2 St. Raymond of the Mountains Church November 25, 2018 GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe If you brought your child to the restroom during the Liturgy of the Word, you might walk away with one of two interpretations of Jesus as King. The first and second readings are bold and victorious. We see Christ coming on the clouds for the final judgment of heaven and earth. The Gospel sets a very different tone. Jesus is under arrest and facing death before Pontius Pilate. We know how this story will end. So if Christ is King, what does it mean? Is he a glorious conqueror or a suffering servant? "My kingdom does not belong to this world." Here is the heart of Jesus' reign. He is a king -- and his "subjects" are alive and well on earth -- but, ultimately, Jesus' kingdom transcends our earthly concepts of power. Jesus faced down the temptation of a solely earthly kingship. At the close of his 40 days in the desert, the devil offered him the kingdoms of the world. Jesus only had to sacrifice his heavenly values and worship Satan. The same temptations to distort the kingship of Christ are present to us today. Jesus' invitation also endures. "Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice." It is important for us to belong to the full truth of Christ's kingdom. First, our own hearts must be transformed. Our own rebellions in favor of selfishness and against holiness must be conquered by God's grace. Second, we must work to transform the world as best we can in our own corner of it. Like Jesus shows us by his life and death, this doesn't mean domination. It means service, sacrifice, respect, and love. Our lives must "testify to the truth" of Jesus Christ, who lays down his life for his people. That is the true beauty of Christ the King! 3 A Pennsylvania Charitable Trust and A Parish of the Diocese of Greensburg NEW EVANGELIZATION Christian poverty means a detachment from all material goods. Responsible stewardship of my possessions is to discern my level of generosity especially toward those who have less than I have. In The Joy of the Gospel, Evangelii Gaudium, Pope Francis states that although we should be free to spend some of our time and money on personal leisure, Everything we have beyond our needs, rightly belongs to the poor. In the Exhortation he also points out that a benefit of Capitalism is that it promotes inventiveness and ingenuity to be a profitable entrepreneur, but there is a danger that the individual may become susceptible to greed. A successful businessperson is a benefit to society both economically and culturally, but the real benefit is the reward that goes to those who are generous and use their gains to serve the less fortunate. BIBLE When we read the Bible prayerfully God inspires us through His Holy Spirit to understand and apply what we read to our daily lives. However, although the Bible is the unerring word of God, our understanding and personal interpretation can be wrong. The interpreter of sacred Scriptures, if he is to ascertain what God has wished to communicate to us, should carefully search out the meaning which the sacred writers really had in mind. Rightly to understand what the sacred author wanted to affirm in his work, due attention must be paid to the customary patterns of narrative which prevailed at the age of the sacred writer which the people of his time followed in their dealings with one another. Of course, the manner of interpreting Scripture is ultimately subject to the judgment of the Church (#12, Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation, Dei Verbum, Vatican Council II). Celebrating Creation Want to be kind to the earth? Buy a real Christmas tree, if your circumstances allow, rather than an artificial one. Real trees can be recycled as mulch or left to rot and enrich the soil in a forest. Artificial trees are made of plastic, a large problem for the environment. Plastic is not biodegradable. Artificial trees end up in landfills for our children, their children, and their children s children to deal with. Give our children a real gift this Christmas and avoid junking up their world. All creation, bless the Lord! Next week a new year begins with the first Sunday of Advent, which is the season to prepare for God s coming to earth. This is the time we should prepare ourselves to welcome God into our lives in anticipation of the moment when we will meet Him face to face in His heavenly Kingdom. The Church then proceeds to celebrate the events of the birth, life, death and Resurrection of our Redeemer, Jesus. Thus the cycle of the liturgical year and the great feasts constitute the basic rhythm of the Christian s life of prayer with its focal point at Easter (Glossary, Catechism of the Catholic Church). At baptism we were born again as children of God and became citizens of this Kingdom. We must obey His laws and encourage others to do likewise. Make This Advent Preparation for God Becoming One with Us Two DVDs will be playing in the St. Pius X meeting room (224 Summit St, Mt. Pleasant) this Advent: Saint Nicholas: The Real Story will play on Tuesday, December 4, close to St. Nicholas Day. Everyone knows about Santa Claus, who lives at the North Pole and distributes gifts every Christmas. But is there historical evidence for this jolly old character? Take a thrilling journey with historian Mark Wilson, not to the North Pole, but to Turkey and Italy. Here the important story of St. Nicholas, a third-century bishop, emerges from the midst of legend, unveiling a portrait of a kind, courageous leader who stood for truth at a critical time in Church history. The Story of the Nativity will play on Tuesday, December 11. This DVD is an in-depth documentary that provides a fascinating account of the real Christmas story. Drawing on the insights of biblical scholars and historians, The Story of the Nativity looks at the traditions of Jesus origins, with biblical scholars Jesuit Fr. Mitch Pacwa, Dr. Timothy Gray, and Dr. Ed Sri, and popular authors Peter Kreeft, Johnette Benkovic, Roy Schoeman, Steven Ray, and others. Each DVD plays for 1 hour. Showing starts at 6:20 p.m. All are welcome; bring a friend!
