3 ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME GOSPEL MEDITATION 11TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY Time "This is how it is with the kingdom of God." What is a kingdom? Is it the brick and mortar that build up the castle? Is it the expanse of land a king can reasonably defend? Our notions of kingdoms may be romanticized in the modern era, but for the Israelites, a kingdom held deep historical meaning. Thousands of years before the birth of Christ, the Israelites had asked God for a king. After the reigns of David and Solomon, the united kingdom dissolved into factions, and the land was conquered by the Assyrians, Babylonians, and, finally, Romans. For the Israelites, a kingdom was something to build, both structurally and civilly. While this had ended in ruin for their ancestors, many of Jesus' contemporaries longed for the restoration of an earthly kingdom. Jesus' words in today's Gospel are a radical departure from this perspective. He compares the Kingdom of God to a field, but it appears that the farmer has little to do with its progress. "The seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how. Of its own accord, the land yields fruit." Jesus introduces his followers to a new sort of kingdom, a kingdom where God provides the growth. There is work to be done, of course. "When the grain is ripe, he wields the sickle at once, for the harvest has come." But for the Kingdom of God to flourish, there are certain things that are outside of our control. We sow seeds of kindness, justice, and integrity? and then we must be patient. As shoots of faith appear, we nurture the growth with encouragement. As Christians, our task is not to build the Kingdom of God under our power alone, but to trust in the life-giving movement of God. ADORATION & BENEDICTION Join us each Monday through June 25th after which Adoration will end for the summer months. Someone once said to St. Teresa of Avila, If only I had lived at the time of Jesus... If only I had seen Jesus... If only I had talked with Jesus. Teresa responded, But do we not have in the Eucharist the living, true and real Jesus present before us? Why look for more? Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen believed that his daily hour of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament was essential for his ministry as a priest. The Holy Hour became like an oxygen tank to revive the breath of the Holy Spirit Archbishop Sheen constantly promoted meditative prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. We become like that which we gaze upon. Looking into a sunset, the face takes on a golden glow. Looking at our Eucharistic Lord for an hour transforms the heart in a mysterious way (Sheen, 198). The tournament will have a Scramble format with hole in one, closest to the pin and longest drive contest prizes. The $150 fee per golfer includes a 7:00 a.m. breakfast, beer on the course and an awards banquet following play. Proceeds benefit the Mount Carmel School sports programs. MISSIONARY VISIT NEXT WEEKEND- The Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette minister to people of every race, language, culture and way of life beginning at the La Salette Shrine in France where our Blessed Mother appeared in Her final words, Well, my children, you will make this known to all my people, echo Jesus Gospel Mandate. It is little wonder that the LaSalette Congregation has always been mission-orientated. When called upon by the Vatican to preach the Gospel in foreign lands, they eagerly responded. This spirit brought them to mission in 27 countries, especially among the poor in Angola, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Haiti and many other places. And, most recently, Mozambique. With your cooperation, the Missionaries of La Salette can continue to provide spiritual and financial assistance to these mission countries as they bring God s reconciling message to the poor. Respect Life Legal abortion is considered a political issue by many people, while others look at it as the great moral issue of our time. One thing is certain. It is a divisive issue. It separates people into two opposing groups, one that believes in the sanctity and dignity of human life from the moment of conception to the time of natural death, and another that does not. There is no neutral ground when it comes to abortion. We are pro-life or we are not. We are defenders of life and protectors of the unborn child...or we are not.
