2 THIRTIETH SUNDAY in ORDINARY TIME The Pastor s Corner All Saints Day On Wednesday of this week, we will celebrate the Solemnity of All Saints. The saints are our brothers and sisters in the faith who followed Christ, living a virtuous life by making themselves available to God in all that they thought, said, and did. They were holy men and women who lived their Catholic faith in the image and likeness of God. We are each called to be a saint. Every single one of us is called to holiness. All of us have a chance to strive to have a deep love of God and achieve a deep spiritual life. We are all given times of suffering and challenges in our lives. God gives us the grace to get through trials and pain. Many times we see the grace of God through these moments in our lives. The saints also experienced these things. They were, like us, not perfect. They had to work on their holiness just like we are called to do. Let us be passionate in our love for God and let us work on striving on our own journey to holiness. Amen? Amen! TO BE SAINTS IS NOT A PRIVILEGE FOR THE FEW, BUT A VOCATION FOR EVERYONE. + Pope Francis + LITURGICAL CELEBRATIONS FOR ALL SAINTS AND ALL SOULS All Saints Day - Holy Day of Obligation Wednesday, November 1 11:45AM Mass at SMSJ 9AM, 12:10PM, & 5:30PM Mass at St. Cecilia All Souls Day Thursday, November 2 11:45AM Mass at SMSJ 7PM Candlelight Mass at St. Anthony with the reading of names of our parishioners who died in the past year and a light reception afterwards. 4 EASTSIDE FAITH Credo (I Believe) From the earliest times in the Church, the concept of APOSTOLIC SUCCESSION has been a hallmark of the faith. Around AD 94, Clement of Rome indicated that the Apostles appointed their successors, and Irenaeus in AD 180 stated that being able to trace a bishop s succession is proof of the truth they teach. Finally Tertullian in the early third century wrote: Let them produce the original records of their churches; let them unfold the roll of their bishops, running down in due succession from the beginning in such a manner that [that first bishop of theirs] bishop shall be able to show for his ordainer and predecessor some one of the apostles or of apostolic men. It is only through the means of a valid Apostolic Succession that Jesus is able to become present, by the power of the Holy Spirit, in the Eucharistic species; or that a priest, in persona Christi, Capitis, is able to forgive sins in the confessional. A Gospel Reflection by Father Jason Williams MATTHEW 22:34-40 You shall love the Lord your God and your neighbor as yourself Following Jesus will change our lives. It is impossible to put his teachings into practice and remain the same because God pours his grace out upon those who do his will. The more we strive to unite ourselves to him through love, the more he will live within us. God, our loving Father, seeks nothing else than to fill us with his own divine life; letting that happen is what it means to be holy. Today Jesus tells us how we can open our souls so that God can fill them with grace and blessings; we do so through love. First, through love of God, and not just love revealed by what we say, but love that has real effects on our lives. We love God when we do what he wants us to do, even if that means turning away from many of the things that the world tries to trap us with: money, pleasure, and power, in all their excessive forms. Second, through love of those God has placed in our paths each day. God loves each of them (even those who bother us), and if we really love God in a way that is stronger than words, we will sacrifice our self-love for the sake of doing good for each of our fellow human beings: generosity, charity, forgiveness. Finally, we open our hearts to the grace of God by loving ourselves. This is very different from selfishness. Loving ourselves means appreciating the wonder of what God has done in creating us, marveling at the divine love that brought us into this world and found us worthy of redemption. We love ourselves by accepting all the love God has for us. Pensamientos Evangélicos Dios nos ha dado todo en amor, nos esforzamos por amar a cambio. (We have been given everything in love, let us strive to love in return.) RCIA THIS WEEK Please pray for all of those journeying to full Communion with the Catholic Church! This week s (Nov. 1) lesson is WHY DO I NEED THE CHURCH? Have you ever heard people say they were spiritual but not religious? It can be hard to tell what they mean. They may mean they believe in God or a higher power but don t attend church. Or they might mean they don t want to have to obey any so-called man-made rules or regulations. As sincere as these people may be (and many are very sincere), religion and spirituality are intricately interwoven. Jesus never expected us to follow a spiritual path without a community, the Church. The truly spiritual life is, as Jesus himself said, like a vine in which he is the trunk and we are the branches. He intends us to be united in his Church through our beliefs, our worship, and the Apostles and their successors whom he left on earth to guide us. And once we begin to understand the mystery of the Church, we realize that it is as impossible to be spiritual without being religious as it is to swim without getting into the water. Questions for the week: How would you define the Church? What does it mean when we say that Christ is present in the Church? Jesus wants to have a personal relationship with us in His Church and not just a private, individualistic one. What are the differences between the two? Reflect on John 15:5-7 ( I am the vine; you are the branches ) and meditate how you can remain in Jesus. To study along with us, please log onto Formed.org (parish code YX2P22), program = Symbolon: Knowing the Faith, Session 8.

