3 THE CORNER SEPT Catechetical Sunday This Sunday we celebrate Catechetical Sunday. The theme for this year is Living as Missionary Disciples, and it provides dioceses, parishes and other church ministries with a road map to new paths for the Church s journey of evangelization. One of the things that we are hearing from our young adults is that they want a relationship with Christ. They are looking for a friendship that leads to community. They are also very interested in sharing and caring for those in need. One way they are doing this is by being open to conversation with those around us, and this is something we can all do. Here are some basic steps* we can take to quickly and easily share our faith. A short, two-minute conversation can change a person s life forever. A face-to-face conversation about Jesus Christ and his Church can begin with an icebreaker. Often it is helpful to give someone a tangible reminder of Christ s love for them, like a Rosary or a holy medal. Invite the person to share something of their story with you. Get to know them as you would anyone you meet for the first time. Consider that this person is loved by God and that the Holy Spirit may have put them in your life so that they can hear the Gospel. Ask them if they go to church or to describe their relationship with God as a way to start talking about faith. Offer to share one good reason why you choose to believe in God or be a Christian. Offer to remember them in prayer daily for the next week and ask them if they have a particular prayer request. Offer to pray for them on the spot, placing the burden to pray on you and not on them. Ask permission to contact them later and tell them you would like to invite them to a parish event, or even over to your own home. Follow up on your promise to contact them. Invite them to events at the parish or small groups where they can explore the Gospel. 3 * A GOSpel RefleCtIOn by father Jason Williams MAttHeW 18:21-35 I say to you, forgive not seven times, but seventy-seven times In order to teach peter of the necessity for repeated forgiveness among disciples of Jesus, our Lord tells this familiar parable of the king and the debts of his servants. Each of us can be likened to the servant who owed the king a debt far beyond his capacities to repay. Our sins are offenses that cause harm to ourselves, to those around us, and to God whom we should love above all else. It is easy to get used to our sinfulness, telling ourselves, It s not that bad or God understands. God does understand the truth of human sin, much more than we do. that s why he sent his Son to save us, to redeem us, to pay back the debt we could never pay back on our own. What a gift! Just as it s appropriate to thank our friends and loved ones for the gifts they give to us at birthdays or other special occasions, we should never tire of thanking God for the gift of Jesus, our Savior. A great way to show our thanks for such love is to imitate his mercy and forgive those who sin against us learning, like Peter, that we shouldn t settle for a minimum, but forgive as often as is necessary. We offer baptism classes on the second Sunday of every month at noon in the parish house. On the third Sunday we offer the classes to our Hispanic families.

4 S CATECHESIS 4 Are we all supposed to become saints? Yes. The purpose of our life is to be united with God in love and to correspond entirely to God s wishes. We should allow God to live his life in us (Mother Teresa). That is what it means to be holy: a saint. [ , ] every man asks himself the question: Who am I and why am I here, how do I find myself? faith answers: Only in holiness does man become that for which God created him. Only in holiness does man find real harmony between himself and his Creator. Holiness, however, is not some sort of self-made perfection; rather, it is union with the incarnate love that is Christ. Anyone who gains new life in this way finds himself and becomes holy. (YOUCAT question 342) Interested in Becoming Catholic? Our regional RCIA program, Catholicism 101, is accepting new inquirers of the faith! If you have been thinking about becoming Catholic, or know someone that has, please register for this program! Catholicism 101 is a dynamic approach that studies the fundamental teachings of the Catholic faith. We invite All of you to register for this amazing program. this is the perfect program for a first-time inquirer to the faith as well as for a seasoned Catholic who simply wishes to brush up on Church teaching. We guarantee that everyone will learn something new about Christ, His Church, and her teachings. Classes begin on September 13. We meet on the first and third Wednesday of each month at 7 pm in St. Cecilia Commons. For all questions and to register, please contact our Director of Religious Education, Cody Egner, at cegner@eastsideregion.org or , ext prep Registration for Registration for the prep sessions is now available. Please go to the parish website, to find the digital registration form for the school year. Please direct all questions to Cody Egner at cegner@ eastsideregion.org or , ext the first class is on Sunday, September 17, at 8:30 AM. Love your faith even more. Sacred Heart Radio FM & 740 AM QUOTE OF THE WEEK Meet Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross ( ) A brilliant philosopher who stopped believing in God when she was 14, Edith Stein was so captivated by reading the autobiography of Teresa of Avila that she began a spiritual journey that led to her baptism in twelve years later she imitated Saint Teresa by becoming a Carmelite, taking the name Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Born into a prominent Jewish family in Breslau, Germany now Wroclaw, poland edith abandoned Judaism in her teens. As a student at the University of Göttingen, she became fascinated by phenomenology, an approach to philosophy. excelling as a protégé of edmund Husserl, one of the leading phenomenologists, Edith earned a doctorate in philosophy in She continued as a university teacher until 1922 when she moved to a Dominican school in Speyer; her appointment as lecturer at the Educational Institute of Munich ended under pressure from the Nazis. After living for four years in the Cologne Carmel, Sr. Teresa Benedicta moved to the Carmelite monastery in echt, netherlands, in the nazis occupied that country in In retaliation for being denounced by the Dutch bishops, the nazis arrested all Dutch Jews who had become Christians. Teresa Benedicta and her sister Rosa, also a Catholic, died in a gas chamber in Auschwitz on August 9, pope John paul II beatified teresa Benedicta of the Cross in 1987, and canonized her 12 years later. There is only one tragedy in the end, not to have been a saint. léon Bloy

