3 THE CORNER OCT Stewardship of Finance In the Catholic Church, we believe that all of God s children are important and deserve the respect of life and human dignity. Since everyone makes a difference, every gift to support our Church makes a difference. We should feel honored and privileged to belong to a church that is devoted to life-giving faith. In God s family, sons and daughters in the Son, there are no disposable lives. All men and women enjoy an equal and inviolable dignity. All our loved by God. All have been redeemed by the blood of Christ, who died on the Cross and rose for all. This is the reason why no one can remain indifferent before the lot of our brothers and sisters. (Pope Francis, homily). I have a vision for our Church, and I want it to continue to grow. Every time I see a new face, I am thrilled and edified. I need your continued support to keep the vision alive and moving forward. I want to provide the ministries that are needed to give everyone an opportunity to grow in their relationship with Jesus. I know giving can be hard for some, but if you can truly join me in this vision and know that my desire is to build the ministries that are helping our parishioners, new young adults and young families joining the parishes, and those in need, I hope your faith leads you to give. Amen? Amen! Need a little spiritual pick-me-up in the middle of the week? Join us for our 6:45 AM Mass every Wednesday. Then head to the Madison Diner with us for breakfast. It s a nice crowd and great food. Each Wednesday we are blessed to have Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. What that means is that Jesus is present to us in a special and intimate way on the altar in the monstrance during the hours of 9:30 AM to 8 PM. It is such a peaceful, quiet time in church, where you are free to pray silently or just sit and visit with the Lord for as little or long as you like. It is such a reprieve from the hustle and bustle of life and brings down many graces upon you, your family, and the world. At this time we have a need for people I can call on to fill in half-hour slots once in a while when the permanent adorers can t make it. Please prayerfully consider signing up to be a substitute adorer. Please call, text, or to sign up or ask questions: Carolyn Peddicord at or carolynfpeddicord@gmail.com. 5 2017 FINANCIAL REPORT OCT Financial Performance Summary First, the Finance Committee extends a special thank-you to all who gave of their time, talent, and financial resources to St. Cecilia in The parish closed its fiscal year on June 30. This past fiscal year was a year of growth 139 new families joined the parish, we welcomed 17 new members through RCIA, Sunday Mass attendance increased 5%, and the church festival had another record-breaking year netting $111,055. The school also grew, with 267 students enrolled in 2017, up from 243 in To meet the needs of our growing parish, St. Cecilia made several big investments in staff and programs: Two parish staff members were hired. Coordinator of Youth and Young Adult Ministry Sarah Rose Sperduto joined us in July. She will be focused on developing the young adult community for the parish. Don Franer was also hired as maintenance manager to provide care for the parish s facilities. Multiple faith formation opportunities were offered. St Cecilia hosted 16 faith formation classes and 2 missions, which attracted hundreds of attendees from across the pastoral region The Seton Education Partners Grant was implemented. St. Cecilia School continued its investment in the blended learning model with great results. In early July, we learned that out of the 12 Seton schools found in California, Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Louisiana, our students had the most academic growth in math and reading of all other schools. The parish also made investments in both the church and school facilities. With an additional $50,000 gifted by 4 individuals for the Science Lab remodel, two School classrooms were able to be updated this year. The finance committee continues to move towards its goal of using Festival revenue to fund planned and unplanned capital projects. In 2017, as a result of this effort, 5 projects are currently underway or have been completed: Church bell renovation - $60,000 Commons air conditioner - $85,000 Science lab renovation - $60,000 Classroom #1 renovation - $60,000 Rectory kitchen remodel - $20,000 While dedicating the festival income to capital projects increases the stability of St. Cecilia in the long term, it left a gap of $41,000 to fill in St. Cecilia s operating budget. As our church, school, and parish community continues to grow, that gap is expected to remain in Church bell renovation Commons air conditioner Science lab renovation Classroom #1 renovation Rectory kitchen remodel

6 S 2017 FINANCIAL REPORT Our goal is to close that gap. 6 To ensure that we can continue to support the needs of our growing church, school, and community, we need to set a bold goal of increasing collections to offset that gap. And while we have seen the total amount of collections increase with the number of new parishioners, we have seen the percentage of givers decrease. We need to all be in. Remember what prompted you to join St. Cecilia? Was it the solemnity of the Mass? The beauty of the church? The outreach of our St. Vincent de Paul group? The Moms Group? St. Cecilia School? The inspiration you walked away with after one of the faith formation sessions? The feeling of community you experienced at the festival and Oktoberfest? All of these parts of St. Cecilia make it the thriving community that it is, but all of them require financial support. The primary source of financial support to run these and other ongoing aspects of the church is what you give St. Cecilia in the weekly Offertory collection. Only 51% of our registered parishioners currently contribute, however, through the Offertory collections or online giving. And to those parishioners, we are so thankful for your stewardship and support. To the parishioners currently not contributing, we ask that you reflect