We come together to share and strengthen our faith in God and each other by celebrating the sacraments and striving to follow God s teaching. We are called to be open to the Holy Spirit and to build a stronger Faith Community by serving the needs of others, by educating, and by welcoming all.

2 St. Raymond of the Mountains Church May 6, 2018 GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE 6th Sunday of Easter "I have called you friends." Authentic friendship can seem hard to come by these days, especially in our transient society. We move away from family, change jobs, switch parishes, and end up in entirely new places with entirely new people. When we look for new friends, we all have different qualities we're looking for. While we may think of certain standards of behavior necessary to be a "good" friend, we would hardly refer to them as rules or " c o m m a n d m e n t s. " In fact, if a friendship or romantic relationship-new or old -becomes characterized by imposed obligations, we would rightly be suspicious. Friendships, we understand, ought to be characterized by freedom. We love the person, even sacrifice for them at times because, within ourselves, we want to maintain the friendship. So why does Jesus use the language of command as he calls the Apostles his friends? "You are my friends if you do what I c o m m a n d y o u. " Jesus is radically transforming the concept of commandment. In the Jewish heritage of the Apostles, they would hear the word "command" and immediately think of the strict Levitical law and distance from God. In introducing the language of friendship, Jesus ties "commandment" to inner freedom of heart. The disciples have this freedom precisely because they know "what [the] Master is doing." Jesus has invited his followers into intimate friendship all along. He shares openly with them. He has patience with their flaws. He isn't scandalized by their failures. He celebrates their successes. We, too, have been called by love and invited into a relationship with Jesus. It is you and I that Jesus chooses and appoints. He does so personally, not from a distant mountain shrouded in clouds. This "new commandment" to "love one another" is received around the shared table in the breaking of the bread. NEW EVANGELIZATION According to the 2012 statement on New Evangelization, Disciples Called To Witness, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) taught that Transmitting the faith means to create in every place and time the conditions which lead to an encounter between the person and Jesus Christ. Evangelization is a three-fold process through faith, worship and witness. The evangelist should first develop a deeper relationship with Christ, a deeper understanding of and relationship with the Church, and knowledge of the faith. We should then progress to a vibrant communal and sacramental life, especially in the Eucharist and Penance with greater appreciation of family life as the domestic church. Thirdly, we bear witness to our faith by example, by word and by giving recognition to the life and dignity of the human person. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults Faith is not just a matter of knowing what the Church teaches but more important is to put the Faith into practice. The Epistle of St. James states that just as a body without a spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead (James 2: 26). Faith comes alive first of all with prayer. True Christians make themselves aware of God s presence all around them in the sunrise and the sunset, in the events of the day and in each other. They move on to discern the gifts and abilities that they have and put these at the service of those in need; they reflect on their purpose in life and their vocations to the married or consecrated lives. Whether at home, at work, at school we Christians are called to be holy, cultivating unselfish attitudes of love and concern for those we meet and testify by word and example that we have been born again as children of God

We look forward to hearing from you BIBLE Jesus is the incarnate Word of God; the Bible is the written Word of God. It is actually a library of books inspired by God Himself and written by and for God s Chosen People at various times in history in order to reveal divine Truth and Law as the basis for moral living. The Books written before Christ are referred to as the Old Law or the Old Testament and those written after His Incarnation are called the New Law or the New Testament. Since they were written as a guide for God s People, the Magisterium or Teaching Authority of the Catholic Church claims the right and responsibility not only to determine which Sacred Writings are included in the Bible but also to interpret the meaning of the Writings especially when there are apparent conflicts in individual interpretations of passages on matters of Faith and Morals. In short, God wrote the Bible to enlighten us about Himself and the Divine Life, and the Church uses her authority to make sure that we humans understand Him correctly.
