We are called to be open to the Holy Spirit and to build a stronger Faith Community by serving the needs of others, by educating, and by welcoming all.

2 St. Raymond of the Mountains Church December 30, 2018 GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE December 30, 2018 The Holy Family "After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions, and all who heard him were astounded at his understanding and his answers." As we celebrate the feast of the Holy Family, this Gospel exposes us to a strange tension. While this family is one we can look to for an example, they are not quite the same family unit as everyone else. There is an otherness to Jesus, something profound. And yet, perhaps on second thought, are our families so different? When Mary and Joseph encountered Jesus in the temple, "they were astonished." But at what? Mary's response is surprised. They're not astonished that Jesus is preaching in a place for respected teachers. They're not astonished that their son has captured the attention of the wisest men of the time period. They're astonished at his seemingly disobedient behavior! "Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety." All our children have an "otherness" about them, something that makes them unique and different. They are distinctly not "me." What will our own children become? What temple will they wander off to? 3 A Pennsylvania Charitable Trust and A Parish of the Diocese of Greensburg NEW EVANGELIZATION Merry Christmas! Happy New Year! The Lord is with us! Jesus has been born again not only in the town of Bethlehem or in the mangers of our nativity scenes, but in our minds and hearts. The new evangelization requires us to evangelize not so much other people, but to increase the ardor and fervor within ourselves. Do not look for sin in others and blame them; look at our own attitudes toward those who have less than we do and help them. Before forcing them to drink the water that we pour on them by admonishing them with our own self-righteous convictions, look within our own minds and hearts and correct the less-than-generous attitudes that we have toward those who disagree with us. Do not be so quick to condemn the abortionist or the terrorist; first, get rid of that same attitude within ourselves that tendency to eliminate or destroy anyone or anything that gives us a problem or gets in our way. Make a new resolution to listen, be understanding and help others carry their crosses before condemning them for the actions they take to eliminate their own problems and frustrations. Love does not condemn, but rather shows concern to offer an alternative to violence and hatred as a solution to their seemingly insurmountable problem and frustration. This year, make a new resolution to give Love a home in our hearts. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults According to St. Pope Leo the Great, who prevented Attila the Hun from massacring the inhabitants of Rome in 455AD and vigorously opposed the Arian heresy, advancing the dogma that Mary is the Mother of God, also taught that the Incarnation of the Son of God was necessary for redemption: Wisdom built her house in the spotless womb of the Virgin Mary before she was overshadowed by the Holy Spirit. The Creator of time was born in time.... Without the Incarnation this whole human race would still be held under the dominion of Satan. The Son of God was born in human form so that we too might be born again in a spiritual birth,... born not of blood, nor of the desire of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God (Ep 31, 2~3, PL 54, 791~3). ChristLife sessions at St. Vincent St. Vincent Basilica Parish will host Discovering Christ, a seven-week series in the ChristLife program that begins Jan. 29 and includes a retreat on March 3. The sessions, held in the parish center, include a free meal, teaching and small-group discussions. To learn more about the course, watch the video at Celebrating Creation Joy to the world, the Lord is come! In Ps 98:4-9a, the psalmist sings his own Joy to the World Shout with joy to the LORD, all the earth; break into song; sing praise. Sing praise to the LORD with the lyre, with the lyre and melodious song. With trumpets and the sound of the horn shout with joy to the King, the LORD. Let the sea and what fills it resound, the world and those who dwell there. Let the rivers clap their hands, the mountains shout with them for joy, Before the LORD who comes! All creation sings for joy. Let us join in creation s song of joy! Let us value the singer, as well as the song. BIBLE When reading the Bible, it should be noticed that in the Old Testament God seems to be more severe in punishing people with little regard for life, while in the New Testament He is more loving and forgiving. In effect, however, God is merely dealing with His people according to the contemporary culture. God does not change; the times change. Before Jesus, those who broke the Law of the Ten Commandments were mercilessly punished by the law as was the custom. After Jesus, God judges us sinners with justice tempered with mercy according to the law of Love, and He forgives those of us who repent. In a similar fashion we should read and interpret Sacred Scripture with an awareness of the culture in which the sacred authors lived and spoke. As St. Paul insists, the law of an eye for an eye has been replaced by the law of love and forgiveness for those of us who worship God by showing love and forgiveness even toward those who offend us.

Church Tours Holy Family Church, Latrobe Holy Family Parish, Latrobe is offering guided tours of their church from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 5 the Church will be decorated for the Christmas Season. Reservations are not required, but please arrive by 1:00. Each tour is approximately 45 minutes. The next scheduled tour will take place during the Easter Season. The date will be announced.