However, despite the couples best efforts, unfortunately a marriage union sometimes fails to reach fulfillment for both parties and may end in a civil divorce. The Catholic Church has mechanisms and processes in place to assist people in these situations, especially if they anticipate another marriage. If you find yourself in this circumstance, we would like to help. To learn more about how to get assistance, please contact Joe Fondacaro in our pastoral region at , ext. 222, or at jfondacaro@eastsideregion.org. All inquiries are kept in strict confidence. At a recent Sunday meeting our EDGE youth group students made blankets for the needy served by the Madisonville Education and Assistance Center (MEAC). Youth in grades 6-8 are welcome. EDGE meets the 1st and 3rd Sunday of every month, from 6:30-8 PM at SMSJ. Contact Sarah Rose Sperduto for more information. I am the vine, you are the branches. 7 SAINT MARGARET - SAINT JOHN PARISH + HAPPENINGS + Godspeed to Ben Bates On Sunday, October 15, we bid farewell to Ben Bates who headed off to basic training with the Marines later that week. During the 11AM Mass Ben received a special blessing for God s strength and protection during his time of service. He was joined at Mass by many family members and friends. Afterwards, Fr Jason blessed and Ben raised the new flag which now flies on the flagpole outside of the church. Ben sung for many years in our choir, and it was only fitting to celebrate with them, too, at his final rehearsal. Thank you for your service to our country and good luck, Ben! May the Lord bless you and keep you! School Welcome Mass & Open House We are blessed to again have children walking through our hallways, studying in our classrooms, and playing outside on our campus grounds. The communities of St. Edmund Campion Academy and Divine Mercy Homeschooling Co-op have been great additions to our parish family of St. Margaret-St. John. On Sunday, October 15, we had a special Mass with them and a nice reception downstairs afterwards. They opened up the school to parishioners as well so that we could take a look at all they have been doing. Thanks to Parish Council for hosting this event! Parish Improvements Hopefully you ve noticed some of the recent improvements to our campus and buildings. The parking lot has been resealed and lined; the old CPS trailer has been sent to a new home; and work has begun to replace the backstop of our baseball field. What you may not have noticed are the many smaller projects that have been taking place. WiFi has been installed in the church, cafeteria, and St. Francis Room. New plants have been placed in the pots at the doors. Plans are being considered for repainting the doors and entryways of the church. The new sign for the corner of Murray and Watterson should be arriving soon. All of these projects are helping to make our parish look alive and welcoming; thanks to all those involved. Particular thanks are due to Joe and Karen McKenrick who have invested hours in renewing the landscaping around the church, replacing the roping on our flagpole, sanding and painting the handrails at the side and front entrance. It s because of the generosity of so many volunteers that good things are happening here at St. Margaret - St. John. For our annual Turkey Dinner to be a success, we need your help. Please consider volunteering some time to help us in the preparation, serving, or clean-up of this event. Please call Mary Mathers at the Parish Office ( ) for more information on how you can help make this a great event not only for our parish but for our neighborhood community. Thanks and God bless!
