3 APRIL 22-23, 2017 THE PASTOR S CORNER Divine Mercy Sunday In 1931, the memories of World War I were still very much alive in the minds of Europeans when, in Poland, Sr. Faustina Kowalska is said to have been personally visited by Jesus. According to her diary, an image was revealed to her of the risen Lord, from whose heart shone two rays, one red (representing blood) and the other pale (symbolizing water), with the words Jesus, I trust in you at the bottom. Faustina wrote in her diary that Jesus told her, I promise that the soul that will venerate this image will not perish. When she was canonized in 2000 under the direction of fellow countryman Pope John Paul II, he proclaimed that the Second Sunday of Easter would henceforth be known as Divine Mercy Sunday, thereby widely promoting the devotional practices associated with Faustina s visions, already popular in many communities. Among the practices associated with the devotion are its novena, the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy (a series of prayers organized similarly to a rosary), the Hour of Great Mercy (a time of prayer traditionally celebrated at 3 PM), and the plenary indulgence granted to those who receive the Eucharist and celebrate reconciliation on Divine Mercy Sunday. The celebration of Divine Mercy Sunday is an opportunity to reflect on the theme of how God s mercy can overcome sin and, as the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments states, a perennial invitation to the Christian world to face, with confidence in divine benevolence, the difficulties and trials that mankind will experience. Here at St. Cecilia, we will offer God s divine mercy by making available the Sacrament of Reconciliation before all daily Masses and weekend Masses. We will also be praying the Divine Mercy Chaplet right after the 10:00 Mass on Divine Mercy Sunday, so please stay and join us for this beautiful devotion. Amen? Amen! A GOSPEL REFLECTION JOHN 20: by FATHER JASON WILLIAMS Peace be with you. When he first sees the Twelve after his Resurrection, Jesus is insistent in his message. In fact, the Gospel records him saying, Peace be with you, no less than three times during these initial encounters. Those are powerful words. Today Jesus the Incarnate Word of God speaks the same words to each of us. Jesus Resurrection is our source of true peace. It is the sign of God s definitive victory over sin and the triumph of life over death. That s why Jesus ties together in this passage his outpouring of peace and his command to forgive sins. All that God worked out through the Paschal mystery of Jesus opens the way for each of us to be restored to life with him. Living in union with God is living a life that is truly peaceful, because his grace is the firm foundation, not our own efforts. On this Divine Mercy Sunday we implore God in his goodness to have mercy on us and on the whole world. We seek this peace that only God can provide for ourselves and for those around us those who believe and those who don t. Our reflection on all that God has done for us ought to lead us towards a stronger desire to not only receive God s mercy, but also to be merciful to others. 4 SAINT CECILIA ROMAN CATHOLIC PARISH CATECHESIS Divine Mercy Sunday Why did Pope John Paul begin celebrating this feast? It was revealed in the 1930 s by our Lord to Saint Faustina that He would pour out His Mercy in great abundance before His second coming as the Just Judge. Saint Faustina was to spread the word of His mercy and to seek to have the Feast of Mercy celebrated. This papal act represents the highest endorsement that the Church can give to a private revelation, an act of papal infallibility proclaiming the certain sanctity of the mystic, and the granting of a universal feast, as request by Our Lord to St. Faustina. A Day of Mercy and Pardon: Celebrating and naming the Octave Day of Easter (Second Sunday of Easter) Divine Mercy Sunday recovers an ancient tradition that is reflected in a teaching attributed to St. Augustine about the Easter Octave, which he called the days of mercy and pardon. Liturgically, the prayers and readings for this Sunday have always been centered on the theme of Divine mercy and forgiveness. This final day of the octave of Easter points us to the merciful love of God that lies behind the whole Paschal Mystery the whole mystery of the death, burial and resurrection of Christ made present for us in the Eucharist. Why should we, as God s people, care? Jesus revealed to Saint Faustina that whoever approaches the Fountain of Life seeking His Mercy on this day will be granted complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. (excerpt from St. Faustina Diary entry #300) In other words, all our sins will be wiped away, including the time needed for restitution of our sins in purgatory. Saint Faustina recorded these words revealed to her by Jesus, The Feast of Mercy emerged from My very depths of tenderness. It is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy. (St. Faustina Diary entry #99) Reflections with the Saints: St. Sava ( ) If St. Sava, the patron saint of Serbia, were to write out his résumé, it might look something like this: Established numerous monasteries, including one at Khilandari. Restored religious vigor to people of Serbia. Translated books into Serbian language. Crowned brother, Stephen II, as king. Was named archbishop of the Serbs. Not a bad list of accomplishments, but even more than his deeds, St. Sava is remembered for his gentleness. It is said that when he trained young monks, he erred more on the side of leniency than harshness, yet he was equally well known for his effectiveness. When we try to correct our own bad habits, we can become harsh taskmasters, browbeating and berating ourselves for our failings. For instance, a single missed day of exercise can become a capital offense. How could I be so lazy? We moan and complain about having no self-discipline. The next time you set out on a self-improvement program, follow the example of St. Sava and his monks. Be gentle with yourself. Instead of criticizing every failure, congratulate every success. Instead of being harsh and demanding, be lenient and forgiving. Instead of hating your inadequacy, love yourself into improvement. 