5 p ASt OR S RAMBl I n GS SEPT ICED COFFEE BAR: We had a great turnout (photo, above) at our Iced Coffee Bar meet-and-greet after the 10:00 Mass on Aug. 27. Sarah Rose Sperduto introduced herself at the Masses and was able to meet some of our young adult parishioners. There was an signup list that was available for those who want to be part of the Young Adult Group. If you didn t get on the list but would like to, please ssperduto@stceciliacincinnati.org. 1 FATHER DUY: please join us on Sat., Sept. 30, at the 4:00 Mass to celebrate Fr. Duy s priesthood. Fr. Duy (photo, below) was ordained on July 16 and is now back in his diocese in Oklahoma. We wanted him to come back and do a Mass with us once he was ordained, so he will be joining us later this month. Please come to the Mass, and then join us afterward to celebrate. We will all be going directly outside to our own Oktoberfest. You can watch a video clip of Fr. Duy addressing his parish where he is now the associate pastor here: churchofsaintmary.com/we-welcomeour-new-associate-pastor-father-duy-nguyen 1 PRIESTS PERSONNEL BOARD: I was recently elected to the Priests personnel Board to represent the ordination years of In this position, I will be given the responsibility to help the archbishop in selecting pastors and parochial vicars to put them in the positions that are best suited for both the priests and the parishes involved. 1 WORLD S FINEST CHOCOLATE FUNDRAISER: We had such great success with last year s candy bar sale for our school fundraiser that we re going to kick off this year with the sale again. Like last year, our 6th-, 7th-, and 8th-grade students will raise money to help offset the cost of their trips to Camp Kern (grades 6, 7) and Washington, DC (grade 8), while all other proceeds will go to support our pto. We have a flyer in the bulletin, and there will be someone at the side doors after all the Masses. 1 NEW SPACES: Our newly renovated school spaces this year were room 1 (Mrs. Wispé s room) and room 7 (Ms. Dorato s science lab). Students are enjoying working in these new spaces. 1 LIGHTHOUSE CDS: On our lighthouse CD display (photo, below), we have an introductory CD by Edward Sri on relativism and how we understand morality in our world. It s really inspiring, and if you enjoy it and are looking for a longer study, he has an 8-part DVD series to take you deeper. I always want my parishioners to keep studying their faith. We have wonderful studies being offered by our director of religious of education, and we have the Lighthouse series, which are in the back of church. 1 WAR VETERANS FLAG: Just recently an anonymous donor dropped off a piece of St. Cecilia memorabilia. It was a flag (photo, below) to advertise the St. Cecilia war veterans of post Being a person who loves antiquities, I found this relic to be incredible, and I can t wait to find a way to frame it so it can be appreciated. I want to thank the anonymous donor for the donation. I hope that person will contact me so I can thank them for allowing St. Cecilia to reclaim this beautiful piece of history. 5 PRAYER REQUEST for the special intention of St. Cecilia parish & taylor Avenue residents that God s will be done regarding the development of the 5/3 Bank site property.

6 S parish news & NOTES 6 The Brotherhood Our mens group meets on the first Saturday morning of every month. We are open to any man or boy, married or single. We meet early, offer our intentions, and pray the Rosary along Madison Avenue, hoping to witness strong male spirituality to the neighborhood. Then we usually have coffee and breakfast in the rectory. Joining the group is easy... just show up on the first Saturday of every month at 7:30 AM! Brotherhood member Mark Milliron is pictured at left with his signature chuck wagon. Mark and his wife go to great lengths to prepare coffee and breakfast for the men who meet on Saturdays. We thank Mark (who is also chair of Worship Commission) for his dedication to the men of the parish, and the hospitality and love shown through this important part of our group. In addition to Saturday Rosaries, we will be praying Vespers together every third thursday at 8 pm, beginning on Sept. 21. this gives us time to have dinner, maybe put kids to bed, and close the evening in glad thanksgiving with other men of faith. We hope this opportunity makes the Brotherhood accessible to men who can t make the early Saturday meeting. either Nathan (nathan.beiersdorfer@yahoo. com or nathan.cinefro@gmail.com) for more details.
