3 THE CORNER SEPT Prayers for Peace At St. Cecilia, we have spent our weekend in prayer and adoration during the Forty Hours Devotion. At St. Margaret-St. John, there was a day spent in prayer with the Fatima statue that was part of a pilgrimage. At St. Anthony, parishioners walked around the community for the purpose of getting to know their neighbors. Throughout the region, we have spent time promoting and praying for peace in our nation. Our country is experiencing a time of spiritual and political strife. We are being divided by hatred and anger, yet we have available to us the most powerful weapon against this hatred. We have the love of Jesus Christ. We can overcome the abhorrence of the hatred we have seen by working together in love and peace. Our bishops have come together to form a group to fight against this hatred, but we all have to do more. We have to take it upon ourselves to work in our communities with the love of Christ as our example. My challenge to the parishioners in the region, as well as to myself, is for each of us to think of what step we can take in our own lives to be ambassadors for the peace that is so greatly needed. Amen? Amen! A GOSPEL REFLECTION by Father Jason Williams MATTHEW 18: If your brother or sister listens to you, you have won them over. There is an ancient adage in Christian circles: No one gets to heaven on their own, and no one goes to hell on their own. We re all in this together, and we look forward to sharing eternity together: each of us in perfect union with God and through him with each other. All our differences will be washed away in the saving Blood of Jesus, and we will share in the exquisite joy of the beatific vision. With such joyful hope we can approach the work of helping each other to grow in Christian perfection. Such a task isn t about saying we ve accomplished something or patting ourselves on the back, it s about rejoicing in others who give themselves over to Christ and allow his love to be reflected through their lives to those the Lord places in their path each day. Our Lord instructs us today on how to forgive, how to build each other up, and how to go about the delicate process of calling a brother or sister in Christ to give themselves over more fully to the Lord. The basis for any of these undertakings is always charity: willing the ultimate good of the other, desiring that they share in the fullness of joy in heaven. If that is our motive, then we shouldn t fear pointing out to them the areas where they can be more Christlike. We have an obligation to do this for each other; it doesn t mean we first have to be perfect ourselves, or otherwise fear the label of hypocrite. On the contrary, we would be failing in our Christian duty if we didn t help those the Lord has placed in our path. May he grant us the grace to always do so in charity. We offer baptism classes on the second Sunday of every month at noon in the parish house. On the third Sunday we offer the classes to our Hispanic families.

4 S CATECHESIS 4 Why is there injustice among humanity? All people have the same dignity, but not all of them meet with the same living conditions. In cases where injustice is man-made, it contradicts the Gospel. In cases where men and women have been endowed by God with different gifts and talents, God is asking us to rely on one another: in charity one should make up for what the other lacks [ , ]. There is a kind of inequality among men and women that does not come from God but rather originates in societal conditions, especially in the unjust distribution of raw materials, land, and capital worldwide. God expects us to remove from the world everything that is plainly contrary to the Gospel and disregards human dignity. Yet there is another sort of inequality among people that is quite in keeping with God s will: inequality in talents, initial conditions, and opportunities. These are an indication that being human means being there for others in charity so as to share and to promote life. YOUCAT question 331 Interested in Becoming Catholic? QUOTE OF THE WEEK Meet Saint Joan of the Cross ( ) An encounter with a shabby old woman many dismissed as insane prompted Saint Joan to dedicate her life to the poor. For Joan, who had a reputation as a businesswoman intent on monetary success, this was a significant conversion. Born in 1666 in Anjou, France, Joan worked in the family business a small shop near a religious shrine from an early age. After her parents death she took over the shop. She quickly became known for her greediness and insensitivity to the beggars who often came seeking help. That was until she was touched by the strange woman who claimed she was on intimate terms with the deity. Joan, who had always been devout, even scrupulous, became a new person. She began caring for needy children. Then the poor, elderly, and sick came to her. Over time, she closed the family business so she could devote herself fully to good works and penance. She went on to found what came to be known as the Congregation of Saint Anne of Providence. It was then she took the religious name of Joan of the Cross. By the time of her death in 1736 she had founded 12 religious houses, hospices, and schools. 5 PASTOR S RAMBLINGS SEPT WELCOME BACK, STUDENTS: On Aug. 22, our students made their way back for their first day of school (photos, above). There were 265 students at school on Tuesday. That is exciting news for our school. In a time when Catholic school enrollment is dropping, ours has not only stabilized but is having a growth spurt. 1 SUMMER VACATION: Mary Lou Boylan enjoyed her vacation in Boyne Falls, Mich. She is pictured below, far left, at St. Augustine Church with Fr. Partridge. 1 HAPPY ANNIVER- SARY! Sr. Mary Henry Bernard (photo, below, second from left) celebrated the 70th anniversary of her profession to the religious life. Thank you, Sr. Mary Henry, for your unselfish dedication to the Church and her people. 1 CONGRATULATIONS! Sean Murphy and Meredith Goodwin (photo, below, center) celebrated the Sacrament of Marriage on Aug. 26. Corn hole, water balloons, frisbee, and other lawn games 6 Oakley Food Pantry The pantry is always in need of food and household items. Currently, peanut butter, fruit, tuna fish, canned pastas, cereals, and toilet paper are of particular need. You can drop off donations at any of the St. Cecilia church doors or in the vestibule during the day or on Tuesdays from AM at the pantry at the United Church of Christ at 4100 Taylor Avenue directly across the street from the school. Whatever you can give would be greatly appreciated. Parking Note You may have noticed tow trucks circulating in the old 5/3 Bank parking lot recently. The towing company has been enthusiastically enforcing their contract. The new owners have arranged for St. Cecilia parishioners to use the parking lot for an hour before and after the weekend Masses. If you use their lot for weekend Mass parking, be sure to move your car if you stay in the area after Mass. There is plenty of parking in our lot for daily Mass and Holy Hour, so please use our newly reconditioned lot to avoid being towed. Also, a quick reminder to move purses, packages, cell phones, pagers and other valuables to your trunk when parking. This will help eliminate car break-ins. Need a little spiritual pick-me-up in the middle of the week? Join us for our 6:45 AM Mass every Wednesday. Then head to the Madison Diner with us for breakfast. It s a nice crowd and great food. Love your faith even more. Honoring Fatima In remembrance of the 100 th anniversary of Our Lady s apparitions to the now saints Francisco, Jacinta and Lucia, we will meet at the outdoor shrine of Our Lady of Fatima on the eastern side of St. Cecilia Church to pray a rosary at 7 PM on the 13 th day of every month through October. This Wednesday, Sept. 13, is the next opportunity to join us. One rosary will be recited along with hymns to our Lady.