5 APRIL 22-23, 2017 PASTO R S RAMBLIN GS reward! 1 50TH ANNIVERSARY: Parishioners Tim and Bonnie Cahill (photos, above) celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the 4:00 Mass on April 8 which was also their actual wedding date in Congratulations to the Cahills! 1 LEWIS FAMILY GOES TO ROME AND SORRENTO: Owen Lewis, one of our alumni and parishioners, now attends Purcell Marian High School. Instead of taking spring break, he traveled to Rome with a group from his high school PRAYING THE STEPS: Fr. Jason led the Rosary while we prayed the steps at Holy Cross-Immaculata Church on Palm Sunday afternoon (photo, top). We had a nice group and were glad Fr. Jason s parents were able to join us. 1 SPAGHETTI DINNER: After we prayed the steps, we went down to Sacred Heart Church for the annual ravioli dinner. Most of the group that prayed the steps went to the dinner ready for good food and wine! It was fun to see one of our students, Elizabeth Herzner (photo, above), so excited about getting her spaghetti and meatballs after having prayed the steps. What a fun and his family (photo, above). It is considered an intersession to take a trip to one of the chosen places for Purcell Marian students. I m so glad that Owen was able to experience such a wonderful and historical trip. 1 MATH AWARD: Of the three schools using the Blended Learning model, St. Cecilia was given the Math Achievement Award for the achievement of academic progress in math. 6 SAINT CECILIA ROMAN CATHOLIC PARISH PARISH N EWS & NOTES Easter Egg Hunt On Sunday, May 7, after the 10 AM Mass, our Moms Group will be hosting an Easter Egg Hunt in the yard next to church for children in the parish ages 6 and younger. This event is meant to remind us that Easter doesn t end on Easter Sunday and that egg hunts and celebrations continue for 50 days, all the way through Pentecost. This is a BYOB bring your own basket event! Eastertide Vespers & Choral Concert Solemn Easter Vespers will be held this Sunday, April 23, at 7 PM in the Chapel of Mount St. Mary s Seminary. Easter Vespers (Evening Prayer) includes the singing of hymns, psalms and canticles with choir and brass and will include a performance of Five Mystical Songs by Ralph Vaughan Williams, sung by the Athenaeum Chorale directed by parishioner Mary Catherine Levri. All are invited to attend. Mass for Life On April 29, the fifth Saturday of April, Archbishop Dennis Schurr will celebrate the 8 AM Mass at Holy Name Catholic Church on Auburn Ave near Christ Hospital. The fifth Saturday Masses and prayer vigils for life are sponsored by Life s 5th Quarter. Their goal is to tap into the enthusiasm that our youth demonstrate each January for the March for Life in Washington, DC, and to teach them the power of the best spiritual weapon available to us outside the Eucharist the rosary. Please see for details. Oakley Food Pantry The pantry is always in need of food donations. You can drop off items at any of the St. Cecilia church doors or in the vestibule during the day or on Tuesdays from AM at the pantry at the United Church of Christ at 4100 Taylor Avenue directly across the street from the school. Whatever you can give would be greatly appreciated. Blessing of Runners On Saturday, May 6, the eve of the Flying Pig Marathon, St. Cecilia will have the annual blessing of the runners at the 4 PM Mass. Please tell your friends and family to come and be spiritually strengthened for the race! Live the Faith Ladies Luncheon Come be encouraged in your Catholic faith at the LIVE the FAITH Ladies Luncheon, Wednesday, May 10, at the Kenwood Country Club. Father Jason Williams will present a talk entitled: 21st Century Discipleship: How does following Jesus Christ bear fruit in our lives today? This luncheon is not a fundraiser, but rather an occasion to learn more about the outstanding educational opportunities, speakers and resources available to you through the Athenaeum of Ohio. Our Blessed Mother of Fatima An event honoring the 100 th anniversary of our Blessed Mother s appearance at Fatima, Portugal, will be conducted on Saturday, May 13, at Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Center located at 5440 Moeller Avenue in Norwood from 8:30 AM-4 PM. There is no admission charge for this event although a freewill donation will be gratefully accepted to defray expenses. Spring Men s Cookout Come and join our very first regional Spring Men s Cookout held this year at East Fork State Park (3294 Elklick Rd, Bethel, OH) on Saturday, May 6, from noon-5 PM. All men and their sons are encouraged to come and feast on good food, good company and good fun while taking advantage of all the outdoor amenities the park has to offer. The plan is to simply enjoy some fishing, hiking, a corn hole tournament, or to simply relax in lawn chairs. We ask everyone to pitch in to make this a great day of comradery and fun.
