A lot of time and energy goes into this event. While it is a lot of hard work, a lot of satisfaction and fun is gained by all when one understands that the proceeds benefit the building up of God s kingdom. The festival, considered one of the best in the area, is a great event because of great planning and because of the willingness of parishioners and friends of the parish to pull together to make this a great three-day party. Invite your friends and family to the festival meet up and enjoy the food, the games, and the entertainment provided all weekend, such as great bands, bid & buy, church tours, flea market, cake walk, petting zoo, and rides. It is also important for those of you who can to volunteer your time and energy to the festival. We need workers throughout the weekend but also before and after the festival to refresh those who have been taxed before and during the weekend. Donate to the flea market. Big and small items are welcome, from jewelry to furniture anything except clothes. I also ask you to do your best to buy or sell your raffle tickets. The raffle continues to be a draw with the $10,000 grand prize. If you cannot be at the festival, think about being a sponsor. Altogether, it takes involvement from many in various ways to make a successful parish festival. Please do what you can to help the festival be a kingdom-building event. Amen? Amen! STEWARDSHIP OF FINANCE Collections for the week ending June 17 St. Anthony $8, St. Cecilia $13, St. margaret-st. 4 pa s t o r s r a m b l i n g s St. Anthony a Laudato Si Parish: St. Anthony was recognized as a Laudato Si parish at a prayer service on June 18 at Community of the Good Shepherd (photo 1). Archbishop Schnurr led the prayer and blessed the (completely biodegradable) banners. The recognition was based on the practices of the parish and of the parishioners of being responsible stewards of creation. 1 Totus Tuus: We had another successful week at our Totus Tuus summer camp (photo 2). The children enjoyed it so much. It was great to hear about their experiences. Thank you to Cody Egner and the four counselors who made this not only a great way to learn the faith but also a fun summer event. I was able to join them for their water balloon fight on the final day! 1 Congratulations! Molly and Tyler Humpert (photo 3) celebrated the Sacrament of Matrimony on June 16. May their marriage be richly blessed. 1 Summer Celebration: What a wonderful success was our Summer Celebration at SMSJ (photo 4). A big thank-you to our new chair, Lenny Diaspro, who really worked hard to make this a successful and fun evening! I also want to thank Mary Mathers, Tony Brueneman and Amber Losekamp for their support and hard work. 1 Stricker s Grove: Our annual picnic at Stricker s Grove was enjoyed by all! I loved watching the kids enjoy the rides (photo 5) while their families got to enjoy the food and drinks. We were all very grateful for the air-conditioning, as well. 1 Vacation: While on vacation, parishioner Dan O Connell (photo 6) attended Mass at St. Mary Pro Cathedral in Dublin and Westminster Cathedral in London. His grandkids were able to hear the girls choir sing the Mass in Dublin and a solemn Mass sung in Latin in London. They also got to hear a boys choir sing at St. Martin in the Fields at Trafalgar Square. 1 Clean-Out Day: We had such a successful clean-out day at St. Cecilia. We filled two large dumpsters and emptied a lot of storage rooms (photo 7, 8). A big thank-you to all of those who participated and helped clean out some much needed space!
