St. Raymond of the Mountains Parish Mission Statement We, the parish of St. Raymond of the Mountains (Donegal, PA) are situated in a resort area and comprised of many rural communities. We come together to share and strengthen our faith in God and each other by celebrating the sacraments and striving to follow God s teaching. We are called to be open to the Holy Spirit and to build a stronger Faith Community by serving the needs of others, by educating, and by welcoming all.

2 St. Raymond of the Mountains Church October 21, 2018 GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time "What do you wish me to do for you?" Jesus asks a similar question in different Gospel passages, but the request of James and John is not repeated on any other occasion. "Grant that in your glory we may sit one at your right and the other at your left." They ask not for knowledge of God, not for crooked limbs to be straightened nor for the blind to see. They ask for power and authority. Jesus' response should trouble them. "You do not know what you are asking." "Can you drink the cup that I drink?" Jesus asks. "They said to him, 'We can.'" But what is Christ's cup? Could James and John have possibly known it or understood it here at the height of Jesus' ministry? Jesus' cup is the cup of trial, of difficulty, of public ridicule. His final, thirsting sip occurs as he hangs on the cross. In Christ's kingdom, drinking his cup and participating in his life are not the sharing of power the way we are accustomed. Jesus flips their paradigm. "Whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all." The cup of Jesus is the cup of giving oneself. "The Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many." As Christians, how easy it can be to want the acclaim of good deeds, the gratitude for volunteering, the attention for donating to the church. "It shall not be so among you." If you are overlooked, offer thanks to God for imitating Jesus, rather than bitter complaint at someone else's oversight. Look for opportunities to do good needs unnoticed. This week, consider one way you can drink the cup of Jesus! St. Anne Home Lottery Calendars Lottery calendars benefitting St. Ann Home will be sold at the Church Narthex before and after Mass this weekend, October 20 & 21. The 7 th Annual Verna Montessori School (VMS) Italian Dinner will be held Sunday, November 4 th from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at St. Pius X Social Hall in Mt. Pleasant. If so, please join Rachel Burke on Sunday, October 28 after the 10:30 a.m. Holy Mass to travel to the Pittsburgh Planned Parenthood. We will join with other 40 Days For Life prayer vigil volunteers to pray on the sidewalk near the abortion clinic. This is an excellent opportunity to receive service hours, see if this may be a calling from God to you, and help God do His saving work. We will pray peacefully from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. in Pittsburgh, and return to St Raymond's Church between 4:30-5:00 p.m. Parents and family are invited to join us. Permission Slips required. For more information, contact Rachel Burke at (724) or (760) or at kwburke1@msn.com. NEW EVANGELIZATION We evangelize or proclaim our Catholic Faith in a number of different ways. The first method is our personal witness of life. St. Pope Paul VI said, Modern man listens more willingly to witnesses than to teachers (#40, On Evangelization in the Modern World). Of course, the Gospel message is proclaimed especially in the Liturgy of the Word. An indispensable method is personal contact. In this regard, we should look for opportunities to speak to acquaintances about our faith. Show interest and concern about others needs and problems. Offer assistance and suggest that our Faith has much to offer when coping with worries and anxieties. This approach is much better than making dictatorial pronouncements or ultimatums. Love is not only what we preach but how we preach. BIBLE God can be known only to the extent of our human ability to know and comprehend. Each individual develops their own idea of God who actually exists beyond our comprehension. God reveals Himself through the Bible. He speaks to us when we read the Bible prayerfully and with an open mind. So listen as we read, and the Holy Spirit will inspire us not only in our understanding of God, but in our understanding of ourselves, our relationship to God and His will for us. Read the Bible prayerfully and attentively for understanding, strength, knowledge and spiritual growth. Relate the reading to our own existence or life situation, thanking God and renewing our baptismal commitment. When we read meditatively and attentively we, as did Jesus Himself, advance in wisdom, age and grace before God and humans. Our Bible Discussion Study Group sessions will continue this Thursday, October 25, at 6:30 p.m. in the Parish Social Hall. Come and participate. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults Through Baptism we have been adopted as the children of God, as members of His family. We are God s people, the Church of God. In the Creed we pray that we are the one, holy, catholic and apostolic church. As members of this Church we must communicate speak with and listen to others to overcome our disagreements and animosity to achieve unity. We must work to overcome our own self-indulgence and sinful tendencies to become more God-like. We each must put aside our own smallmindedness and exclusivity to realize that salvation is available to all sinners regardless of age, race, gender or nationality. We must also study the origin and history of the Church to remain in the truth as it was transmitted from Jesus through the apostles. These are not just marks of the Church, but goals toward which we each must work. January Calendar Ticket The entire calendar ticket is valued at $5,000. There is a specific amount of money designated for each day in January. Each ticket holder has the opportunity to win on a given day as little as $115 or as much as $1,000 on January 31, depending on what number is taken from the 7 p.m. drawing of the PA Pick 3 Lottery. Tickets will cost $10 each and only 1,000 tickets will be sold. Please help with this fundraising project. All monies benefit St. Raymond s Church. Thank you for your generosity. World Missions Prayer Lord Jesus Christ, you told your apostles to proclaim the good news and to make followers of all nations. They gave their lives to you, and for you, to spread the Gospel throughout the world. Today, the faithful still strive to bring your name to those who need it most. Give your strength to missionaries around the world who give their lives every day in lands far from home. Help those charged with bringing your word to be an example of you for those who cannot read your word for themselves. Help those who do their work in your name to inspire others to seek you as their Savior. We ask this through you, Christ, our Lord, Savior of the world. Amen.
