St. Raymond of the Mountains Church July29, 2018 GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time Have you ever wanted to be part of something bigger?

In this Sunday's Gospel reading, Jesus demonstrates one of his most iconic miracles - the multiplication of the loaves.

In the stories of ancient pagan gods, mighty deeds were done entirely under the gods' own power.

The multiplication of the loaves is a prime example not only of Jesus' power over nature, but of the way he equips his disciples. First, Jesus asks Philip a question "to test him.

Andrew offers a suggestion, though he isn't confident in it. "There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what good are these for so many?

" In the process, they discover with wonder that bread has been produced in super abundance. In the sacraments, God works through simple matter to make grace real in our lives.

Even the most independent among us likes to make changes and have an impact on others. In this Sunday's Gospel reading, Jesus demonstrates one of his most iconic miracles - the multiplication of the loaves. It is a sign of the institution of the Eucharist, when we are fed not by bread but by the Body of Christ. In the stories of ancient pagan gods, mighty deeds were done entirely under the gods' own power. Mortals may have offered sacrifices to start the chain of events, but they played little role in the miraculous works themselves. Jesus is entirely different. The multiplication of the loaves is a prime example not only of Jesus' power over nature, but of the way he equips his disciples. First, Jesus asks Philip a question "to test him." Jesus has seen the crowds and "he himself knew what he was going to do," but he wants his disciples to start thinking about the problem and its solution. We need parishioners to contribute a cake or pie for all our dinners. Once again we are asking for your help. Please have the desserts to the kitchen by 9 a.m., Sunday, August 12. The Catholic Religion is unique in its profession of Faith (dogmas, doctrines) and in its laws of Morality determined by the Magisterium: its infallible guidance on all matters of Faith and Morals. Catholics are also unique in our personal relationships and devotions to Jesus and His Mother, Mary. Perhaps most of all, we are unique in our Sacred Liturgy. In no other religion or denomination does God come as close to His People as He does to us in the Sacraments, especially in the Holy Communion of His Body and Blood. As we develop our own spirituality, we reflect on and attempt to imitate Jesus, Mary and the Saints, especially their virtues of humility, obedience and service to others. Catholicism has much to offer as we go through life carrying our own crosses. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults Faith is more than just getting baptized, and then doing as we please. Baptism is a commitment both on the part of God and on the part of the baptized: God gives each new-born an eternal life, forgives his/her sins and adopts the individual as His child; our part is to live as members of His holy family. Some go through the ceremony but soon return to their own former ways. By our words and actions do we give honor and praise to God and respect to the name Christian, or do we bring disgrace to the members of His family? Unless we make the effort to grow and improve our relationship with God and each other, we commit a type of spiritual suicide and bring upon ourselves an eternal death and damnation. As children of the Father we must force ourselves to become more like Jesus by denying our own selfish desires and obeying the Commandments.

BIBLE The Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Inspiration ( Dei Verbum ) of the Second Vatican Council states explicitly the value of Sacred Scripture in the lives of the Catholic faithful. The Church receives and offers to the faithful the bread of life from both Scripture and the Eucharist (#21). The Church encourages study of the Scriptures and also of the early Fathers to enlighten the minds of the faithful, strengthen their wills, and set men s hearts on fire with the love of God (#23). The study of Scripture should be the basis of... all Christian instruction (#24). This treasure of revelation should fill the hearts of men and stimulate the life of the Spirit just as the life of the Church is strengthened through frequent celebration of the Eucharistic mystery (#26).