5 news & notes 5 We Need Booth Volunteers Please consider volunteering to work a game or food booth. Info is on the parish website festival page or visit our info table after mass by the garages. We were married at St. Cecilia in We volunteered last year while preparing for our wedding and really enjoyed getting more involved in the parish. The festival is such a fun way to support St. Cecilia and meet new people. We look forward to volunteering for many years to come. Please join us volunteering this year! Next Flea Market Drop Off July 8 Back by popular demand: St. Cecilia Gardens in the Flea Market Contact Doug & Joy Kornish for information & to volunteer dkornish@cinci.rr.com or Summer Safety Tips from the St. Anthony Health Ministry School is out and the pools are open so have fun, but stay healthy! Drink extra water because the summer heat and humidity can contribute to illnesses, like heat stroke and exhaustion. The very young and very old are at higher risk. Never leave pets and children in a car! Swim safely by never swimming alone and using flotation devices. Protect your skin and eyes from the sun s damaging rays by frequently applying UVA & UVB blocking sunscreen and wearing sunglasses. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or greater, reapplied every 2 hours. Water resistant sunscreens are effective for 40 to 80 minutes of water activity. Enjoy hiking and gardening, but be aware of plants, like poison ivy, that can cause an itchy rash. Consult a healthcare provider if the rash is widespread or on the face. Also watch for ticks and mosquitoes because they are more active in the summer months and can transmit viruses to humans! Decrease the incidence of mosquito bites by limiting standing water, fixing broken window screens, and using EPA-registered insect repellants. Ticks live in heavily wooded areas, so cover exposed skin with clothing and use the insect repellant permethrin. After hiking, take a shower and visibly check for ticks. Dogs are very susceptible to tick bites and tick-borne diseases so check them for ticks and ask your vet about tick prevention products. Foodborne illnesses also increase in warmer weather, so keep food safe during cookouts and camping trips by carefully handling, preparing, and cooking food. Congratulations! Job well done to St. Cecilia School grads Madelyn O Connell and Charles DiMuzio. Madelyn achieved First Honors at St. Ursula Academy for the fourth quarter, and Charles, Second Honors at Archbishop Moeller High School for the second quarter of the school year. Summer Celebration Success! Thank you to all who worked and supported the St. Margaret-St. John Summer Celebration. We had a great turnout and the entire evening was a great success. The following are the winners of the Grand Raffle: Jen Brookhart ($2000), Julie Harmeyer ($1000), and Maria Marshall ($500). Brian Hurley was the winner of the Duck Race. Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sherry Burik whose Mass of Christian Burial was at St. Margaret-St. John on Friday, June 15.
6 Eastside Faith 6 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. Psalm 119:105 Becoming Catholic Curious about the Church? Want to learn more? Call us today at , ext Or join us for the next RCIA Inquiry Session, which will be on July 18 at 7 PM in the St. Cecilia Commons. Anyone interested in learning about the Catholic faith is invited and encouraged to come. do not be afraid to go out on the streets and into public places, like the first apostles who preached Christ and the Good News of salvation in the squares of cities, towns and villages. This is no time to be ashamed of the Gospel. It is time to preach it from the rooftops. Saint John Paul II (World Youth Day 1993) Our next Young Adult Mass & Brunch is this Sunday, July 1. After the 10 AM Mass at St. Cecilia, join us for brunch at Bravo Cucina Italiana in Rookwood at 11:30 PM. A Summer with the Saints Saint Agnes Patroness of Children of Mary Agnes was only twelve years old when she was led to the altar of the pagan goddess Minerva in Rome to offer incense to her. However, she raised her hands to Jesus Christ and made the Sign of the Cross. The soldiers bound her hands and feet. Her young hands were so thin that the chains slipped from her wrists. When the judge saw that she was not afraid of pain, he had her clothes stripped off, and she had to stand in the street before a pagan crowd. She cried out, Christ will guard His own. While the crowd turned away from her, a young man dared to look at her with sinful thoughts. A flash of lightning struck him blind. Agnes was offered the hand of a rich young man in marriage, but she answered, Christ is my Spouse. He chose me first and His I will be. He made my soul beautiful with the jewels of grace and virtue. I belong to Him whom the angels serve. After having prayed, she bowed her neck to the sword. At one stroke her head was cut off, and the angels took her soul to heaven. The name Agnes comes from the Latin word agnus, meaning lamb, and reminds us of the gentleness of this young saint. All-powerful and ever-living God, you choose the weak in this world to confound the powerful. As we celebrate the anniversary of the martyrdom of St. Agnes, may we, like her, remain constant in faith. There is now Eucharistic Adoration at all three parishes of our region: Wednesdays from 9:30 AM-8 PM with Holy Hour and confessions from 7-8 PM at St. Cecilia, Thursdays from 7-8 PM at St. Anthony with confessions, and the first Friday of the month from 10:30-11:30 AM at St. Margaret-St. John.
