I hope that you were able to take the time to reflect on your blessings and recognize all that you are thankful for and that God was at the forefront of all of the gratitude you felt that day. Now we are in our last weekend of the liturgical year, moving into a new year. As we come to this Sunday Mass to celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King, we are given a chance of renewal. We receive, in a sense, a gift of beginning a new liturgical year with time to truly live our faith. For some of us it means taking the time to pray a little more each day, to try and attend a daily Mass more often, to share our faith with loved ones, or maybe to read a book that will help with our spiritual growth. This is a chance for us to be compelling and, in a visible way, to stand up for what we believe and to share our beliefs as a missionary activity. Let us lead others to feast at the table with our King. We are grateful for His abundant gifts and the hope to renew our faith once again. Amen? Amen! Beginning the first Sunday in Advent we will pray the prayer to St. Michael after every Mass for the protection of Holy Mother Church. The prayer will be recited after the final blessing and dismissal, just before the recessional hymn. St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

4 pa s t o r s r am b l i n g s Vocations Week: The schoolchildren at St. Cecilia were able to hear different vocations stories during Vocations Awareness Week. They were visited by the Children of Mary (photo 1) and Louie Jacquemin (photo 2), our seminarian intern. I am so glad the students were able to learn more about different vocations. 1 Front Porch Chats during Black Catholic Family Month: On Nov. 4, St. Anthony Parish was blessed with a visit from Deacon Dan Thomas, who preached at both liturgies, and Dr. Jessie Thomas (photo 3), who shared her experiences as an African-American Catholic. Front Porch Chats take place every Sunday of November, Black Catholic Family Month. 1 Congratulations! Adrienne Williams and Anthony Brannen (photo 4) celebrated the Sacrament of Matrimony on Nov. 3. Fr. Jason Williams was the presider. Katherine Gabis and John Webster (photo 5) celebrated the sacrament on Nov. 9, with Fr. Jamie presiding. Please keep these newly wed couples in your prayers. 1 Welcome, Children of God: Brenley Rose, daughter of Daniel and Samantha Peddicord (photo 6), and Dallen Joseph, Lilly May, and Lucas Thomas, sons and daughter (photo 7) of Thomas and Margaret Peddicord, were baptized Nov. 4. Welcome to all of these children! They are grandchildren of longtime parishioners Dave and Carolyn Peddicord. 1 Rest in Peace. My Uncle Wink, Louis Lodge Weber (photo 8), passed from this life on Oct. 23. Wink was the older brother to my dad. His funeral was held at St. Cecilia on Oct. 30. Rest in peace, my dear Uncle Wink

My soul magnifies the lord and my spirit rejoices in god my savior; because he has regarded the lowliness of his handmaid; for behold, henceforth all generations shall call me blessed; because he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. his mercy is from generation to generation on those who fear him. he has shown might with his arm. he has scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart. he has put down the mighty from their thrones, and has exalted the lowly. he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. he has given help to israel, his servant, mindful of his mercy even as he spoke to our fathers, to abraham and to his posterity forever. 6 Eastside Faith 6 My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. Luke 1:47-48 The Road to Canonization Servant of God Fr. Augustus Tolton was born to two slaves, Peter Paul Tolton and his wife Martha Jane, on April 1, With the outbreak of the War between the States, Peter Paul hoped to gain freedom for his family and escaped to the North where he served in the Union Army, and was one of the 180,000 blacks who were killed in the war. His widow decided that she would see her husband s quest for freedom realized in his children. After managing a crossing of the Mississippi River she made her way to Illinois and settled in the small town of Quincy. When her children attempted to attend Catholic school, parents of the other school children were not happy, so to avoid a messy situation, the School Sisters of Notre Dame decided to tutor the Tolton children privately. As Augustus grew older he began displaying an interest in the priesthood. His parish priests, Fathers McGuirr and Richardt, encouraged the young man in this aspiration and tried without success, to enroll him in several diocesan seminaries. If the seminaries would not have him, they would begin Augustus s education in theology themselves. Finally, in 1878, the Franciscan College in Quincy accepted him, and two years later he was enrolled at the college of the Propaganda Fidei in Rome. After completing his courses there, Augustus Tolton was ordained on April 24, His first assignment was Saint Joseph s church in his home town of Quincy, where he served for two years and gained enormous respect from many of the German and Irish parishioners. He was later given a parish on the south side of the city, Saint Augustine s church, which would later become Saint Monica s. This would be Father Tolton s parish for life, and it also became the center from which he ministered to all the Black Catholics of Chicago. He addressed the First Catholic Colored Congress in Washington, D.C., in In 2015, the Cause for Canonization of Fr. Augustus Tolton, begun in 2010, received affirmation of the juridicial validity of the Archdiocesan inquiry into his life and virtues by the Congregation for Causes of Saints, and Fr. Tolton received the distinction of Servant of God. Sacred Heart Radio. 740 AM 89.5 FM Love your faith even more. RCIA this Week Please pray for all of those journeying to full Communion with the Catholic Church! This week s (November 28) RCIA lesson is MARY AND THE SAINTS: Our Spiritual Mother and the Communion of Saints This session will cover: The four basic dogmas the Church teaches about Mary How Jesus is at the heart of everything Catholics believe about Mary Why Catholics do not worship Mary and the saints, but honor them as models for all Christians What Catholics really mean when they say they pray to Mary and the saints Why Mary is the Queen of Heaven The mysteries of the rosary What role Mary should play in the life of every believer Questions for the week: Who is your favorite saint? Why do Catholics honor the saints? What are the four Catholic Marian dogmas? What do they teach us about Jesus and the Father s plan of salvation? How is Jesus command to St. John to Behold your mother a challenge to us in our own prayer life and journey with Jesus? To study along with us, please log onto Formed.org (parish code YX2P22), program = Symbolon: Knowing the Faith ~ Session 9. a Pilgrimage to Ireland with Fr. Jamie Weber September 19-27, 2019 Register at stceciliacincinnati.org Beware of it [haste], for it is a deadly enemy of true devotion; and anything done with precipitation is never done well. Let us go slowly, for if we do but keep advancing we shall thus go far. St. Francis de Sales

