greater glory of God, in union with the Divine Heart of Jesus, the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and your own paternal heart. But He is always there to guide and help us, and He has given us other people and resources to help us, as well. If you think God may be calling you to religious life and you need someone to talk to, call Fr. Dan Schmitmeyer at , ext We have confessions every weekday at St. Cecilia following the 9 AM Mass. Confession heals, confession justifies, confession grants pardon of sin, all hope consists in confession; in confession there is a chance for mercy. -St. Isidore of Seville Every Friday during Lent, we will pray the STATIONS OF THE CROSS at 9:30 AM and 7 PM in the church. Consider making this devotion part of your Lenten commitment to prayer and to growing closer to Christ.

4 EASTSIDE FAITH 4 Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. 1 Peter 4:8 A Gospel Reflection by Father Jason Williams JOHN 2 :13-25 Jesus knew them all. At the end of the passage of the cleansing of the Temple, we hear that Jesus knew human nature very well. Throughout the rest of John s Gospel, we witness Jesus encountering various people and how, knowing them and their situations, he offers them the truth of the Gospel and the hope of eternal life. We could even say that it is because he knows us, and loves us, that he is willing to die for us, so that we may share in his Resurrection. He knows what is truly best for us. If we think about Jesus speaking with Nicodemus of the need to be born of the Spirit, or when he meets the Samaritan woman at the well and challenges her to worship God in both spirit and truth, we can learn how great Jesus love is for each person he meets, for each of us. And that love is powerful: it accepts people as they are yet moves them towards their greatest potential as sons and daughters of God; it forgives and then calls us to turn away from sin and believe in him; it heals and offers the plan to remain free from the devastating powers of evil. It is encouraging believing that Jesus knows me very well. He knows what I need before I even ask him for it. He knows what ails me and what good things he hopes to accomplish through my life. How good it is to spend this Lent striving to know God s love for me. The more I am aware of being loved perfectly, the more I am able to respond in love. Credo (I Believe) The Season of Lent, Part I We began the Lenten season on Ash Wednesday, February 14. While many look forward to this time for opportunities for spiritual growth and renewal, quite often many of us see it as a liturgical season to dread. We focus on What am I going to give up? How long can I live without whatever it is I am going to give up? How many more days before I don t have to give up whatever it is that I am giving up? Who wouldn t dread a liturgical season with such a narrow focus? Over these next few weeks, we are all encouraged to begin reflecting anew on the real purpose of Lent, the power such a season can be for us, and the real potential for a deeper commitment to our Catholic faith, and most important, a deeper communion of love with God. Such a deeper understanding could give us a new attitude for Lent. Baptism is one of Lent s foundational focuses. At the Easter Vigil, the catechumens (referred to as the elect ) will be fully initiated as Catholics through the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. It is no coincidence that on Easter Sunday, all the baptized will renew our baptismal promises. Note that I said we are going to renew our baptismal promises and not merely repeat them. Repeating simply recalls something that happened in the past. Renew is entirely different. Renewing our baptismal promises recognizes something still foundational in our life. Renewing our baptismal promises opens our hearts to God s grace. Grace reveals God s great love for us and God s purpose for our life. This great divine love energizes our own love and leads us to a deeper commitment to live these promises more faithfully. Easter is one time in the liturgical year for us to remember that we are baptized once for a lifetime and not merely once in a lifetime. Lent is the time set aside to prepare us to make that renewal faithfully. Our world, our country, and our Church all need us to rediscover the beauty and power of baptism and our call to be co-redeemers with the Lord Jesus Christ. Our baptism calls us to a life of holiness that reveals Jesus great and merciful love to all humanity and all creation. Our faith also commits us to restoring the human community and all creation to a life of justice, peace, and solidarity. Fr. Jason Williams will be the third speaker in our Young Adult series on Wed., Mar. 7, at 8 PM at the Cellar at Oakley Wines (4011 Allston St.). His topic will be: The Precepts of the Church: 21st Century Edition. Fr. Jason served in the U.S. Navy as a nuclear reactor operator on a fastattack submarine (U.S.S. Hartford), which is where he realized his vocation to the priesthood. Fr. Jason s interests include hiking, photography, canoeing, hunting giant squid (long story), and music (piano, organ, and violin). Fun fact: he s often mistaken by St. Cecilia kindergarteners for Jesus himself.

I feel a sense of peace and connection when I attend Mass. I am especially drawn to the rituals, the history, and the universality of Catholicism. Marriage Annulments The Catholic Church dedicates much time and effort to prepare couples for marriage. However, despite the couples best efforts, unfortunately a marriage union sometimes fails to reach fulfillment for both parties and may end in a civil divorce. The Catholic Church has mechanisms and processes in place to assist people in these situations, especially if they anticipate another marriage. If you find yourself in this circumstance, we would like to help. The Our Lady of Fatima Prayer Group invites you to pray the rosary for peace throughout our world with them every Wednesday from 1 2 PM in the last two pews of St. Cecilia church. Fast and Abstinence Guidelines for Lent Persons ages are to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. When fasting, you are allowed one full meal a day. Two other light meals are permitted, but eating between meals is not permitted. Liquids are allowed at any time. Persons ages 14 and up are to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all Fridays of Lent. Oakley Food Pantry The pantry is always in need of food and household items. You can drop off donations at any of the St. Cecilia church doors or in the vestibule during the day or on Tuesdays from AM at the pantry at the United Church of Christ at 4100 Taylor Avenue directly across the street from the school. Whatever you can give would be greatly appreciated. March Papal Prayer Intentions Pope Francis asks Catholics to pray that the Church may appreciate the urgency of formation in spiritual discernment, both on the personal and communitarian levels. Ruah Woods Ruah Woods Psychological Services (RWPS) seeks to integrate the best of psychological science and the truths of the Catholic faith empowering people to more fully embrace and live out their vocation to love according to God s plan. I am thankful for all of those who helped and participated, especially Matt Weisenborn, who helped get this going again at St. Cecilia. 1 REST IN PEACE: Rest in peace, Joan Bath (photo 2). Joan had a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Cecilia on Feb. 7. Joan and her twin sister, Elaine Fischer, could 2 always be seen together at our Saturday 4:00 Mass. 1 MOMS GROUP: This month the Moms Group visited St. Margaret Hall (photo 3) and passed out Valentine s cards. Fr. Jason also met them after their meeting to bless their cars (photo 4). 1 SCHOOL DANCE: The older students from St. Cecilia School had their school dance Friday night, Feb. 9. I enjoyed watching them dance, and I was really impressed at how dressed up they were(photo 5) YEAR ANNIVERSARY COUPLES: On Sunday, Feb. 18, we celebrated married couples who have hit the 25 years and over mark of being married (photo 6). I was grateful to all those who helped put this together, and I am glad my parents were able to attend
