3 THE COR NER 3 February 3, 2019 FEAST OF SAINT BLAISE Sunday, Feb. 3, we celebrate the feast of St. Blaise and the blessing of the throats. It is a very special ceremony that is practiced on his feast day. Two candles are consecrated for this sacramental. They are blessed on Candlemas on Feb. 2. Each year after Mass, we bless throats. The person saying the blessing of the throat says, Through the intercession of Saint Blaise, bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from every disease of the throat and from every other illness: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Please stay for a short while after Mass this weekend so that you can have your throat blessed and experience this wonderful sacramental of our Church. Amen? Amen! Saint Cecilia Dresser Project 2019 For quite a number of years, Saint Cecilia parish has generously contributed to a dresser project. Through this project, we collect baby items that will be donated, through Pregnancy Center East, to a mother who has made the choice of life for her unborn child. Many parishioners find this to be a very positive way to express their support for the pro-life movement. This year s dresser can be found in the vestibule with a list of suggested items. CELEBRATION: St. Anthony parishioners celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. at the MLK Breakfast at the Freedom Center. JOSEPH ALTAR FLOORING: As part of the St. Cecilia sanctuary renovation project, the step in front of the St. Joseph altar has been rebuilt using marble to match what had been there a while back (photo 3, 4). The original step was removed when the old baptismal font was moved in front of that altar decades ago. Hard to tell it was ever gone now! 1 MARCH FOR LIFE: This year we had a lot of groups from our region attend the March for Life in Washington, DC. Fr. Jacob and Sarah Rose took a group of young adults (photo 5). The children from Divine Mercy and Edmund Campion (photo 6) also went to the march. It is wonderful to know that so many of our parishioners support this cause and went out in the cold to march for their belief. 1 MINI-MARCH: There was a mini-march here in Cincinnati (photo 7) for those who could not attend the March for Life in DC. We had some parishioners from St. Cecilia attend the local march. It was a nice turnout despite the cold and snow

Bob Rottgers, exorcist for the Covington Diocese, will give a talk at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Fort Thomas, KY, on Sunday, February 17, at 7 PM. Included in his talk will be intriguing true stories of the powerful protection of the Epiphany Blessing for your home (instruction kits for the blessing will be given out). Everyone is welcome. Questions... call (859) The Serra Club The Serra Club is an international Catholic lay apostolate whose mission is to support and foster vocations to the priesthood and religious orders. Saint Junipero Serra is the patron. They are inviting anyone interested in more information and in possibly becoming a member to a dinner on Feb. 20, 2019, in the undercroft at St. Peter in Chains Cathedral. A social hour will begin at 6 PM followed by dinner at 7 PM. The evening s speaker will be Judy Cozzens (photo), president of the Serra National Council of the United States. Anniversary Celebration Breakfast All St. Cecilia couples who have been married 25 years or more are invited to attend a celebratory breakfast in their honor on Sunday, February 17. This invitation is extended to all parishioners who have lost their spouses and would like to celebrate the wonderful memories of their marriage and married life. Plan to enjoy a breakfast, prepared by our volunteers, with your fellow parishioners in the parish commons immediately following the 10 AM Mass. 6 Catholic FAQs Who is Padre Pio? At age 15, St. Padre Pio took the Habit of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin. On the day of his installation, he took the name of Pio in honor of St. Pius V. After years of study, the 23-year-old was ordained a priest. On September 20, 1918, Padre Pio was kneeling in front of a large crucifix when he received the visible marks of the Crucifixion, making him the first stigmatized priest in the history of the Church. The doctor who examined him could not find any natural cause for the wounds. Padre Pio had the ability to read the hearts of the penitents who flocked to him for confession, which he heard for 10 to 12 hours a day. He used the confessional to bring both sinners and devout souls closer to God; he would know just the right word of counsel or encouragement that was needed. 7 ST. ANTHONY PARISH 7 Today in our country men, women, and children are being denied opportunities for full participation and advancement in our society because of their race. The educational, legal, and financial systems, along with other structures and sectors of our society, impede people's progress and narrow their access because they are black, Hispanic, Native American or Asian. The structures of our society are subtly racist, for these structures reflect the values which society upholds. They are geared to the success of the majority and the failure of the minority. Members of both groups give unwitting approval by accepting things as they are. Perhaps no single individual is to blame. The sinfulness is often anonymous but nonetheless real. The sin is social in nature in that each of us, in varying degrees, is responsible. All of us in some measure are accomplices. As our recent pastoral letter on moral values states: "The absence of personal fault for an evil does not absolve one of all responsibility. We must seek to resist and undo injustices we have not ceased, least we become bystanders who tacitly endorse evil and so share in guilt in it." Malachi Lawrence will facilitate a conversation on two documents by Bishop Edward K. Braxton of Belleville, IL and the US Conference of Catholic Bishops new pastoral.