7 focus on Justice 7 Let us never forget that, for Christ s disciples, poverty is above all a call to follow Jesus in his own poverty. It means walking behind him and beside him, a journey that leads to the beatitude of the Kingdom of heaven (cf. Mt5:3; Lk 6:20). Poverty means having a humble heart that accepts our creaturely limitations and sinfulness and thus enables us to overcome the temptation to feel omnipotent and immortal. Poverty is an interior attitude that avoids looking upon money, career and luxury as our goal in life and the condition for our happiness. Poverty instead creates the conditions for freely shouldering our personal and social responsibilities, despite our limitations, with trust in God s closeness and the support of his grace. Poverty, understood in this way, is the yardstick that allows us to judge how best to use material goods and to build relationships that are neither selfish nor possessive (cf. Catechism of the Catholic Church, Nos ). Pope Francis message for first World Day of the Poor, Nov 2017 Saengerfest The St. Anthony choir is performing again this year at Saengerfest on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 7 and 8 PM at Memorial Hall. We have a limited number of free tickets, which gain entrance to either or both of our concerts as well as concerts at 9 and 10 PM at various locations around Washington Park and at St. Francis Seraph Church. For the concert schedule, visit saengerfest. To reserve tickets, call the parish office or miabressler@stanthonychurch.net. Thank you from the Jewish Federation Jackie Congedo of the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati called this week to thank us for the letter that we sent in the wake of the Tree of Life shooting in Pittsburgh. She and the staff were touched by the outpouring from this community. Thanks to all who signed. Celebrate Advent with Pope Francis As we enter the season of Advent, the words of Pope Francis are particularly appropriate to consider. During Advent we heard the words of prophets from Isaiah to John the Baptist. Pope Francis himself stands firmly in the prophetic tradition with his calls for peace and justice. On Saturday, Dec. 8, Mary Anne Bressler will offer a morning of reflection on Pope Francis and the Prophetic Tradition, which will examine the ways in which the Pope mirrors the qualities of the Prophets of Hebrew history (9-11 AM, parish center). On the 4 Sundays of Advent (Dec. 2, 9, 16, 23), there will be a book discussion between Masses in the St. Anthony rectory side room on the Pope s recent exhortation Rejoice and Be Glad, which is a reflection on the Beatitudes themselves a prophetic statement. To sign up for either, fill out the form in the back of St. Anthony church or miabressler@stanthonychurch.net. Please note: The St. Margaret-St. John bell choir will accompany the choir on the Feast of Christ the King. Network of Care St. Margaret-St. John is requesting donations of cookies to be put in the Christmas bags the first week of December for the parish homebound and nursing home residents. Your generosity is appreciated. Giving Tree for MEAC s Happy Holiday Shop We will be supporting MEAC s Happy Holiday Shop through our giving tree, which will be in church on Nov. 25. Take an ornament, purchase an item that corresponds to the request, and bring it back to church by Dec. 9. This year MEAC is in particular need of toys. Cleaning out your closets? Think of MEAC! If you have any coats or other gently used clothing items that you do not need, MEAC is happy to accept them for our neighbors in need. Same with pots, pans or other small household items. If you have anything to contribute, please deliver to MEAC (corner of Erie & Roe in the Eastminster Church building) on Tuesdays or Thursdays between 3 and 6 PM. Fall Cleanup, December 1 This is your last chance to invest some sweat equity into the grounds this year! If you have some time between 9 AM and 4 PM and would like to help get the St. Anthony parish grounds ready for winter, please sign up on the sheet in the back of church. Many thanks to those who have helped beautify our property! It looks wonderful! An evening prayer for peace in our troubled world will be held on Nov. 29 at the Holy Hour at St. Anthony. We will pray for all those who have suffered from or have lost loved ones to acts of evil. And we will ask God for the strength and wisdom to always stand for what is good and just. Join us in church at 7PM.