7 the last page 7 Please note that the only Mass in the region on July 4 will be at St. Cecilia at 9 AM. A great way to start your holiday! Scripture Seminars St. Jerome said, Ignorance of scripture is ignorance of Christ. These seminars are ideal for home schoolers and theology-focused college students. All are welcome and will surely grow in faith from the experience. Since 1975, the LPMP has equipped ordinary Catholics to accomplish extraordinary things in the name of Christ. Weeknight and Saturday classes fit into busy adult schedules, allowing participants to maintain job, family and community commitments while answering a call to deeper discipleship. Classes count toward catechist certification and serve as a prerequisite for application to the permanent diaconate formation. Interviews are now underway for fall classes at the main campus and Good Shepherd in Montgomery. We are offering a 25% lay tuition discount this year. Call for information or to set up an interview. Freedom is one of the most ambiguous words in the religious lexicon. It can mean simply the capacity to choose this or that, to say yes or no. But in a deeper spiritual sense, it means the power to follow only the right path, to say only yes to what God holds out to us. It is this latter type of liberty that Christ procures for us His followers. - Bishop Robert Barron Please Patronize Our Advertisers To Place An Ad, Call JD-4/2/18 Stay out 3040 Madison Road, Suite 200, Cincinnati, OH Cell: (513) Office: of the (513) Tank! 8 focus on Justice 7 Racism is a sin: a sin that divides the human family, blots out the image of God among specific members of that family, and violates the fundamental human dignity of those called to be children of the same Father. Racism is the sin that says some human beings are inherently superior and others essentially inferior because of races. It is the sin that makes racial characteristics the determining factor for the exercise of human rights. It mocks the words of Jesus: Treat others the way you would have them treat you. Indeed, racism is more than a disregard for the words of Jesus; it is a denial of the truth of the dignity of each human being revealed by the mystery of the Incarnation. [Brothers & Sisters to Us, 1979] Getting Personal About Justice The St. Anthony Peace & Justice Committee is hosting a series of speakers who have experienced injustice and emerged to tell the story. All of the sessions begin at 7 PM in the Lighthouse School. July 10 Betty Daniel Rosemond, a poet, inspirational speaker and American Hero who loves the Lord, was an active member of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) from 1960 to 1963 in New Orleans. She participated in boycotts, sit-ins and pickets in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. She was among those who would ride buses throughout the South testing facilities to see if they complied with racial desegregation laws. She will share her story, including meeting Martin Luther King, Jr. All are welcome, so bring your friends to hear her account of this pivotal moment in American history. July 24 Conrad Weiner was born in a small town in Romania in In 1941, authorities in alliance with German forces started a massive campaign of annihilation and deportation of Jews. They traveled by cattle car for two days and one night, and then were forced to walk for two weeks in snow and mud to the forced labor camp, Budi. In 1944 at the age of six, Conrad and the 300 camp survivors were liberated by the advancing Soviet Army and repatriated to Romania. In 1960 he was finally able to settle in America. He settled in Cincinnati and holds a degree in German and Russian and an MBA. August 7 Immigrant speakers from IJPC (Intercommunity Justice & Peace Center) will relate their stories of coming to the United States as children. The topic of immigration is at the forefront of political debate in our country, and the Youth Educating Society program at IJPC presents the personal stories of young people who put a human face on a complex issue. This holiness to which the Lord calls you will grow through small gestures. - Pope Francis, Gaudete et Exsultate, n Weekly Challenges for Spiritual Growth Week 1: Pray with the Sunday Scriptures before Mass Week 2: Perform a corporal work of mercy Week 3: Make a Holy Hour Week 4: invite someone to Mass Week 5: Prayer the Examen Prayer Week 6: Read Gaudete et Exsultate Week 7: Make a new prayer resolution Week 8: Go to confession Week 9: Pray for someone who has wronged you Week 10: Ask for forgiveness from a friend or family member Week 11: Read a document of Vatican II Week 12: Pray the Angelus Week 13: Go to adoration Week 14: Volunteer Week 15: Make an act of charity Week 16: Pray the Rosary
