3 THE CORNER AUG 5-6 The Immaculate Heart of Mary Devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary brings us closer to her son. She was called to be his mother and to share in his redemptive suffering. We are called through this devotion to unite to God through Mary s heart and her sorrows. When we consecrate our hearts to Mary s Immaculate Heart, we give way to our complete devotion to Jesus. Although we are always trying to unite ourselves with Our Lord, Mary acts as our intermediary. We are all suffering in some way or know of someone who is suffering. Sometimes it could be a feeling of loss of control of things, and other times it can be something tragic. When we ask our Mother Mary to pray for us and intercede, we are being humble and we are recognizing her as the holy mother of Our Lord. Last year I read 33 Days to Morning Glory: A Do-It-Yourself Retreat In Preparation for Marian Consecration, by Michael Gaitley. It was a wonderful means to walk my way through a retreat with the saints who had a great devotion to Mary. It is a great way to grow closer to Jesus through his mother. One of the most comforting of prayers is The Memorare. I encourage you to memorize this prayer, as it always helps in times of need. It is one that we pray after every daily Mass. Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen. 3 A GOSPEL REFLECTION by Father Jason Williams MATTHEW 17:1-9 This is my beloved Son with whom I am well-pleased; listen to him. On the mount of the Transfiguration, the disciples are given an undeniable glance into the reality of Jesus as true God and true man. This encounter with the truth of who Jesus is shapes the rest of their life on this earth. The same is true for us: when we encounter Jesus Christ as true God and true man, we are moved by the compassion and love of God to live not in fear but in hope. Christian hope is awareness of being infinitely loved. The life of one who lives from this hope is different, because following Jesus through the Cross to eternal glory becomes the focus and meaning of all that we do. The disciples moment of grace doesn t last forever, though. The glory of Jesus is veiled as quickly as it was unveiled, and the disciples follow the Master down the mountain back into daily Galilean life. However, they follow him changed by this encounter with the truth of who Jesus is: fully human, fully divine, teacher, Savior, Lord, and God. He is the one worth following at any cost, setting all else aside. We have a momentary encounter with the Lord in his truth at every Mass, but that experience of the glory of the Lord doesn t last forever. As we leave the church we to come down off the mountain, changed by the experience of not only seeing but also receiving the one Lord who is both our God and our brother. What an opportune time we have today to examine how this experience changes us! Do I follow Jesus, my Lord and my God, unreservedly, with the confidence of a disciple whose heart has been inflamed by divine Love?

4 S CATECHESIS 4 Our Lady of Fatima and Her Three Secrets Our Lady of Fatima is a Roman Catholic title of the Blessed Virgin Mary based on the famed Marian apparitions reported in 1917 by three shepherd children at the Cova da Iria, in Fatima, Portugal. The three children were Lucia Santos and her cousins Jacinta and Francisco Marto. Bishop Jose da Silva declared the miracle worthy of belief on October 13, 1930, officially permitting it the cult of devotion within the Catholic Church. On May 13, 2017, the 100 th Anniversary of the First Marian Apparition of Fatima, Pope Francis was in Fatima to canonize Sts. Jacinta and Francisco Marto. The three children whom Our Lady of the Rosary appeared to on May 13, 1917, were instructed by Our lady to continue saying the Rosary every day in her honor to obtain world peace and the end of World War I. Our Lady appeared to these children on the 13 th of the month until the final appearance on October 13, 1917, when 70,000 people witnessed the Miracle of the Sun when the sun spun in spectacular colors and appeared to come down out of the sky as if it were to almost hit the earth and then returned to its natural place in the cosmos. QUOTE OF THE WEEK Meet the Saints St. Louis Marie de Monfort ( ) Louis s life is inseparable from his efforts to promote genuine devotion to Mary, the mother of Jesus and mother of the Church. Totus tuus (completely yours) was Louis s personal motto; Pope St. John Paul II chose it as his Episcopal motto. Louis was ordained a diocesan priest in In his preaching, which attracted thousands of people back to the faith, Fr. Louis recommended frequent, even daily, Holy Communion (not the custom then!) and imitation of the Virgin Mary s ongoing acceptance of God s will for her life. He founded the Missionaries of the Company of Mary (for priests and brothers) and the Daughters of Wisdom, who cared especially for the sick. He is known for his particular devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and the practice of praying the Rosary. His most notable works regarding Marian Devotion are contained in The Secret of Mary and The True Devotion to Mary. If you carry your cross joyfully, it will carry you. Thomas à Kempis

5 PASTOR S RAMBLINGS AUG 5-6 MARY S GARDEN: I am so grateful that so many volunteers came together to help continue selling Mary Snider s plants at our flea market. Sadly, Mary had to miss this year s festival due to an illness, but she had her plants ready to go, and wonderful volunteers came to bat for her (photo, top left). Let s keep praying for her healing. She was so grateful for all of the help. 1 CODY S NEW HOUSE: Our director of religious education, Cody Egner, and his wife, Angela, have bought their first house (photo, top right). Congratulations! The best part is that they moved to the west side. Since I was raised on the west side, I have a great appreciation for that area. I m excited for the new little family and their new home! 1 NEW GRANDMOTHER: Marta Misleh, the pastor s assistant here at St. Cecilia, is a new grandmother. Larry and Marta are longtime parishioners. Their son Nico and his wife, Cherrell, were married at St. Cecilia last year. They became parishioners and now have their first baby. After five sons, Larry and Marta were ready for a little girl (photo, left) to join the Misleh family. 1 REST IN PEACE: Michael Thomas Keller passed away July 16 at the age of 63. His Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated July 22 here at St. Cecilia. He is the beloved brother of parishioner Joe Keller. Longtime parishioner Marian Downing (photo, left) was a regular attendee of our 4:00 Mass. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated for her on July 21. She was 87 years old. One of her last blessings was that she was able to hold her newest great granddaughter the Sunday before she passed away. 1 WELCOME, CHILDREN OF GOD. Welcome to the newly baptized Maximilian Anthony and Christopher William Silvestri, twin sons of Daniel and Elizabeth Silvestri (photo, left). 1 CON- GRATULATIONS! On July 29, Elliott Johnson and Meg Franklin celebrated the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony, with Fr. Jamie presiding. We wish them a blessed life together! 5 PRAYER REQUEST For the special intention of St. Cecilia Parish & Taylor Avenue residents that God s will be done regarding the development of the 5/3 Bank site property.

However, despite the couples best efforts, unfortunately a marriage union sometimes fails to reach fulfillment for both parties and may end in a civil divorce. The Catholic Church has mechanisms and processes in place to assist people in these situations, especially if they anticipate another marriage. If you find yourself in this circumstance, we would like to help. To learn more about how to get assistance, please contact Joe Fondacaro in our pastoral region at , ext. 222, or at jfondacaro@eastsideregion.org. All inquiries are kept in strict confidence. Forty Hours Devotion Everyone is invited to our annual parish Forty Hours Devotion. The opening ceremony will be at a 1:30 PM Mass on Friday, September 8, followed by continuous adoration until the closing ceremony on Sunday, September 10, at the 10 AM Mass. A brunch will follow. This is a wonderful opportunity to prayerfully visit with the Lord in exposition while in the peace and solitude of our beautiful, inspiring church. Since we must have someone present with the Lord for every hour during this event, if you are able to commit to even half an hour, please sign-up on the sheets located on the pillars near the side entrances. If you have any questions about sign-ups, you can contact Jeff Icsman at or icsmanj@gmail.com.