back to why you joined the parish. As we turn the corner into 2018, consider financially supporting your parish so that it can continue to serve you and give you what you loved about St Cecilia in the first place. Your financial investment ensures that St. Cecilia will be there for you, and for ST. CECILIA BY THE NUMBERS Fiscal Registered New School Weddings Baptisms Funerals Avg. Sunday Avg. 7 2017 FINANCIAL REPORT OCT future parishioners and generations. A habit of weekly giving can make a difference. If every registered family that does not currently give would donate just $30 a week which is the average weekly contribution we receive we would be well on our way to achieving our goal. On behalf of the Finance Committee, thank you for your prayerful consideration, and for joining us in a commitment to contribute to our growing church family. $40 AVERAGE WEEKLY OFFERTORY GIFT $37 $35 $30 $25 $20 $15 $10 $31 $29 $12 90% 80% 70% 60% 50% 40% 30% OFFERTORY GIVING BY AGE GROUP 78% 71% 49% 37% $5 $- AGE 81+ AGE AGE AGE % 10% 0% Online Giving Continues to Grow Did you know 23% of our weekly contributions now are collected through online giving? This is an easy and secure way to support our parish on a continual basis without worrying about writing a check, remembering your envelope or even carrying cash. It allows you to make on offering even when you may be out of town, and provides you with a current and up-to-date record of your Church contributions, as well as the flexibility to align your paycheck with your offertory commitment. It is very easy to set up an automatic payment, and you are able to adjust the amount you contribute as often as you would like. Please consider the benefits of online giving for you and your family. The Online Giving link can be found on our parish website: stceciliacincinnati.org. Contact Bob Kellison at , ext. 208, with any questions. 7

9 EASTSIDE FAITH OCT Credo (I Believe) Why did Jesus have to redeem us on the Cross, of all places? The Cross on which Jesus, although innocent, was cruelly executed is the place of utmost degradation and abandonment. Christ, our Redeemer, chose the Cross so as to bear the guilt of the world and to suffer the pain of the world. So He brought the world back home to God by His perfect love. God could not show His love more forcibly than by allowing Himself in the person of the Son to be nailed to the Cross for us. Crucifixion was the most shameful and most horrible method of execution in antiquity. It was forbidden to crucify Roman citizens, whatever crimes they were guilty of. Thereby God entered into the most abysmal sufferings of mankind. Since then, no one can say, God does not know what I m suffering. A Gospel Reflection by Father Jason Williams MATTHEW 22:1-14 Invite to the wedding feast whomever you find. We have a Savior who knows us well. Jesus, truly God and yet truly human, is very aware of our struggle to turn away from sin and remain faithful to the Gospel. As he began his public ministry he cried out, Repent, and believe the Good News! That call is the invitation of God the Father inviting all people of all time to the wedding banquet of his Son. Some preferred the cares of daily living to life with God; others became hostile in response to being challenged to set aside their sinful ways. Yet Jesus hopes to welcome each of us into his banquet, clothed in repentance, trust, and charity. The Gospel we are called to believe in is the hope of redemption eternal happiness in heaven wrought through the selfless love of God. Contemplating God s love for us despite our many shortcomings, we ought to be moved to repentance and sincere conversion of heart, mind, and will. We who have been loved so much by God can t help but love in return, and, just as it did for Jesus, love will require sacrifice. Our daily acts of love for God and neighbor are the threads that woven together form the fabric from which our wedding garment is sewn. Pensamientos Evangélicos Dios nos envía al mundo que nos rodea para invitar a otros a la banquete del cielo. God sends us out into the world around us to invite others into the banquet feast of heaven. RCIA THIS WEEK Please pray for all of those journeying to full Communion with the Catholic Church! This week s (October 18) RCIA lesson is The Pascal Mystery. Some of us might be so accustomed to seeing images of crosses in our churches, we may not realize that in the ancient world, the cross was a horrifying image. For people living 2,000 years ago, wearing a cross like jewelry around one s neck would be as shocking as wearing a little electric chair around our necks would be today. The cross was a well-known means of capital punishment, just as an electric chair has been in modern times. Yet the cross is the primary symbol of our faith because it is through Jesus Death on the Cross that we have been given the gift of salvation and eternal life. We call Jesus work of redemption, accomplished principally through His Passion, Death, and Resurrection and Ascension into Heaven, the Paschal Mystery. Questions for the week: Reflect on the following quote: Whoever wants to be My disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow Me (Luke 9:23). Consider some ways you can imitate Christ s sacrificial love more in your life. For example, how can you be more generous in your relationship with God? What are some ways you can deny yourself your time, comforts, or desires and make sacrifices to serve better the people God has placed in your life? To study along with us, please log onto Formed.org (parish code YX2P22), program Symbolon: Knowing the Faith, Session 6. However, despite the couples best efforts, unfortunately a marriage union sometimes fails to reach fulfillment for both parties and may end in a civil divorce. The Catholic Church has mechanisms and processes in place to assist people in these situations, especially if they anticipate another marriage. If you find yourself in this circumstance, we would like to help. To learn more, please contact Joe Fondacaro in our pastoral region at , ext. 222, or at jfondacaro@ eastsideregion.org.
