We come together to share and strengthen our faith in God and each other by celebrating the sacraments and striving to follow God s teaching. We are called to be open to the Holy Spirit and to build a stronger Faith Community by serving the needs of others, by educating, and by welcoming all.

2 St. Raymond of the Mountains Church June 17, 2018 GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE 11th Sunday in Ordinary Time "This is how it is with the kingdom of God." What is a kingdom? Is it the brick and mortar that build up the castle? Is it the expanse of land a king can reasonably defend? Our notions of kingdoms may be romanticized in the modern era, but for the Israelites, a kingdom held deep historical meaning. Thousands of years before the birth of Christ, the Israelites had asked God for a king. After the reigns of David and Solomon, the united kingdom dissolved into factions, and the land was conquered by the Assyrians, Babylonians, and, finally, Romans. For the Israelites, a kingdom was something to build, both structurally and civilly. While this had ended in ruin for their ancestors, many of Jesus' contemporaries longed for the restoration of an earthly kingdom. Jesus' words in today's Gospel are a radical departure from this perspective. He compares the Kingdom of God to a field, but it appears that the farmer has little to do with its progress. "The seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how. Of its own accord, the land yields fruit." Jesus introduces his followers to a new sort of kingdom, a kingdom where God provides the growth. There is work to be done, of course. "When the grain is ripe, he wields the sickle at once, for the harvest has come." But for the Kingdom of God to flourish, there are certain things that are outside of our control. We sow seeds of kindness, justice, and integrity? and then we must be patient. As shoots of faith appear, we nurture the growth with encouragement. As Christians, our task is not to build the Kingdom of God under our power alone, but to trust in the life-giving movement of God. No one s life is free of difficulties, pain and sorrow, but with God s help we are given the strength to endure or be relieved of our burden. In his comic strip, POGO, Walt Kelly stated, We have met the enemy and they are us. When we place our own wants and needs above a trust and faith in God, we become our own worst enemies. Without faith, any suffering and even life itself becomes meaningless. The real test is not the cross itself, but how we respond to these trials. There is no solution in store for the ones who respond with anger, resentment, cursing or despair, but a happy, eternal life with God awaits all who turn to God for help, consolation and endurance. St. Paul writes that with the consolation and encouragement that we receive, we are to encourage and console others with similar afflictions (2 Cor 1: 3~7). Evening Speaking Event at St. Raymond We love family and friends and want to help and support them through various life challenges. And yet, sometimes we are touched personally and simply do not understand the personal nightmares our loved ones or friends face concerning opioids, alcohol and other drugs. St. Raymond Christian Mothers is sponsoring a community presentation on Understanding Addiction and the Effect on Families. The event is at 7 p.m., this Wednesday, June 20 in the Parish Social Hall. Lara Stinebiser, speaker for the event, is a person who has been in long-term recovery from alcoholism and drug addiction. She has worked in human services/social work since 2002 in a variety of positions and is currently a supervisor of Community Prevention Services at Westmoreland Community Action. Through her own challenges with addiction, she is now dedicated in helping others recover. Please mark your calendar and if you have some time, come and listen to hear what Lara has to say. This is community presentation and all are invited to attend. Light refreshments will be available. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults When we are born again in Baptism, we are adopted as God s children and numbered among His saints. We become members of the Church, the Assembly of God s Chosen People, who strive to become holy in imitation of Mary, our Queen Mother, and those other officially recognized (canonized) saints. We are commanded to be holy as God is holy (Lev 20: 8; 1 Pet 1: 15,16), and we have been given the examples of Mary and the saints to imitate. To be holy is to be other, to be different from most human beings who put themselves first with personal comfort and material gratification. Our own examples should demonstrate to others that we are fully Christian, not just in name only. Reading the Bible and the lives of the saints will give us the inspiration to live as true children of God. Coming Soon Make a bid on the Washington Wild Things Basket. BIBLE God is the author of the Bible not because he himself picked up pen and paper and wrote it but because he inspired human authors to write. He also inspired the leaders of his people to determine which Sacred Writings should be included or excluded from the Bible itself. Since the original writings were in Hebrew or Greek, he guides the translators to use appropriate words and phrases of our own language. He then goes further to inspire the readers who earnestly search for truth and understanding of the meaning of Scripture. Since humans, however, are prone to error, God also provides the magisterium of the Church to infallibly determine the truth in any disagreements. Through papal encyclicals and other Church documents he provides guidelines on how to interpret and comprehend what was written.
