3 THE CORNER DEC Holy Family We celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family right during the Christmas season a time when we are gathering with our own families. We can look and pray around the Nativity scenes and emulate the Holy Family as the model for all of our Catholic families. When we bring our families to Church and live out our faith in our homes, we are sanctified. Let us continue to live like the Holy Family with Christ as our center. Try each day to start with a prayer. Make it a point to attend Mass and invite family members. Find a rich spiritual reading, and share what you ve read with your family. If you make it part of what your family talks about, they will feel more comfortable sharing a verse in Scripture that they read or quoting a saint that they found inspiring. How can you pull your family together this Christmas season and share the faith as a family unit? Amen? Amen! God always knocks at the door of hearts. He likes to do this. It comes from His heart. But, do you know what He likes best? To knock on the doors of families and find families that are united, to find families that love each other, to find the families that bring up their children and educate them and help them to keep going forward and that create a society of goodness, of truth, and of beauty. 4 EASTSIDE FAITH Credo (I Believe) Is there some inner logic that unites the sacraments with each other? All sacraments are an encounter with Christ, who is Himself the original sacrament. There are sacraments of initiation, which introduce the recipient into the faith: Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. There are sacraments of healing: Reconciliation and the Anointing of the Sick. And there are sacraments of service: Matrimony and Holy Orders. Baptism joins us with Christ. Confirmation gives us his Spirit. The Eucharist unites us with him. Confession reconciles us with Christ. Through the Anointing of the Sick, Christ heals, strengthens, and consoles. In the sacrament of Matrimony, Christ promises his love in our love and his fidelity in our fidelity. Through the sacrament of Holy Orders, priests have the privilege of forgiving sins and celebrating the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. 4 Confession is available every weekday at St. Cecilia following the 9 AM Mass. Confession heals, confession justifies, confession grants pardon of sin, all hope consists in confession; in confession there is a chance for mercy. - St. Isidore of Seville A Gospel Reflection by Father Jason Williams LUKE 2:22-40 The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. The account of the presentation of Jesus in the Temple teaches us several things. We see the obedience of Mary and Joseph in following the precepts of the Law. As faithful Jews they saw fulfillment of the requirements of the Law not as legalism but as a way in which they could tangibly express their love for God who gave the Law to their ancestors as a guide for living in communion with him. The encounters with Simeon and Anna point out that this child is not like any other. He is the Messiah, the one sent by God to save his people. As the light for revelation to the Gentiles Jesus is also the perfect way by which God reveals himself to us. Only by listening to Jesus Christ the Word of God through whose speech gives rise to all of creation, the commandments of the Law, the warnings of the prophets, and the teachings of the Church do we come to know God. Knowing God, we will love him, and loving God, we will serve him. In this way the hope of the prophetess Anna will be realized: we will give thanks to God with joy for all that he has done in his goodness. RCIA THIS WEEK Please pray for all of those journeying to full Communion with the Catholic Church! This week s (January 3) RCIA lesson is an introduction to the Sacraments, particularly baptism and confirmation. In the Catholic Church, there are seven sacraments that are part of a Christian s spiritual life from birth to death. They are signs of grace instituted by Christ to give his divine life to us through the work of the Holy Spirit. But what are these sacraments? Why are they necessary for a relationship with Jesus? And how do the sacraments affect our lives on a daily basis? These are some of the questions we will be talking about this week. We will be looking at the seven sacraments recognized by the Catholic Church in general, and then we will focus more specifically on two sacraments of initiation: Baptism and Confirmation. Along the way, we will see how the sacraments are part of our tool kit as we grow and mature in our faith and our relationship with the Church. Questions for the week: Exactly what is the traditional definition of a sacrament? What is the relationship between the sacraments and grace? Why are the sacraments so important for the spiritual life? What is the primary purpose of the sacraments? St. Anthony Parish is collaborating with Matthew: 25 Ministries to send needed construction tools to Our Lady of Health parish in Dominica to aid in the rebuilding of parishioners houses. Let s make this a parish/region endeavor! Search your basements and garages for spare, gently-worn, unbroken tools! Or donate new tools or money. Stay tuned to the bulletin for sites of collection and specific dates. Marriage Annulments The Catholic Church dedicates much time and effort to prepare couples for marriage. However, despite the couples best efforts, unfortunately a marriage union sometimes fails to reach fulfillment for both parties and may end in a civil divorce. The Catholic Church has mechanisms and processes in place to assist people in these situations, especially if they anticipate another marriage. If you find yourself in this circumstance, we would like to help. 6 S PASTOR S RAMBLING S WELCOME, CHILDREN OF GOD: Welcome to the newly baptized: George Peter, son of Erik and Kari Dunki-Jacobs (photo 1); Bridgette Libby, daughter of George and Carrye Euskirchen (photo 2); and Freya Rocio, daughter of Nicholas and Cherrell Misleh (photo 3). 1 ST. VINCENT DE PAUL CHRISTMAS PARTY: I was happy to be able to attend the annual St. Vincent de Paul Christmas party (photo 4). This is an incredible group of individuals who give their time to help those who are in need. They help at all hours and provide so many services. I am always so impressed by the generosity of our parish in its financial support for St. Vincent de Paul. Many of our own parishioners and neighbors have been able to get through tough times with the help of this society. 1 OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE: We had a nice turnout for our Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe Mass. Some of our schoolchildren came dressed in their folk outfits (photo 5), and we had a large procession who brought up flowers to Mary. 1 SCHOOL CHRISTMAS CONCERT: The children from St. Cecilia School had their Christmas concert on Dec. 14 at the 20th Century Theatre (photo 6). Brother Bob prepared them so well for another year of uplifting Christmas carols. 1 REST IN PEACE: William Thorman Jr. (photo 7) passed away on Nov. 5. His memorial Mass was on Dec. 9 at St. Cecilia. William is the brother of longtime parishioner Paul Thorman
