3 THE CORNER NOV Christ Is the King Today we celebrate the one who is called to be our leader and King Jesus Christ. Oftentimes we are led by the values of societal norms, our peers, trends, family and friends, but that is perhaps being awfully trusting and overly optimistic that those groups are truly going to lead you where the Lord wants you to be. Ultimately, where the Lord wants you to be is united with him, both while you live and when you die. Today as Catholics, through this Feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, we establish for ourselves whom we are called to be led by. Also on this day, through Christ s Church, the whole world is reminded in whom they should put their hope and trust, as well as where truth is found. Amen? Amen! We will have two Masses on Christmas Eve, 3 PM and 5 PM, as well as at midnight on Christmas morning and 10 AM on Christmas day. 4 EASTSID E FAITH Credo (I Believe) What is purgatory? Purgatory, often imagined as a place, is actually a condition. Someone who dies in God s grace (and therefore is at peace with God and men) but who still needs purification before he can see God face to face is in purgatory. The Church gives the name purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of the damned. The Church formulated her doctrine of faith on purgatory especially at the councils of Florence and Trent. The tradition of the Church, by reference to certain texts of Scripture, speaks of a cleansing fire. As for certain lesser faults, we must believe that, before the Final Judgment, there is a purifying fire. He who is truth says that whoever utters blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will be pardoned neither in this age nor in the age to come. From this sentence we understand that certain offenses can be forgiven in this age, but certain others in the age to come (CCC 1031). 4 A Gospel Reflection by Father Jason Williams MATTHEW 25:31-46 As often as you did it for one of these least brethren of mine, you did it for me. Christ is indeed King, and while to some degree we live in His Kingdom now, we know that it will not be fulfilled until we are united with Him in eternity. It is in our efforts each day to build this kingdom now that we move step by step towards the eternal goal of happiness with God. In our Gospel today, Christ teaches us that we truly love Him by loving others. Each of our daily actions, no matter how small they may seem to be, has the potential to become a means for uniting us more closely to God now and of exciting our hearts to be with Him forever. What may seem like a simple act of kindness is in reality a powerful testimony to our willingness to serve God in each person we meet. May God grant us the grace of an ever-increasing faith so that we may serve Him with love in all we do, and may we recognize Jesus in all those he places in our paths. RCIA THIS WEEK Please pray for all of those journeying to full communion with the Catholic Church! This week s (November 29) RCIA lesson is The Four Last Things: What happens after we die? At some point in our lives we all wonder what will happen after we die. Of course, none of us can know exactly what will occur despite the numerous books written about near-death experiences but as Christians we have one who has gone before us in the person of Jesus, whose Death and Resurrection shed light on what awaits us. He has given us some indication of what awaits, and the Church has continued to help us with her instruction. The Church teaches that if we are to grow and mature as Christians, we need to take time to prayerfully consider the Four Last Things death, judgment, Heaven, and Hell. Unless and until we take these things seriously, our life here on earth will lack meaning and focus. It s only when we consider the decisions we make in the light of eternity that our entire lives begin to make sense and our relationship with God can come to full maturity. Questions for the week: We all have various images of Heaven. What do you picture Heaven being like? Similarly, what do you picture Hell being like? Why is it accurate to state, God doesn t send people to Hell? What is the true Catholic teaching on purgatory? 6 S PASTOR S RAMBLINGS SANCTUARY FLOOR: We are still poised to resurface our sanctuary floor this winter. The original sanctuary floor (photo 1) has served as an inspiration in the planning of the new floor. My hope is that we will do the whole floor in marble, with a checkerboard pattern in the center. The checkerboard design is original to the church. We have sought professional advice to help pick colors and design the floor (photo 2, new tile on top of original at Mary side altar). I will keep you all informed on this most exciting improvement. 1 COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE FOR THE ARCHDIOCESE: At the recommendation of a parishioner, I was asked by the new Director of Communication & Mission Promotion, Mike Schafer, (photo 3) to serve a three-year term as a Communication Commission member. The commission was instituted to help the director assess needs as well as to provide input on consistent messaging and to provide expertise as needed from the wide variety of talent to steer goals to their best outcome. After my first meeting, I was impressed not only with the new 3 4 director but also with all the talent he assembled to be on the commission, myself excluded. 1 EVENING FOR LIFE: As I mentioned in a previous rambling, Right to Life of Cincinnati had their annual fundraiser at the Sharonville Convention Center on Oct. 12. The keynote speakers were Jim Bradford & HK Derryberry (photo 4). I highly recommend checking out these speakers on the web. They spoke as a team and were fantastic. The focus of the right-to-life movement at this time is to work to defund Planned Parenthood, which is the largest provider of abortions in this country. 1 ARCHDIOCESAN OFFICES GETTING MAKEOVER: Due to a structural issue of the building in which the archdiocesan offices are housed, the building is undergoing construction. The archbishop is taking advantage of the opportunity to also give a fresh look to the facility. The renovation of the historic archdiocesan-owned office building on 8th Street (photo 5) is a good use of stewardship, as the building quality from the inside will match the quality of the building on the outside. 1 MEN S GROUPS: We have some great men s groups that have been formed in the last few years and months. We have the Brotherhood of the Holy Rosary that gathers in front of the church at 7 AM on the first Saturday of the month to pray the Rosary, after which they have a delicious 5 standup breakfast and social in the fun confines of the rectory. We also have a Monday morning scripture study group that meets at 7:30 AM to look at the past week s scripture readings and discuss them. Another of our men s groups gathers on the third Thursday of each month at 7 PM for evening prayer, called Vespers (photo 6). Even if you do not know what it is, we can teach you this simple and beautiful prayer of the Church. After the evening prayer, the men gather for some adult beverages and a bonfire in the St. Joseph garden. While we certainly have a lot of younger men at these events, all men at every age and stage are invited to participate. 6

Together they comprise a dynamic music ministry that enhances our liturgies. The St. Cecilia Choir has recorded four CDs in the last six years The Darkest Hour (a meditation on the Passion of Christ), Christmas 2013, Ave Maria (hymns honoring our blessed Mother), and Christ the King (a collection of hymns praising God and the Eucharist).
