3 T H E C ORNER 3 February 17, 2019 THE MONTH OF THE HOLY FAMILY February is the month of the Holy Family. In our present day, we are seeing the struggles of families who are trying to live a Christian life. Let us look upon the Holy Family for an example of what we should strive for in our family life. Indeed, what the Holy Family exemplifies best that we can put into practice is that they always put the will of God first and foremost in their lives. The will of God was what ultimately drove this family and should drive each and every one of our Christian families. Amen? Amen! PRAYER FOR PEACE IN OUR FAMILY Lord Jesus, be with my family. Grant us Your peace and harmony, an end to conflict and division. Gift us with compassion to better understand each other, wisdom and love to assist each other, and trust and patience to live peacefully together. Grant that through the intercession of your mother, Mary, and St. Joseph, our family may become a holy family accepting each other, working together in unity, selflessly dedicated to one another and to You. Amen. We have confessions every weekday at St. Cecilia following the 9 AM Mass. Confession heals, confession justifies, confession grants pardon of sin, all hope consists in confession; in confession there is a chance for mercy. - St. Isidore of Seville Saint Cecilia Dresser Project 2019 For quite a number of years, Saint Cecilia parish has generously contributed to a dresser project. Through this project, we collect baby items that will be donated, through Pregnancy Center East, to a mother who has made the choice of life for her unborn child. Many parishioners find this to be a very positive way to express their support for the pro-life movement. This year s dresser can be found in the vestibule with a list of suggested items. We are collecting baby items from February 2 through March 3; everyone s participation is welcome and appreciated! 6 Catholic FAQs What is a vocation? A vocation in the Catholic sense is your God-given destiny or purpose in life. Everyone has a unique gift from God that allows him or her to further the good news in the world. One lives out this gift through one s vocation. While vocation often is used to mean a call to the priesthood or to the religious life, the Church recognizes marriage as a vocation as well. The basic states of life in which Catholics live out their vocations are single, married, and ordained or religious life. The single state of life encompasses both those laity who never marry or who are widowed as well as those who enter religious life as a sister or a brother. RCIA This Week Please pray for all of those journeying to full Communion with the Catholic Church! This week s (February 13) RCIA lesson is PENANCE & ANOINTING OF THE SICK: God s Mercy Revealed. This session will cover: Some of the key foundations for building a strong marriage Why marriage is a sacrament and what difference this makes for married couples Christ s love for his Church is the model for marriage The difference between divorce and annulments in the Catholic Church And finally, the second sacrament of service Holy Orders Questions for the week: What is the difference between a contract and a covenant? What is your purpose in life and how does the word vocation fit in with it? What are the four pillars of Christian marriage as reflected in the Rite of Matrimony, and what does each entail? If you aren t married, how can you use your single state to reflect Christ s sacrificial love and service to others more? EAST S I D E FAITH 6 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. Genesis 2:24 33 Days to Morning Glory A 6-week retreat featuring Fr. Michael Gaitley This study began on February 14 and continues until March 25. You are still welcome to join if you missed the first session. 12:30-2PM in the rectory meeting space at St. Margaret- St. John and facilitated by seminarian Louis Jacquemin 7-8:30 PM in the St. Cecilia Commons and facilitated by Fr. Jacob Willig From Fr. Michael E. Gaitley, MIC, author of the bestselling book Consoling the Heart of Jesus, comes an extraordinary 33- day journey to Marian consecration. Featuring the teachings of four giants of Marian spirituality St. Louis de Montfort, St. Maximilian Kolbe, St. Teresa of Calcutta, and Pope St. John Paul II Fr. Gaitley shows how simple it is to put Marian devotion into practice. People s lives today are often busy and challenging. Stage 1 of the Hearts Afire parish-based program offers individuals a quick and easy way to withdraw from the demands of daily life and enter into a peaceful interior reflection on their relationship with Christ in the context of Marian devotion. We begin with the Immaculate Heart because Mary leads us to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The end result is that, by learning to entrust ourselves to the Mother of Our Lord, we can discover a transforming trust in Jesus himself. Men. Are you looking for a good way to challenge yourself and to grow in your faith in this new year? Do you want to pray with other men, but can t find the time in the evenings? Please join one of our region s bible studies at St. Margaret-St. John at 6:05 AM every Tuesday morning in the basement of the church. St. Anthony also offers Men s Bible Fellowship on Fridays at 6:30 AM in the parish center at 5122 Chapman Avenue. 7 ST. ANTHONY PARISH 7 Loving Our Neighbor: Black History Month Discussion Listen! Learn! Think! Pray! Act! Faithfully attending to these imperatives will help all of us become aware of the widest range of options within our horizon of possibilities. Jesus of Nazareth has given us the most fundamental option that all people should exercise from their horizon of possibilities. Drawing on Deuteronomy 19:7-18 and Leviticus 6:4-5, Jesus teaches us the Law of Love (Matthew 22:35-40). We must love God with our whole heart and our whole being. And we must love our neighbor as we love ourselves. It is a threefold law. Love God! Love ourselves! Love our neighbor! And, in the story of the man who shows compassion to the stranger, beaten, robbed, and ignored by his countrymen (Luke 10:25-35), Jesus teaches us that our neighbor is any fellow human being of any background anywhere. Communities, whether religious or secular, that overlook, ignore, or reject this Law of Love from their horizon of possibilities make decisions, erect laws, and create social structures that have a dangerous flaw at the foundation. Most Catholics readily affirm the truth of this Law of Love. Most also acknowledge that Jesus words become more and more difficult to obey as we face complex social, moral, political, and personal situations about which Catholics themselves may disagree. [From The Horizon of Possibilities: The Catholic Church and the Racial Divide in the United States: Old Wounds Reopened by Bishop Edward Braxton] Our final Loving Our Neighbor: Reflections on Race conversation will take place next Sunday, February 24. We will talk about the US Bishops new pastoral letter, Open Wide Our Hearts: The Enduring Call to Love. Loving Our Neighbor: Opposing antisemitism During March, our conversation on loving our neighbor will focus on our Jewish brothers and sisters, who have faced a long history of hate, often on the part of Christians. On Sunday, March 17, the Peace & Justice Committee is organizing a field trip to the Holocaust and Humanity Center in its new location at Union Terminal. We will leave directly after the 11:30 Mass so that we are able to spend as much time as possible at the Center before it closes at 3 PM. This trip will give us some sense of the history of antisemitism, particularly as manifested during the Holocaust. On Sunday, March 24, we will be welcoming Jackie Congedo, Director of the Jewish Community Relations Council, will share how antisemitism continues to beleaguer Jewish communities in the world today. You can sign up for the trip to the Holocaust Center on the sheet on the table in back of church. Carpools will be arranged. Find out what is going on at MEAC If you would like to know more about what is happening at the Madisonville Education & Assistance Center, you can sign up to receive their s. Some of the topics in their most recent include a request for GED tutors Marketplace pantry volunteers, as well as for food and swimsuit donations. this address, contact@meaccincinnati.org, and ask to be added to their list or follow MEAC on Facebook. Refresh Your Soul Conference on Living Well with Purpose Monday, March 18, 2019 from 9 am to 3:15 pm, at the Cintas Center at Xavier University, the Refresh Your Soul Conference will be presented by the ERS Parish Health Ministry. Keynote speaker is Kathryn Spink, bestselling author and authorized biographer for Mother Teresa, in her book Saint of Calcutta. She will share what made the saint s care of the poor, sick and dying so exceptional and accessible to us all. Other featured speakers include Rabbi Abie Ingber, Leah Sarris, and Kay Frances.
